depending on how frequently they update/how big the word count per chapter is, the more likely it is they literally gave money to ai to generate that shit

There's no excuse for any kind of generative ai use in fandom space. The whole point of participating in a fandom is creating works out of your own love for the source material, and sharing it with those who love that material just as much as you do. In a time where data centers are not only contributing to ongoing climate change, wasting water, and negatively impacting marginalized groups of people through environmental racism, using generative ai for something as personal yet inconsequential as writing fanfic is not an innocent action.

Of course there's something to be said about the reasons why people might be drawn to using gen ai for their works--clout-chasing, insecurity in writing skills, pressure from readers for more content--but the fact of the matter is that there's no reason to use gen ai at all. Fanfiction is, first and foremost, a hobby. No author owes any content to their readers. No reader is owed anything from an author, and they certainly don't need to spread word about works if they don't want to. Everything we do is for the love of the art and for the community we build. Using gen ai directly harms everyone, not just those in the writing space as ai constantly rips at popular works for its foundations. Using it harms the trust your readers have for you and harms your skills as a writer, all while negatively impacting the earth itself.

Stop using generative ai, and do not EVER condone it in fandom spaces. We don't want anything to do with it.

And as a personal message to those who will try defending any use of gen ai, from someone studying environmental science and currently living in the state with over SIX HUNDRED data centers that are contributing to the current heatwave and environmental deterioration:
