Native instruments just released what a lot of Komplete users were waiting : A Keyboard.  A lot of Maschine users felt restrained with the only option of using  touchpads instead of keys to control Komplete. But Ni finally delivers everything we were waiting for : A keyboard integrated with Komplete.  Browse and tweak different functions of the multiple Komplete VSTs with knobs, touch strips, lighting guides and screens. Also, NI is releasing a new version of Komplete 10. The new software comes with three new major synths, along with a number of additional devices. Komplete Browser - Access to all KOMPLETE Instrument presets from one plug-in interface.

Native Map™ technology - automatically maps all key parameters for each KOMPLETE Instrument to the touch-sensitive controller knobs – all clearly visible on the keyboards’ Clear View™ display. Each instrument was carefully mapped by NI sound designers to arrange the most relevant parameters on pages laid out on the keyboard’s display.

Light Guide:  shows key switches, zones, and more on multi-color LEDs positioned just above the keys, and also provide performance feedback – scales, chords, and arpeggios light up across the keyboard as they are played.

Smart Play:. Chord mode lets producers play complex chords with single keys. Chord Set mode provides ready-to-play progressions that can inspire and augment original compositions or add new flavor to remixes. The integrated scale mapping features deliver fast access to new melodic possibilities – notes of the currently selected scale light up on the Light Guide. Many widely-used musical scales can also be mapped to the white keys.

iMaschine + iPad = Instant Magic [WATCH]

Recently Native Instruments released a new version of iMaschine on iPhone/iPod/iPad for anybody who likes how effective and user friendly Native Instruments products are and look but with a touch of live composition ala Ableton.

If you are not familiar with the software already, simply take a look at what it can do, in any context where a beat needs to be summoned. The result is impressive yet amusing!

Bitwig Studio Has Arrived!

It’s here! Yesterday was the official launch of the new Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Bitwig.

So I haven’t lied in my previous post about it. But what now? Should you run and buy yourself a copy (at 399$US) or wait for others to flood forums about how cool or deceiving the new DAW is?

Hardware Support

Just like Cubase, Reason or Logic, Bitwig seems pretty solid in terms of controller support. From Novation’s launchpad to Livid or Panorama keyboards, the integration seems simple and effective, and here’s another video to prove it to you (Panorama Nektar shown in the video):

Interface

The split sequencer setup allowing you to work one or the other is really one of Bitwig’s beauty. It might look like Ableton’s facelift but it’s one beast of its own. Display adjustment, full customization and preset view sizes are only a few examples of what makes Bitwig such a breathing, confortable-to-work-with platform.

Plugins & Instruments

Out of the box, the list of VSTs and plugins might seem a little bit thin. But after investigation, I believe Bitwig had opted for quality rather than quantity. You’ll find virtual analog, FM synthesis, organ emulations, a full-blown sampler, drum synthesis and a dedicated drum machine. And if that’s enough for you well, remember it’s only version 1.0?

Overview

Customized workflow and music creation to its core is really what the guys from Bitwig wanted to achieve. A lot of DAW on the market focus on music editing, recording, etc instead of music creation in and of itself unlike Bitwig Studio, they say. Controls and harmonization of VSTs, effects and plugin on Bitwig 1.0 seem to follow this route. At NAMM this year Dom from Bitwig gave us an overview of the software and what great things it can achieve in music creation workflow:

Only time will tell if Bitwig is a ground-breaking DAW, but to be honest it brings something new and fresh to the table. Added to its solidity, it also includes a sandbox system to allow your workflow to keep going even if a single plugin fails and next version should include a fully modular system, allowing you to map modulation routings between any device in your project.

How to Market Yourself as a DJ

In a world where even my (dead) grandma is a DJ, hard it is to make yourself a place as a Disc Jokey, whether you live in a big Metropolis or a small suburb.

Here are some hints and tips to help you market yourself right and get on the decks to do what you (should) love the most, spread good music.

- Building your Portfolio -

It’s always better when you have proper content to show off to promoters or bookers when you want to get hired.  The keywords of your portfolio should be value and facts; when bookers see value, they are more willing to hire you, especially if your bio is concise and straight forward. Building a decent yet not too exhaustive portfolio should help you get booked. Here are the things that should be included in your portfolio:

1. Bio

Short, concise and convincing, you don’t want to talk about how you grew up in a musical environment or how “cool” you are. Keep it to the facts, your accomplishments, how is your sound distinguishable, what releases you have and who you have performed with (keeping the ones who play similar to your genre). If you’re part of a record label, even independent, state it.

  2. Photos and Videos

Include under 8 photos and videos that translate your energy on the stage, the music you play and quality of the shows you played to. This is the part where you really want to shine, pictures and videos don’t lie but they are worth a thousand words…

  3. Productions and Mixtapes

As a tangible way to showcase your work, including a few of your best productions and mixtapes is the best way to demonstrate what genre you take care of in the booth. If you have no production, it’s okay, just include tight mixtapes that really fits your sound. Including a live set is always good as it shows how you’d perform on the spot. You might also want to choose mixtapes that have strong intros as you’ll want to catch the listener a swiftly as possible.

  4. Extra Material and Links

Any article, interview or post you want to add, as long as it is relevant, will help game up your bio. Add the links to your Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube / Vimeo, personal Website, etc. You’ll want to add contact information as well.

  Marketing is key, it’s strongly recommended that you put the same amount of effort in your DJing than in your portfolio as a source of motivation to collect and organize goals. The two last things to keep in mind while working on your portfolio is the timing and the customization. If you have a few new releases and are preparing a tour, even as small as it can be, that might be a better timing to send your material out there than when you haven’t spread anything new in months. Also, if you know the record label, agency, promoter, booker, or etc you are contacting, a nice touch is to customize your portfolio a bit so it fits better their “needs” or tastes.
