This sounds just like a scene from His Veela Heritage by RiverWriter with the vow for safety since he's a Veela and Neville knowing beforehand, but they’re Veela mates and Hermione isn’t a pureblood!

Sirius returns and it turns out that he is a death eater and his death was part of a terrorist plot, but he still cares for Hermione. James arrives and there is a duel and iirc Sirius dies.
