This is the fruit that we decided to use, but you can use any fruit you like! You can even replace the watermelon with rockmelon or honeydew! Keep in mind that we are putting some of this fruit on using skewers (we didn’t have toothpicks, use toothpicks if you can) so you want a bit of meat on the fruit so it won’t just slippedy slide right off the watermelon.

Cut the watermelon (what did I say about knife safety?) and delegate a small child to eat the cut-offs. We are doing a 2-tier (2 level) “cake”, so I cut the watermelon, making sure to have two nice big pieces to round off into wide cylinders. You can make a square cake if you didn’t want a round one.

Here I am cutting and shaping the second tier for the cake, with the first one already done. Make sure to make it smaller than the first in width, so that you have a sort-of shelf to stick fruit on. Sage is chopping up the rest of the fruit we need to decorate. You can make it interesting by cutting out the fruit using cutters, like stars or hearts.

With the top tier ready to go on the bottom tier, put 3-4 skewers into the bottom tier near the middle. This will support the “cake” and make sure that the top tier doesn’t just slide off.

Start putting your fruit on. Use toothpicks or cut-up skewers and put them wherever you think looks good! We didn’t use them on the blueberries here, just hoped for the best that they would stay in place! (They did... mostly...)
