i think my issue with doomsday outside of the obvious slopfest is that it just has no love or soul for any of the characters in it. it's purely a collabfest of how many familiar faces can we chuck on a screen with some semblance of a poorly-written 1st draft script that's trying to imitate the same level that infinity war and endgame achieved while being completely unable to do so

like if you take away all of that and look at it as purely a continuation of the films then it still falls flat and dull because none of the same care and love is given to the characters that was there in the previous films. they completely tore up steve's ending, made tony into some new heartbreak reminiscent thing without including any of his characters outside of thor and steve, and they've butchered thor's whole thing trying to reclaim some love for him after the mess that was love and thunder

there's just nothing in it that feels human or like it sees the characters as actual characters people love instead of just cameo money-makers. i know the mcu isn't always a complete reflection of the comics and takes creative liberties - that are sometimes good and bad - but you can look at it as its own universe/canon, and this movie just feels so deeply offensive to the mcu and what's been built within in it.

idk, ever since the movie was announced to be the mcu's next big 'event' and the whole rdj=doom thing, i've just been upset and annoyed by it all. i hope this is one and done thing and then marvel will focus more on the indiviudal stories that have done so well outside of it like the new spider-man coming out, thunderbolts, fantastic four, that stuff. the stuff that feels like it actually has respect for the characters and genuine passion put into the movie and story itself but ://

the Entire Point of the batman mythos to me is making something meaningful out of a random and pretty senseless act of violence, and then helping a bunch of other people do that too. every time a writer makes joe chill a time traveler or dick grayson have a magical tooth or gives jason todd the blood of the ancients and everything is just a massive conspiracy or whatever the fuck they're just completely missing the point, which is that painful things happen, for reasons we may never understand, and we have to contend with them.

that's the staying power of the fantasy! it's not actually being a billionaire who can beat up a million ninjas with his bare hands and has a really cool car. if you think that's the fantasy you got caught up in the trappings. it's that you could take the worst moment of your life and make meaning out of the howling empty void of grief by using it to help people!

already kicking the hornet’s nest by criticizing Tolkien today so I may as well praise Steven Universe lmao. I listened to a few of the better songs last night and man that show really grappled with a level of interpersonal emotional complexity that even adult shows rarely handle. at the time all valid criticisms of the show really got lost in the deluge of arguments that boiled down to “it’s bad to depict toxic dynamics between humanized characters who care about each other” which lol.

obviously it was groundbreaking for depicting lesbian relationships and genderfluid characters but it was really quite a nuanced depiction of like. the parentified child forced to bear the burden of emotional intelligence because no one else will or can. Rose as a benevolent antagonist who’s avoidant and inconsiderate to the point of profound cruelty and the frustration of not really being able to have the catharsis of properly hating your mother. everthing going on with pearl lmao. genuinely a very ambitious exploration of what it means to hurt and be hurt by the people you love and the kind of toxic baggage literally everyone carries into their relationships without intending to. didn’t always hit the mark of course but imho it was usually a smarter show than tumblr gives it credit for.
