Machinic scape

Our project aims to reconsider the notion of territory as a field of design “praxis”.The research takes place in Evros region and especially in the river delta.

Taking into account the simultaneous coexistence of different and frequently conflicting elements of the scape, in order to understand better their specific characteristics, we “read” the landscape under six fundamental categories: NATURAL, MANMADE, MATERIAL, FIELDS, ECOLOGIES, FLOWS.

Mental tool

The combination of these diagrams gave the idea of a mental tool that can read the landscape in multiple ways. The intention behind this tool is not the subdivision of the field, but instead, its dynamic disruption.

“Hacking” existing typologies

Using this tool for further exploration of the natural/manmade relations, we focused on industrial and military infrastructures such as SILO, WATERTOWERS, BUNKERS, and WATCHTOWERS and their relation with the environmental implications of Evros such as flooding problems, earth erosion because of exceeding irrigation and generally the water management of the area. In this condition, the relation between manmade structures and environment seems to be absent. What we will try to do is to activate this twofold relation in both directions, that is to manage the landscape as a mechanism, but also the mechanisms as landscape. �
