When you go to the store and forget your bag.

Think of it this way: if you arent going to eat for yourself, eat for your organs. Eat for your cells. Eat so that your heart can keep pumping blood through your body, eat so that you cells can keep making ATP so they can function. Eat so that the ribosomes in your cells can keep making proteins, eat so your endoplasmic reticulum can make phospholipids and transport them to the golgi apparatus so they can be modified and transport to the cell membrane. Eat so that every piece of your body has what it needs so that you can wake up everyday and live a fulfilling life

Ask them what specifically it is about humans designating one animal as “food” and one as “pets” which fundamentally changes the morality of eating them. If it is nothing inherent in the animal which makes it okay to eat one but not the other, then is it just okay pretty much “because we say so?” That’s hardly a good argument. Moreover, ask them if it’s okay to eat dogs in cases where they are bred to be consumed, as they absolutely are in many places. Does that suddenly make it okay? Reversing that, if a pig has been bred as a pet but ends up in a farm, is it okay to eat that pig? If not, why not? Some very basic questioning should expose how flawed this reasoning is.
