A/N: I was certain I wanted to do a historical AU for the Makorra Winter Project, but I wasn’t sure which period I wanted the setting to be. Lo and behold, I found inspiration on tumblr, and after watching Gladiator and a little of Spartacus I had some semblance of a story. Download links for the full ebook can be found here!

I.

Her old cell had been two paces across and four paces in length. It was a small space, but it was not meant to be anything else. There was a twisted honesty to it, the reality of her enslavement plastered onto every inch of its dank clay walls.

Now Korra stands a courtyard bathed by the Campania sun, with gusts of sweet summer wind threading through her short hair like whispers of good fortune, but she is not fooled. Prominent colonnades, reminiscent of the grand consulate in Rome where she spent countless days and nights, emphasize the sole entrance and exit to the massive three-story compound. High arching windows open to the free air only on the topmost floor, from which a fall - or more accurately, a jump - would guarantee a crippling injury. For all of the elements of open design, the ludus is very much still a prison, and its purpose is simple: to break its inhabitants - slaves, prisoners of war, criminals, men who had no other shots at glory - into the best gladiators the Republic has ever seen.

We the mods are so, so proud to finally announce the publishing of the Makorra Winter Project! Not only has putting this ebook together been an amazing journey, but also it is a testament to the talent and passion of all who contributed to this work and to the Makorra community as a whole. We are honored to be able to share this book with all of you, and we hope you enjoy!

With the new year comes the announcement of our genres for the Makorra Winter Project! Due to interest, we’ve expanded our choices to six genres, which are the following: MODERN, FANTASY, HISTORICAL, DYSTOPIAN OR APOCALYPTIC, CRIME, and ROMANCE. 

If you’ve already signed up, please let us know what genre(s) you’re interested in! If you’d like to sign up, send us an ask and, again, specify which genre(s) you’re interested in. Note that picking a genre is not a binding act; we just want a headcount to see the approximate makeup of the e-book.

Hey everyone! We’ve received several asks about the rules for this project and just wanted to lay them out in a post so everything is clear (and also easier for people on mobile to access.) A lot of what we have is very similar to what was enforced in the Summer Project, so if you previously participated in that then things should be familiar. Here’s the play the play for the MWP!

Important dates:

Jan 1st - Genres announced, entry submissions begin

March 31st - Submission deadline

April 15th - Final revisions

April 23rd - Publication date

Celebrate Makorra with us!

We accept any kind of fan medium! Fanart, fanfic, playlists, videos, etc. If you have any questions about your idea, please ask!

The MWP will contain AUs only. In keeping with the spirit of the Makorra Summer Project, we want to celebrate and explore their relationship through any universe and timeline. Playing with canon is acceptable (exception: no rewriting the B4 ending) but in general we advise for you to try and avoid canon and play in a different sandbox.

You can submit as many pieces for as many genres as you’d like! Just please be sure to label which piece(s) are for which genre(s).

There is no length limit for fanfiction! However, please try to only submit completed stories, i.e. one shots.

Just like the MSP, this e-book will be free and available for download.

When you’re done, you can submit your work via tumblr or email your work to us at [email protected]. Also, please do not post your work online until the ebook is published. We’d like to keep all the content a surprise for when the e-book is published, after which feel free to post content on your own blogs! At this time any posts with #makorra winter project in the first five tags will be reblogged here.

Please note: any submissions that attempt to rewrite the show’s ending will not be published.
