It’s nearly been a full day since arriving in this city without a clue where they were or how they even got here in the first place. A Long, arduous twenty-three hours now. Twenty-three hours filled with confusion, anger, frustration and hopelessness. Perched somewhere high where other humans wouldn’t reach them, Mad Rat sat at the ledge on the roof of a building, eyes narrowed as he watched everyone walk to and fro. It’s Cold. So Cold. Wasn’t it fall last he saw? The outside had plenty of dry, crispy, brown leaves. But here, the trees were bare, white blanketed the streets and he could visibly see the frost forming on his whiskers.
Beside him, Heart hovered there, watching along, only peering over at the rat once in a while to see how he was doing. Whatever he was feeling, was bound to be mutual. It didn’t make any sense!! Why did this happen? The attempt, the goal to leap back to the beginning of the day for Mad Rat to save him was obstructed by being pulled here suddenly... And what’s worse was that nearly a full day’s time had passed. Any moment now... He’ll stop beating. Mad Rat would die.
(Uh...) What do you even say in a scenario like this?! ‘Well we tried our best but ultimately failed!! May as well just accept our fate and pass on here in the snow!!’ No!! That’s a terrible thought!! ...Wait. Glancing to the side, Heart grabs hold of a handful of snow, packing it a bit before offering it to Mad Rat. (Uh, so, uhm... This is your first time seeing snow too, huh?) He asks, refraining to sound as bleak as he felt.
“Mmm... Mm-hmm... Well, not really...”
(Oh?)
“Yeah, I remember seeing it build up in the windows when it got colder. But I didn’t think it felt THIS cold. Sheesh. I can feel my tailbones stiffening.”
(Oh, That feeling!! Ha-ha!! You get used to it!) They grew silent again. Was there anytime to ‘get used to it’? (...Sorry.) Mad Rat shrugs, unfazed. (Are you... okay, Mad Rat?)
“I’d be lying if I said yes. I’ve been in this place almost a day and I absolutely hate it. I hate this place so much...” He grips onto his ears, seething. “I- We- We were so close!! We beat that false god, I rewound time!! I could have saved you. I could have-!!” Holding out his hands, gesturing to the sight ahead of them, he continues. “But instead, we-!!” What can be said that they don’t already know by this point? Resting his hands back on his legs, he shuts his eyes in deep thought. “I’m so sorry, Heart.” Wordlessly, Heart pulls him in for a hug, looking rather dejected as well.
(It- It’s okay. After all, I did say I wanted to die with you... You won’t be alone when it happens.)
“...yeah. Thanks for bein’ here with me then...”
Any moment now. Their time was up. Any moment now, Heart would stop beating and the rat would collapse.
...Any... Moment... Now... Mad Rat’s nose twitches in slight annoyance. How long was this going to take? The suspense was killing him!! He still has a pulse. He can feel it! Heart’s right here in his arms still beating away. He’s still warm! (Oh, I almost forgot. I promised I’d tell you didn’t I?) The rat’s attention wasn’t fully focused on what Heart was saying. Rather he’s focusing on how he’s physically feeling now. The cold still stings. The frost near his body slowly melting away. (You see, before all of this; Before the transplant. I- Mad Rat, I used to be a-)
“...Huh? That’s odd...”
(What? I didn’t say what it is yet...)
“No, no, not that.” Getting up from his position, the little rodent scans the area, then observes his own body; hands pawing at his chest, muzzle, tail. “What the hell...” Looking back out to the city, eyes dart around until he finds what he’s looking for. “No... Y- Yer kiddin’ me!! But- Wh?! HOW?!” Cracking a small toothy grin, he proceeds to tug on his whiskers, pulling until he can’t tolerate the pain. “OW!! Hah... SERIOUSLY?!”
(Mad Rat, please listen to me, I have to tell you this!!) Heart pleads, but just as he asks just that much from Mad Rat, the rodent laughs. (W-WHUH?! H-Hey!! I’m trying to have a moment with you here!! I’m trying to tell you about who I was before the operation!! What’s so funny?!) Pulling Heart closer towards him, Mad Rat points ahead of them at a city clock. (What about it? I’m not understanding you.)
“Our time is up!! Hell, we’re actually overdue!!” Heart stares at him, still confused. “Heart, I’m not dead! You’re not dead either!! We’re still-” Pumping his fists in the air, he hollers. “We’re still alive!!!!”
(W-)
(WHAT?! Are you sure we won’t in a moment or so?) Taking a moment to asses the situation, Heart pauses. (You’re right. We’re still-) Alive. But how?? (This isn’t a hallucination either. Hmmm...)
“You’re not happy?”
(No! I am!! I really am!! This is-) He crosses his arms. (This is just weird.)
“Yeah. It kinda is... I’m wantin’ to know how we’re still kicking too... And here I was, ready to just accept it. But-” He chuckles. “Honestly, I’m kinda too happy to care about the ‘how’ or ‘why’ right now!! I just wanna focus celebrating!!”
(Celebrating?)
“Celebrating us still living!! I’m still full of energy. I don’t feel slow or heavy or anything!! I still feel great!!” Pause. “I wanna know why I can’t rewind time far enough for us, or why we’re here at all, but... Ugh... I kinda don’t care right now!! I just wanna explore this place now!!” Hands on his side, Mad Rat snorts. “After I’ve had my fill, then I wanna find out what brought us here and why we can’t go back in time.”
(...)
“Whadda ya say?”
(...Alright. Let’s do it. I’ll support you no matter what, Mad Rat. you know that!)
“Hell Yeah!! Alright. Let’s get to trying to figure out some more things, but first... SNOOOOOOWWW!!!”

“I don’t believe this...” He grimaces. “I don’t understand!! I Don’t understand it at all!! Just how the hell did we wind up here?!” Mad Rat hisses, the sourness in his voice clear. Gripping onto his ears, he tries to make heads or tails of this all. He’s been here only a few minutes and yet he’s panicking. This wasn’t anything like the city he was living in before! This was new. Strange... There were humans around, but other things too. Other, non-human things. What the hell happened? He only tried to turn back time to save Heart!! Is this another trick from the parasite? Still trying to get in the way?! “This... This is a hallucination, right?! Heart! Please tell me I’m seeing things right now!!” He begs. “Slap me or punch me or anything!! Please!!”
Floating upwards to get a good look around for himself, Heart shuts his eye, hesitant to answer MR’s question. It really made no sense. Just no sense at all!!
“H-heart?”
(Mad Rat... I can see it too...)
“You’re joking... Please tell me you’re-” It’s a hallucination!! That’s what it was!! He... They want to believe it, to try and ignore the sight before them. “Wait-!! We can- We can still fix this!!” Placing his paws on his chest, Mad Rat focuses. A quick little rewind should fix this right? “I still can’t wrap my head around what happened, but this should fix this!! I need to get you back! I need to stop the operation!!” He’s used it time and time again in the last few hours. To have it somehow take him to a new place entirely? If it couldn’t shouldn’t that have happened twice over by now? ...Deep breaths. One... Two...
The sound of static. A familiar sound while doing this, but its strangely more deafening than before... Then it halts. “H-HUH?!” Opening his eyes again, it barely looks like time has changed much. They’re still in the city. Still sitting on the sidewalk. Time did rewind but only slightly. Mere seconds.
They’re still in this place.... “D-DAMMIT!! What the hell’s going on?!” While Mad Rat tries to get even a slight grip on the predicament they’re in, Heart notices someone nearby. Someone who might help provide some form of insight on what’s going on. A Mouse.
(H-Hey!! Mad Rat!! Mad Rat, look!!)
“W-what?”
Pointing not too far ahead of them, Heart singles out the small white mouse not too far from them. (There!! That mouse there!! Maybe they might know something?) Heart hopes so at least. For a moment, Mad Rat hesitates. The rats at the lab didn’t really want to talk with him, but as he was hallucinating at the time, of course they didn’t... and vice versa with the stray rats. They had been the ones to hallucinate. Who’s to say this wouldn’t be another repeat of that incident? Ugh... Swallowing his fear, the rat rushes over towards the lanky looking mouse, questions bouncing around his skull.
