This is a critical part of sex positivity that tends to be overlooked. Let’s celebrate empowering amazing sex and the choice to not have sex, or only have certain kinds of sex.

I mean, yeah, pretty much every instance of ableism is bigger and more serious of an issue than things like people using words like st*pid, d*mb, etc. but think about it this way. If we don’t get rid of the mindset that drives those insults, the mindset that intelligence = worth, then the bigger stuff is never going to go away. Violence against disabled people will not go away. Lack of consideration for the needs of disabled people will not go away. The idea that disabled people are less human than neurotypical people will not go away. You may think it’s ridiculous sj bullshit when people call you out for using intelligence-based insults, but what you’re doing is perpetuating a very dangerous mindset that absolutely has to go away before any of the big “real” ableist issues can go away. You have to start with the little things.

You have a very good point, but this is unfortunately the incorrect way to go about it. For starters, many “Social Justice” crusaders are using this as an excuse to ignore bigger problems and focus on the ‘easy stuff’, preferring to focus completely on the words and doing little to nothing at all about serious and genuinely harmful ableism that are hurting us RIGHT NOW. You can include this in your activism, but don’t make it your *only* activism. Second, we need to attack the -mindset- itself, not censor the words or label them ‘slurs’. Think about it, what are discriminatory slurs? They are deliberate attacks upon traits that are more or less inherent and can’t be helped. The famous N-word is a slur because it’s an attack upon having black skin. ‘Redskin’ is obvious for the same reasons, as well as ‘wetback’, ‘chink’, ‘injun’, ‘sand monkey’, and ‘gyspy’. Then there’s ‘faggot’, ‘dyke’, and ‘queer’, which are slurs aimed at one’s sexual orientations, and ‘tranny’ for trans. Now what are genuine ableist slurs? The most obvious and well known one is ‘retard’, which refers solely to mental disability, and is an ableist slur because it uses mental disability as an insult. Then there’s ‘spastic’, which uses cerebral palsy for the same reason. ‘Cretin’ is like the previous, referring to mutations caused by congenital thyroid deficiency. ‘Mong’ and ‘mongoloid’ combines racism with ableism by assigning racist asian depictions to Downs Syndrome. People have begun to use ‘autistic’ in this way as well… Then there’s contextual slurs. Think of ‘monkey’ and ‘oreo’. By their own, they’re harmless words that mean other things, but become slurs if used specifically to refer to black people. Here’s a few examples of contextual ableist slurs: ‘dumb’ is a slur if used against deaf or mute people, ‘cripple’ is a slur against physically handicapped people. ‘Windowlicker’ is an odd instance- it’s a slur against the mentally disabled, but due to a very popular song named ‘Windowlicker’ as well, more people associate the word to the song rather than the slur now. I’m sure there’s a couple others I’ve forgotten at the moment. Seeing a pattern? All of the slurs I have mentioned are intentionally meant to reference or attack inherent traits. That’s what people think of when they use such words. Now, knowing this… What do you think you’re implying if you try to label words like ‘stupid’ or ‘moron’, which signify incompetence and/or lack of intelligence, as slurs towards the mentally disabled? See the problem? By specifically categorizing intelligence-based words as slurs towards the mentally disabled, you are just helping cement the association between disability and lack of intelligence further. That’s the opposite of what we want! We need to SEPARATE stupidity from disability and prove that disabled people can be intelligent and smart nonetheless, not convince people that disabled people are inherently stupid and as such ‘stupid’ is a slur! Stop saying “Stupid is a slur against the disabled!” and start saying “Disabled people can be just as smart as any of us!” and we’ll be on the right path. ~Synch
