So I am actually incompetent at anything for costuming that isn’t just making accessories, I can’t even sew in a straight line with a sewing machine ok yikes (I’m not straight though so maybe it’s a sign but)

I am going to be making Viktor and Yuri’s matching outfits for a con and I have approximately 0% idea what I am doing? How the hell do I make a jacket? How do I make said jacket out of a material like chiffon?

The con isn’t until late July and I’m telling myself now I won’t procrastinate even though I obviously will but overall I’ll have lots of time to work on them.

The costume has three layers, the dress shirt, the inner layer, and then the outer shell. First, if you’re not familiar with sewing I’d start by buying the black dress shirts as a base. Put the shirt on, and pin some cheap white muslin to the surface, and mark out where your inner layer should go. That’ll give you a baseline for a pattern something like this:

Attach this layer to the dress shirt at the seams on top of the shoulders, the rest is loose, and will be held in place when it’s tucked into the pants. Use a seam ripper to remove the left sleeve of the dress shirt, and replace it with a sleeve made from your inner layer fabric. For the outermost layer, use the most sheer fabric you can find, keep in mind that this overlay will modify the appearance of the fabric underneath, so you can but the inner layer fabric a little darker than your reference. (In general, you can take a lot of liberties with fabric for this costume bc the lighting of the references is weird, and it’s animated so that textural qualities are ambiguous) If you have a simple jacket pattern, use that for the outer shell, and then add 2-3 inches to all dimensions (you’ll want the overlay to be loose so the costume moves with you) Sew the black thingys on to the edge of the outer layer, add your buttons. Then put the overlay onto the base, and attach the rope trim on the shoulders. All three layers are attached to each other only at the shoulder, and on the sleeves where you add buttons to hold the gloves up. For the gloves, i just bought some cheap black tights at target, cut off the legs and toes and hand stitched a divider for my thumb (google homestuck arm sleeve tutorial for more info) and put some black fabric on the fold edge.

Add rhinestones as desired. Use glitter fabric or glitter spray if you want.
