Pele flinched at the accusation. It stung, but she knew he had reasons to assume the worst from her.

“Even for beings like us, things happen for a reason we cannot understand and you have now a power that very few could imagine.” Anubis did not so much as shy away from her as she spoke about the loss and the pain. “You have to learn your path, it may have taken you from your family but there are things you might not see that have come from your powers. From this new life.” He would pour her some new tea, motioning her for to drink it and try to breath.

Pele reached for the tea, her grip weak as she brought the rim to her lips. It’s warmth was comforting, but it was not nearly as much comfort as she needed. She gave a shuddering sigh after a few sips, placing the cup on the table softly.

“I need to be honest with you...” she began, fingers drumming against the cup from nervousness. Her gaze hesitated to meet that of her fellow god.

“I have no intention of leaving this realm, Anubis. I don’t want to go back to Hawaii. I risk death at the hands of my sister if I return to those islands. I have a dwelling there, yes, but... it is not my home. And I can’t go anywhere else. I’ve tried before. The Aztecs, the Sioux, the Norse, the Greeks, the Hindu...... Some gave me a chance, only to banish me in time and forbid me from returning. Most denied me immediately on principle.”

Her drumming had morphed to a death grip now, and the cup was at risk of shattering in her hand.

“I have nowhere else to go. There is no where else I want to go. I wish to stay here...” her voice cracked noticeably ”...if you would allow that, Anubis.”

She finally looked into his eyes. Her own were absent of the threat of tears, but they radiated sorrow. Her orange orbs were soaked in the fear of an outcome she couldn’t control.

“Good question,” he mused, “Though, just because people call me that doesn’t mean I have to win every single game I play. Besides, I’m not so foolish to assume that I’d win against a god or goddess.”

Yuugi leaned forward slightly as he listened. He remembered Anubis saying something close to that once. The rules were different for the gods than they were for mortals and he’d have to be careful about that the more involved he got with that side of the universe. 

For a second, he jumped as her joke took a darker turn than he was expecting–though something about her expression hinted she wasn’t really serious. Quirking a brow he gave her a little smirk.

“I think Anubis would have something to say about that. Do you ever play games just for fun, without stakes?”

“You... know Anubis?” she asked, startled. She felt her face flush at the mention of his name, and the images it brought to mind- both memories and fantasies.

It made sense. Yuugi was the vessel of an Egyptian pharaoh. Of course Pele wasn’t the only deity he’d interacted with since Atem left this plane of existence. Of course the Egyptian pantheon would contact him. She had never assumed she was the first, but she hadn’t thought...

She let out a small sigh. Anubis was a good judge of character, being the god of judgment. And Pele trusted Anubis. Perhaps there was more to Yuugi than she had previously figured.

Pele’s posture relaxed a bit. She was still guarded, but now looked less hostile, less ready to attack.

“Christmas? You mean the holiday the invaders forced my people to celebrate after decimating our culture?”
