chapter 4 is about escapism actually.

I keep seeing people say "chapter 4 was not about escapism" but i think it is. chapter 5 directly introduces the dark world adventures as an escapist activity, for susie, the player, kris, and also allitle bit ralsie. chapter 4 is about Susies escapism into the darkworlds. we see her talk about how she's never been chosen before this, how these adventures are so meaningful. we see her try to use the dark worlds to solve her problems and only making things strange.

Chapter 4 is not about the escapism of faith, (though there is good moments of that) its about susie escaping into the darkworlds. Into the prophecy.

and she bleeds for it.

I decided to sit down and concentrate and properly write the list of rules that qualify a character for this role.

FIRST LAW: This character must be a woman.

SECOND LAW: This character must be a loser, but not in a way that can be pinned on her gender. Misogynistic response from the audience does not disqualify the character.

THIRD LAW: If the audience does not enjoy this character, then it becomes impossible to enjoy the show/film/book/game altogether. It is not possible to ignore this character, for better or for worse.

FOURTH LAW: The character must make bad decisions, and not just be a victim of poor circumstances outside of her control. The character can also be a victim of poor circumstances outside of her control, but it has to be primarily her personal choices that deem her a loser.

Thanks to Tomodachi Life giving me crossover fic brain worms, I imagined a DR style killing game where ALL the contestants are fictional serial killers in some way. A contest to prove the superior murderer type of deal. Morgan at least gets to be in relatable company for once. I am teetering on whether or not to write it.

One thing that makes me kinda sad is seeing people who feel like TTRPGs just aren't for them because they bounced off of some element that is clearly just a symptom of them trying out D&D5e. Like people who have had a hard time with learning the rules would probably do well with any system where the rule formatting and play culture around learning them aren't a mess. One friend of mine didn't like waiting a long time for turns to come up in combat, not even knowing that many games don't even use a turn-based structure.

A lot of D&D5e defenders on here like to claim that asking someone to learn a new system is "gatekeeping" somehow, but I'd argue that acting like one game is emblematic of the entire medium to the exclusion of people who don't click with that one game is way more meaningfully a form of gatekeeping, even if it's fully unintentional.

I strongly believe that not all RPGs are gonna appeal to everyone, but there is an RPG out there for everyone, and I just hope that people who haven't clicked with the most common option to be introduced to can find something that works for them.

One other thing I'll tack onto this point is that this is kinda two different problems in a trench coat, there are things that people dislike in d&d because of genuine personal taste (which they assume are just part of TTRPGs) and there are things that people think they dislike because d&d does them specifically kinda badly (Which they then think are gonna feel just as bad in other TTRPGs)

For example, a lot of people will say "Oh I don't like TTRPG combat", and that's a fair take to have! I've personally seen some of these players do well with systems that either don't focus on combat or simplify/speed it up, but I've also seen just as many players start to really enjoy combat in systems that have more interesting mechanics for it!

Another big one is dungeon/survival mechanics. D&D5e survival mechanics tend to just feel like pointless bookkeeping that happens in the background because they aren't that well set-up to actually challenge people. There are a lot of systems where the survival mechanics are an actual challenging part of the game that can force PCs to make difficult choices, or really go out of their way to play smart to make it through a tough environment. Now, not everyone is gonna enjoy that type of game, but I do think that most people getting their first taste of it with D&D5e isn't really a good way to try it.
