Imagine being bounced on your mother's knee and her cooing, "what a strong girl you are! You are going to grow so big! You are so brave, your grip is so strong, and your voice so loud!"

Imagine being dressed up for practical, comfortable clothes and having your hair out of the way, and then told to run wild. Imagine being given complex toys, a tool kit, toy swords and shields, mechanical toys, building blocks, kids' science and story books. Imagine being told, "she's so creative and innovative! She knows what she wants. She's always so curious and inventive."

Imagine all your family, relatives, babysitters and teachers describing you as a leader type, a moral guardian, a responsible and promising young girl, creative, strong, opinionated, intelligent. A future leader, an organizer, someone whose voice is loud and clear as it should be.

Imagine your maturing being a source of joy. You are getting taller, bigger, stronger and sturdier. You have a healthy appetite of a growing young woman. Your body is a powerhouse of survival. You get your period and it's celebrated, you are entering womanhood and showing the power of a lifegiver. Period is a sign that you are strong and healthy, your body is amazing. You get to decide what's for dinner at home because your growing body is a priority for all and you need to care for it.

Imagine respect of your peers and security among you. Imagine relying on other women like you without insecurity. Imagine being fearless, proud, content and limitless, full of promise and possibilities.

Now, I know that none of us got to live like that. But for a moment, imagine that you did, and then try to imagine the woman you would be today. What kind of a person is she? What does she want? What are her dreams, her possibilities? What limits and fears have been completely banished from her life?

How does she see herself?

On Monday, The Washington Post obtained hundreds of the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Dr. Anthony Fauci emails from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic through a Freedom of Information request, and published a story that showcases some of the contents. On Tuesday, Buzzfeed News received an even larger packet. The emails were not leaks or the result of hacks. They don’t show Fauci as some rogue element within the White House. And, despite the oblique threats of Republican Sen. Tom Cotton, they don’t show Fauci in any sort of conspiracy with China.

What they do show is very much what most people might expect having watched Fauci’s appearances over the last 18 months: a dedicated public servant who is very concerned about providing the right advice, frightened by what is clearly the most serious public health matter in a generation, confused by an administration that doesn’t seem to take that threat seriously, and very uncomfortable finding himself a controversial figure in the center of the national conversation. The hundreds of emails show Fauci very much wanting to do his job. They show the difficulty he had in trying to impress upon everyone how critical it was to mount a vigorous response to the pandemic in the face of a White House ready to take advice from everyone but experts.

And, despite it all, they show that even in private, Fauci was going out of his way to not complain about Donald Trump, even as Trump was taking actions that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Once their babies were born they were stolen from them and sold to rich Americans who wanted to adopt. The sickly babies who couldn’t be sold were murdered. Recently there was a septic tank full off 9000 dead babies that was found in Tuam in Ireland. The last Mother and Baby Home didn’t close until the 90s - this is recent history.

The Catholic Church has never faced any consequences for this, and many of the people in charge at these institutions are alive to this day. Many women who suffered through this are still alive and have never received any justice or compensation.

This happened to Irish women. And this is on top of countless abuses Irish women have suffered with regard to their reproductive rights in recent years and throughout history (Ireland has a very dark history with regard to forced pregnancy and our abortion laws, for example. There are a number of famous cases you can google there too). It’s absolutely not just WOC who are treated this way and it upsets me when Americans claim that white women cannot have possibly suffered this way, because it’s such a slap in the face to every woman who was killed or left crippled, or who spent years searching for a stolen child. It’s indicative of Americans having an incredibly limited worldview - they genuinely don’t understand that a world exists outside of the US, and that it’s different from their race relations there.

The women and girls who suffered in the Magdalene Laundries included those who were perceived to be ‘promiscuous’, unmarried mothers, the daughters of unmarried mothers, those who were considered a burden on their families or the State, those who had been sexually abused, or had grown up in the care of the Church and State. Confined for decades on end – and isolated from their families and society at large – many of these women became institutionalised over time and therefore became utterly dependent on the relevant convents and unfit to re-enter society unaided. I’m Jewish. I really don’t like when someone compares the genocide of 6 million of my people to being a Republican. When was the last time 6 million Republicans were murdered via gas chambers?
