the truest ADHD ally of our time was my professor who during a field exam handed me a newt and told me to hold it and I was likeĀ āwhat do you want me to do with thisā thinking it was for the test and he shrugged and saidĀ āitās just to keep ya busyā
not to be cheesy but my wildlife professors who probably had little to no training specific to teaching students with learning & developmental disabilities still really understood how to teach those students and I have to believe itās because they have dedicated their lives to understanding life and its value on even the most microscopic level and theyāve learned patience from studying the most still animals and the change in a prairie over time and the growth of trees and they really do go out to the woods to find peace and to share their passion with students and theyāre the type of people who stop to listen before they speakĀ
and certain things become clear to a person like that, the sort of person who has spent their life listening and learning and letting the world show them things they donāt know
so when they end up with a student with trouble staying still and being quite during tests, things like this are easy for them. he knew amphibians were my special interest. he knew I needed to be occupied. so he saidĀ āhereās a newtā
I wish every teacher were like those professors I was so lucky to have
idk itās a common joke among wildlife professionals that they got into their work because they donāt like dealing with people but Iāve often found that doing what they do has made them some of the most empathetic, thoughtful people Iāve ever met
destroy the idea that crying is negative. crying is relief, a way to let all of the sadness, anger, joy and emotion out. end the idea that we need to stop crying, stop letting out emotion, stop being human. end it.
me, a canadian, talking to an american whoās sick or hurt: have you triedāno wait that costs money for you⦠what aboutāno no, that costs you money too, doesnāt it? ā¦god, thatās absolutely fucking nonsense, eh? what do they expect you to do??? die????????
americans to me: yes

this may be an Unpopular Opinion (even on tumblr) but like the 8-hour workday is just Too Gotdamn Long
like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isnāt particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when weāre talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal
doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when weāre talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY
i might just be a lazy weak-willed bitch but honestly i think iām not entirely wrong
this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.
even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixonās bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.Ā
The IWW realised this and were fighting for it all the way back in the 1930s. This is a take with a lot of historical and theoretical grounding, OP, so youāre standing in good stead.
Iād also like to add itās also been studied and scientifically proven that after 6 hours, we have an extremely noticeable drop in productivity. Sweden saw nothing but benefits from a 6-hour work day, including worker productivity, happiness, and half the amount of sick-leave used when applied to nurses.

my grandparents have to lock their car doors when they go to sunday mass because people have been breaking in to unlocked cars and leaving entire piles of zucchini
i feel like i shouldāve added more context when i posted this. my grandparents live in a rural area where farmers and casual gardeners alike are, at this point in the year, suddenly being hit with unexpectedly abundant zucchini crops. there arenāt just some random vandals leaving zucchinis in peopleās cars for the hell of it, this is the work of some very exasperated, probably very elderly, folks who have more zucchini than they know what to do with
Yep. You can also expect to find a bag of zucchini on your porch.
My grandfather once found his neighbor stealing his tomatoes out of his garden at three in the morning. Red-handed, with a basket of the nearly-ripened ones. Ā He thought he was going to find gophers or something, but no,Ā hereās Henry, taking his tomatoes. The best ones.
There was a long pause between them.
My grandfather (allegedly) said,Ā āHenry⦠itās OK. Ā You can take some tomatoes if you want them.ā
Henry sighed in relief.
āBut,ā my grandfather said,Ā āyou have to take two zucchini for every tomato.ā
There was another long silence. Ā āThatās a harsh bargain, John,ā said Henry. Ā āBut I accept. Ā Iāll tell Joe up the street, too.ā
My grandfather said,Ā āTell Joe he needs to take three.ā
a friend of my dadās came by in the middle of the night, he seemed very nervous when my dad answered the door. he wouldnāt come inside but he leaned in and whispered to my dad in spanish,Ā āi have some fresh grapes for you.ā and then this happened:
the melon was a special bonus.
MY DREAM
A friend of mine lives in a rural area and he has been surrounded by zucchini for most of May, June, and July.
At one point he was so done with the whole zucchini madness that he came to classes actively begging people to āPlease please please!! Take some my familyās damned zucchini!! Iāve been eating zucchini for weeks!! Iām going insane!!!ā
Having grown up in a rural area and having come home to zucchini on the front step or in the mailbox, i find it highly amusing the OP had to clarify. Ā Iām sitting here noddingĀ āyup.ā
I have a friend with a garden in Oregon who literally made Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies and sent them to me in Indiana. I texted her back āI SEE WHAT YOUāRE DOING HEREā
Iām waiting for the day when someone will hear about my background in Botany and ask me for advice on what someone whoās just wanting to start exploring planting vegetables should try.
I know fuckall about gardening because my background is wild plants and not agriculture, but Iām gonna tell them
āZucchini. Definitely try Zucchini. Just plant plenty of them and youāll get a decent sized crop! Theyāre very rewarding to grow.ā
It may be a bit of a long game, but Iāll enjoy their screams of despair from across the void as they realize that they will eat zucchini forever

Important Info for Witches in US!
okay a LOT of people donāt seem to know this so iām putting it here too.
In all 50 states in the US, teaching witchcraft (or any other religion) to minors (under 18 in 48 states, 21 in Mississippi) without the full knowledge & consent of parents/guardian is illegal. aka this means fines or even jail time.
you can advise them to do research, attend spiritual events, meditate, and things like that but you can NOT mentor them or give any sort of direct information. i recommend a signed consent form from the parents to prevent any legal issues.
likewise, if you are <18 in the US, do not seek out a mentor if your parents havenāt given you permission!! you could get someone in serious trouble. if you know your parents would not consent to it, do your own research and then seek guidance when you are of age. It is safer for multiple reasons that way.
i donāt know the laws in other countries but i suggest looking into it!

Did You Know Tomatoes Hate Cucumbers? Secrets of Companion Planting
While they might taste great together in a salad, tomato plants actually dislike growing in close proximity to any member of the cucurbit family, which includes cucumbers.
Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. They can be part of a biological pest control program.
