Ooo, you know thst prank where you don't say I love you back to your partner? Imagine doing that to Rumi, Zoey, and Mira ( separately).

None of these girls would respond to that prank well, rip.
âTalk to you later. Love you.â
âYep. See you later. Tell Mira and Zoey I said hi,â you had responded. Short, brief, and unusually curt. And most distinctively lacking any sort of âI love youâ in return.
Rumi stared at you, waiting for you to add those three words, but you stayed remarkably quiet, staring back at her with a growing look of confusion.
You always told her âI love youâ back. Why werenât you saying it this time?
"Uh...weren't you in a rush?" you asked, looking at her before glancing to the convention hall she was supposed to be in for a signing event. "Everything okay?"
No, everything was not okay. But she couldn't just say that.
Rumi noddedâto you or to herself she didn't know. Maybe you just hadn't heard her, that's it. Right? Right? Because thereâs no way you would have left her hanging like this otherwise.
âI will talk to you later," Rumi repeated slowly, "I love you.â
You blinked back up at her, âYeah, okay. Iâll see you later.â Still pointedly absent of a I love you back.
âI love you,â Rumi had tried again, stressing the words in hopes you would catch on.
âI know,â you replied just as easily.
âAs youâve established?â
Rumi felt her heart sinking lower and lower, her shoulders sagging, she probably looked like a kicked puppy in that moment. You werenât going to say it back to her, and her mind was starting to go over all the possible reasons for why.
She made you angry somehow. Thatâs what it was, wasnât it? Thatâs why you werenât saying âI love youâ back.
Was it something sheâd said that morning? Something she did? Orâand she hated this thought the mostâhad you just realized you didnât love her anymore?
âRight,â Rumiâs voice had trembled. âOkay⊠Iâll⊠Iâll see you after the signing.â
Maybe. If you still wanted to be with her, that is. Which she was starting to doubt was even the case. This was probably the last time she was going to see you.
Turning around, Rumi had began walking away, metaphorical tail tucked between her legs.
âHey, Rumi, wait a moment.â
She had barely turned around too face you before your mouth was on hers.
The kiss wasnât deep, but it was long, both savoring it before you pulled back and pressed your forehead to hers.
âLove you,â you said with a wicked grin.
It had just been a prank, you had explained. A simple âdonât say I love you backâ prank that served to be harder than it seemed.
Oh, you were absolutely sleeping on the couch tonight for playing with her like that. But Rumi, drawing you in for another kiss, was mostly just relieved to know you did still love her,
"Okay but you really should get going before you get in trouble for being late," you said when you broke the kiss again. "See you in a bit, Rumi, I love you."
"I love you," Rumi echoed, stealing one last kiss before leaving.
âIâm heading out, see you later, love you.â
You waved a hand at Mira in farewell. âSee you when you get back.â
That made her stop and pause at the elevator doors, backing up a few steps, she peered around the corner to stare at you. Your back was turned to hers, focus entirely on the lunch you were prepping in the kitchen.
âI said I love you,â Mira repeated, arms crossed over her chest as she waited for you to tell her the same.
âAlright, awesome,â you answered distantly as you cooked. âYou should get going if you donât want to be late.â
Oh. Miraâs had nightmares about this. Dreams where she told you she loves you and you donât say it back. Her heart is twisting and breaking in all the wrong ways.
She must have done something wrongâor maybe youâd finally realized she wasnât good enough, that you were tired of dealing with how difficult she could be and just didnât love that stubbornness of hers anymore.
That was it, she was certain.
Though Mira was starting to spiral, she kept on her mask, refusing to let you see how much your apparent apathy was affecting her.
âWhat? Youâre not going to say it back?â Mira demanded.
Finally you looked over your shoulder to give her a glance. âWhatâs got you so worked up? Youâre going to be late for your photoshoot.â
Her photoshoot could wait. This could not.
âIâm not going anywhere until you say it back.â
She didnât care how long this took; you were either going to tell her that you loved her back, or you were going to admit you didnât love her anymore.
Mira wasnât going to stand in some murky gray area wondering which it was.
âSay what back?â Oh, she could scream.
Instead, Mira approached you, letting the kitchen island serve as the divider as she slammed her hand on the marble surface. âI said I love you, and youâre supposed to sayâŠâ
âThanks,â you turned back to the food you were making, âyou too.â
Hand clenched into fist. âI said I. Love. You.â
You waved her off with another dismissive comment, and Mira lunged.
She sidestepped the island and in seconds had you trapped between her and the counter, her arms caging you in front of her so you couldnât run away.
âWhat is going on here?â she demanded.
 âWhat do you mean?â
âI keep saying âI love youâ and youâre not saying it back,â Mira snapped back, her fears and worries coming out as a burst of anger. âDo you love me or no? What is it?â
You stared at her for a little longer before your body sagged and you let out a croak of a laugh. All of which did nothing to soothe Miraâs hurt.
After a few seconds, you shook your head, âSorry, sorry,â you murmured, âI wasâit was a silly Tik-Tok prank. I promise, I do love you.â
Of course it was. God damn it, she felt like an idiot.
Mira let out a groan, leaning forward to press her face on the top of your head. âI hate you,â she muttered.
âNo you donât,â you teased back. âYou love me.â
âNo, I donât. Not anymore.â
âLiar. You love me, and I love you~â
âIâm heading to the gym, be back later. Love you!â
It should be second nature for you to say "I love you" back to her in a conversation, especially as a goodbye.
But youâd just smiled, waved, and bid her farewell with a simple âSee you later.â
Zoey hesitated at the door, waiting for you to finish that sentence, but nothing more came. You stayed dead silent across the roomâand all that did was cause her stomach to churn with something sour.
Why werenât you saying âI love youâ back? Did Zoey do something wrong? Were you annoyed with her?
It was just three simple words, they werenât that big of a deal, it shouldnât be, but they had her on edge, trying to figure out where she messed up.
So she slowly turned away from the door, tightening her grip on her bag. âUm. I love you?â she called out tentatively, hoping that maybe you just hadnât heard her the first time.
You peered back up at herâshruggedâand called back. âYeah, thanks.â
What in the hell was going on? Were you mad at her??? Was that it?
âZoey?â You called out, making her perk up, hanging on to a slim rush of hope. âI thought you said you were going to the gym? Whatâs up?â
Whatâs up? Whatâs up was that apparently you didnât love her anymore.
Did Zoey push you away somehow? Had she not been spending enough time with you? Not giving you enough attention?
Her schedule has been so busy lately, it was harder to find days where she could focus on her relationship, on you. She thought that was fine, you never said it bothered youâof course it would have bothered you!
Or maybe you just got tired of how overwhelming she could be. Zoey could talk your ear off, she got distracted easily, she probably annoyed you with her endless ramblings. She was too passionate, she was too clingy, she was too much.
Did the why even matter? You didnât love her anymore, plain and simple.
Thatâs why you werenât saying it back to her, thatâs why you were so in different right now.
Suddenly there were arms wrapped around her, pulling her into your chestâoh, Zoey hadnât realized sheâd started crying.
âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry, I didnât mean to make you cry, I am so sorry,â you were saying quickly as you held her. âI was just trying to do one of those dumb couple pranks. I didnât mean to upset you. I promise, I love you. I love you so, so much.â
A prankâoh, Zoey remembered seeing clips of pranks like this on her phone.
She scoffed, though the sound came out wet. âThatâs a stupid prank,â she muttered, burying her face into your shoulder as the fears started to subside. âYou love me?â
âI love you, always,â you assured her.
"Don't ever do something like that again, okay? It wasn't funny."
You pressed a kiss to her forehead, "I won't. Promise," you said before slowly letting her go. "Now you need to get going."
Giggling, Zoey stepped back and adjusted her grip on the bag. "Fine, fine. Trying to get rid of me already, I see how it is," she taunted, sticking out her tongue at you. "See you later, love you!"
"Love you," you echoed back like it was the most natural thing in the world.
