Piebald Weimaraners look like German Shorthaired Pointers that are gray. The question of course is, are they purebred? On first glance, most anyone would assume cross breeding. Word is, it’s likely that Weimaraners have been bred to Pointers in the last 40 years. Could they be the result of more Pointer blood than Weimaraner? Maybe. However, most Pointer and Weimaraner cross bred dogs produce solid colored dogs. Genetically Pointers don’t carry the dilute gene, so the resulting cross should be a solid brown or black dog. 

Another idea to consider is that the Weimaraner and German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) shared the stud book in the breed’s beginnings in the 1800′s.  GSPs have been known to occasionally produce a gray spotted dog. This may mean that the GSP still “carries” the recessive dilute gene. The dilute gene is present in ALL Weimaraners which makes it the distinctive gray color (or blue). The piebald gene is also recessive, meaning a dog needs two copies for the pattern to be present. That means that perhaps the piebalds of today are atavistic, in other words, “throwbacks.”

In 2013 the Epplen lab at Ruhr University in Germany was able to test the DNA of a German bred female piebald Weimaraner from two solid gray parents. They found that “This exceptional coat colour pattern can be attributed to a mutation in the KIT gene, emphasising the possible role of KIT in white spotting.” By DNA they verified that the piebald’s parents were indeed the two solid gray parents as presented to them. They also found that the mutation wasn’t found in the parents, nor the solid gray littermates.

I have never done anything like this before. And it makes me massively nervous to be doing it now.

If you know me, you know I hate to ask for help. There’s a level of vulnerability in it that I am not comfortable with. But this is not for me. This is for my very special Evie-bug, who I would move heaven and earth for. So I have to ask it.

We are a low income family. I have always maintained a savings account for emergencies but I have never expected expenses like this. Ones that would leave me utterly pennyless.

Evie is my 4 year old bully breed mutt and she is my heart and soul. On Wednesday, January 31st, she was behaving abnormally, and throughout the night her discomfort steadily grew. A quick nightly ER visit assured us that she had simply pulled a muscle in her back and she was just in a lot of pain. But come the next morning, her back legs were paralyzed and she could not walk. Rushing her to our primary veterinarian, x-rays displayed issues with her spine, and she was referred to a specialist surgeon an hour away. We took her in immediately where she was diagnosed with a massive herniated disc and was taken without hesitation into surgery. The procedure went well and prognosis is good - with any luck, my girl will regain the use of her legs and live normally in time, assuming her recovery goes along without any complications, but as I’ve often learned, there are no guarantees in life.

The estimated costs of the procedure are $3000-$5000. My dog is worth all of the money in the world to me, but I am simply a hotel night auditor from Kentucky who has ambitions of someday starting a photography business. I need help to cover her costs. This bill was sudden and unexpected and I am struggling, but there is not a cost in the world too great for my girl, especially as she is so young and I’d do anything to ensure she can walk again and live the rest of her life normally, as at 4 years old, she should have many years left to enjoy life and live to the fullest.

All funds donated will go directly to Evie’s medical costs. She is my absolute priority, and if it weren’t for her benefit, I don’t think I’d be asking for this help.
