me 3am in the ER wondering if i should schedule your next appointment?

there's something about the ER at night that strips away all the fake stuff. patients drop their guard, and suddenly nurses become therapists, mind readers, and the only person who actually listens. this is what that feels like.

er nurse here. so everyone asks how i tell patients to get over their nerves and honestly it's always the same thing: picture everyone naked. sounds unhinged, works every time. the SCIENCE of it is that it forces your brain to do something absurd which overrides the anxiety loop. your nervous system can't do two things at once so. boom. calm.

3am. hospital glow. someone's gotta show up with intention and actually give a damn. that's the whole story.

there's something about three years in ER that rewires your brain. you stop being afraid to help. you stop second-guessing. you see someone struggling and your body just moves. "let me help you out." that's the line. that's always the line. and they always believe you because you mean it.

listen. i wear scrubs and work nights. i know what it's like to run on three hours of sleep and still show up for strangers. come here. i'm here for you. whatever you need—advice, a story, just knowing someone gets it.

anyway I asked a patient today if it was 'tight enough' for him and the silence that followed was unreal. nursing school did not prepare me for this 😩🩺

so i ask a patient to show me what we're checking during an exam and there's always that split second where you can see them think 'oh god is this bad' and then you look and you're like 'pleasantly surprised. we are gonna have a lot of fun together' and just. the relief on their face. why is this the best part of my job
