I listened to a new album today (for the first time in years).
It was Ben Belowâs Half-Sin, Half Virtue.
Because I was looking through his blog yesterday (because I was thinking about listening to Softwire) I saw where he said Love Shines Strong was about his grandmother, and, not remembering the title, but recognizing it was that song based on the line about time snatching the person away (and therefore that it was about death and not a breakup) immediately began crying, while standing in my late grandmotherâs home, whoâs been gone for nine years now. I have a hard time with faces and I am ashamed to say I donât feel I have enough specific memories of her. I also have regrets regarding the years leading up to her death. Got the confirmation that yes this was in fact the song about his grandmother with the line about the banjo and began crying again. And then my friend walked in.
And I spent 3.5 hours infodumping about the mechanisms because I never let myself do that and they werenât stopping me. I did have the music playing on the tv too.
Love Shines Strong may be the replacement I need for Walk Like Thunder, by Kimya Dawson, which I used to use to make me cry when I need to but couldnât. Unfortunately Walk Like Thunder doesnât make me cry every time any more.
If you want another song about a dead grandmother, For Unknown Reasons by The Killers is about Brandon Flowersâ grandmother
