Tamsy Caines, Mini Analysis
Spoiler alert for:
also, Buddha, Lucifer, vs. "THE ANGEL"----- I am new to the trash fandom, so if this has been pointed out before--good! I want to talk too, haha. Please interact with this post if you're willing! I need ideas, further breakdowns, and everything in between.
What if Tamsy Caines was based, or loosely inspired, by Buddha of World of Ragnarok?
But as in: Tamsy is Dark!Buddha, in a sense?
YES. They do share some physical attributes, but let's be honest: Tamsy is NOT that muscular. Buddha, from WoR? Look at those guns.
But I'm more interested in how they are "same same, but different." For context, I am NOT a Buddhist, and therefore, I may not know in-depth knowledge on the philosophy and mindframe. I know little, especially when I have been acquainted with the most thoughtful Buddhist I've ever had the privilege of knowing, known her for many years now. If you see this: I hope I did not misrepresent Buddha! --- First off, the first Buddha: Siddharta Gautama, who, different from my first perception, was NOT divine and this "zen" person at the start. According to what I've read, Buddha is a thoughtful, calm, and--I like this one--"ever-smiling". Before he became the Buddha, however, he as Gautama was very much man, as in he experienced human emotions that was implied to have affected him to a great extent. When he achieved enlightenment under the tree, he became enlightened. He is human, yes, nothing divine--but a human apparently free from the torment of vices. WoR's Buddha? I haven't watched it, but from what I've read, his behaviour is not quite quiet, so to speak. He's flashy, with a certain swagger to him. Perhaps something like a Tengen Uzui. Also, I do not presume the first Buddha--or any of the following Buddha after--was dripped out like this one. And now, Tamsy Caines. I would say I know Tamsy Caines more than I know the first Buddha and WoR's Buddha. Tamsy, in my opinion, is a direct contrast to IRL Buddha. I can even claim he is Dark!Buddha. From my understanding... 1) Tamsy displayed a certain facade of friendliness, with that soft smile. One we in the fandom literally called "the smile of an angel" before it blew up in our FACES. LITERALLY. Buddha was said to be "ever-smiling", but unlike Buddha, Tammy's was a literal mask to hide the more sadistic smile (inner Tamsy). 2) Apparently, Tamsy is free from trifling human emotions that could distract him. We the readers are the only ones aware of the sadistic side of him (for now). Buddha, from what I've gathered, viewed pain (the physical or emotional kind) as unavoidable (the first arrow), part of what humans will experience as humans. Buddha, however, teaches how we should emotionally approach the aftermath of a bad event (the second arrow), that pain "comes and goes", if I have worded it correctly. If you've read the manga, you will easily notice Tamsy has alluded to this state of mind as follows:
Your boy is NOT going to be affected by anything anymore. He is in the "unfazed" state now, a very twisted take in what Buddha would act but somewhat mimic what Buddha would think. Despite his multiple scars and missing pinky finger, which strongly suggested he suffered badly years before, he is now free from the second arrow. Nothing, not even in a staring contest against ARKHA CORVUS, could intimidate him. I reckon that would be Buddha too--but Buddha is compassion. Tamsy... well. That being said, this is where Tamsy is different from what I have perceived Buddha would not say?
At this stage of thinking, I am leaning more toward the idea of Tamsy being an amalgamation of every deity/religious figure when he was being designed. Something to think about, because Mymo has brought up the topic of "old kings"/gods. Something to think about, because every chapter is a quick, straight link to whoever was mentioned after. 3) Tamsy is sadistic, views pain as necessary, and is not above hurting people to "break Rudo out of his shell" so the 'Cerberus' (a whole other story) could fulfil his role. Tamsy, if it is true his design was intended to mirror a dark version of Buddha, has already failed three of the Five Precepts ("Do not kill", "do not steal", "do not lie"). He killed Regto. He stole Amo. He lied to Rudo's face about being curious and worried about Amo. All this, despite seemingly passing/not having the Three Poisons ("Greed/Attachments", "Anger", and "Ignorance"). Apparently. And his reasoning is--
Reading through this, I am more certain than ever Tamsy is obsessed with the idea of godhood, or something twisted of it. I strongly believe he was born in the Sphere, potentially not a tribal folk but born of a richer family that got too close to knowing information they should not. That, or a relative of Tamsy's has committed a crime, which somehow led to his horrendous scars. That. Or Tamsy himself has committed a crime, and was cast down from heaven like Lucifer, a play on his persona, 'The Angel.' Heck, maybe that was where he lost his pinky finger. Maybe he broke a promise.
His worldview is so eerily bent, his morals askew, but somehow, his ideals are based on "goodness". Goodness that is now obviously corrupt. I strongly believed he was honestly a kind heart before he turned into this... thing. Expect to see a Tamsy boss fight that could top Mymo. Mymo, unlike Tamsy, is prideful as hell. Pride comes before a fall. Mymo, unlike Tamsy, is this vengeful thing--toward the Sphere, Sphereites, and in extension, Rudo. From what I've gathered, Tamsy is not quite Dark!Buddha, then. He is simply 'the absence of compassion and humanity'.
"Tamsy is none of that! Tamsy is ever-smiling, kind, helpful Cleaner! Tamsy is an angel!"
