ARCA Atelier Marko Brajovic

ARCA was named by the locals as it came as a ship in the middle of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. If fact, on a more anecdotic level, it’s an earthship project, that comes from a wish to mimic a specific Brazilian indigenous house typology (Asurini, Médio Xingu) and be a stand alone object with minimal impact to the surrounding.

This curved connector hallway joined the two sandstone wards at the H. H. Richardson-designed Buffalo State Hospital, probably the most architecturally rich asylum in America.  The curvature was a brilliant forethought - decades after the asylum was built, it was overcrowded, but it was impossible to fill this hallway, which acted as a fire barrier, with patient beds.

Grand staircase in the Administration area of the Kirkbride building at Hudson River State Hospital during nautical twilight, with nearly-full-moon light shining in through the window.  With civil twilight over before I could get this shot perfectly composed, I decided to guess on a 15 minute exposure for the final shot of the day, with the blue-hour light mixing with the moonlight - and this is what came out.  This 1867 Frederick Clarke Withers building is mostly in horrible shape, but this particular section has held up rather well in the past 147 years.
