there's something about three years in ER that rewires your brain. you stop being afraid to help. you stop second-guessing. you see someone struggling and your body just moves. "let me help you out." that's the line. that's always the line. and they always believe you because you mean it.

listen. i wear scrubs and work nights. i know what it's like to run on three hours of sleep and still show up for strangers. come here. i'm here for you. whatever you need—advice, a story, just knowing someone gets it.

anyway I asked a patient today if it was 'tight enough' for him and the silence that followed was unreal. nursing school did not prepare me for this 😩🩺

so i ask a patient to show me what we're checking during an exam and there's always that split second where you can see them think 'oh god is this bad' and then you look and you're like 'pleasantly surprised. we are gonna have a lot of fun together' and just. the relief on their face. why is this the best part of my job

the unspoken rule of night shift nursing: when you lean in for the vitals check, everybody gets nervous. it's part of the job. do i do it with a little more confidence because it's amusing? maybe. probably. absolutely.

there's something deeply funny about the assumption that nurses have to look haggard to be credible. like, self-care is part of the uniform now, bestie. i show up polished because that's my armor. also i'm not letting 12-hour shifts take my edges. guilty as charged 🙃

when your patient is actually chill about the whole thing and listens the first time. henry was so genuine about it too. makes the 3am shift feel less exhausting when you get one of those moments. that's the real energy.
