Jooklo Duo & Riccardo Sinigaglia (IT) The duo Jooklo (Virginia Genta and David Vanzan) and Riccardo Sinigaglia (founder of the legendary Futuro Antico and Correnti Magnetiche) met in November 2015 in Milan, at a studio session organised by Black Sweat Records. The collaboration that grew out of this meeting is an ever-evolving electro-acoustic research which (according to the participants) invokes “ancient rituals, deeply rooted in improvisation and abstract structures aiming to a complete fusion of several sound sources.” Sinigaglia and Jooklo utilise Farfisa organ, synthesizers, reeds, and percussion to create harmonious but often challenging results. Expect “old and new dreams of Italy’s finest psychedelia and “new shapes (in) the realm of mystic music.” Duke S. (NL) Duke S. is the project of Étienne Baudet. Baudet’s sound is a quirky mix of synthetic exotica, Sun Ra-esque electro jazz and ambient, laced with “faux field recordings”[sic]. The feeling is both futuristic and outdated, evoking ancient Egypt as well as adventures in outer space. At times the sound has something of Finnish composer Pekka Airaksinen. Live shows are accompanied by 8-bit visuals and of course cactuses.

Novo Line (US) Novo Line uses outdated equipment to create hyper-modern idiosyncratic destructions of Electronic Dance Music. His LP Movements was one of our favourite records of 2016 here at MiMa HQ. Highly recommended to fans of Lorenzo Senni, Actress, Lee Gamble, Theo Burt etc. “You’d have to be either a madman or a genius to make music with two obsolete Atari ST computers in 2016. But this kind of constraint is essential for the artistic approach of Nat Fowler, aka Novo Line, who likes to push old synthesizers an archaic software to their limits while imposing extreme musical restrictions to himself. Kaumwald (FR / Opal Tapes) Kaumwald is the duo of Ernest Bergez and Clément Vercelletto from Lyon, France. On their 2016 LP “Rapa Nui Clan” (Opal Tapes) we can hear a suite of totally bugged out improv techno and electroacoustic burn out’s entitled. They’re a hard act to define, unifying the tabletop thrift attack of AMM or early Wolf Eyes against bold modular driven beats rich with crust. The duo’s machines interlace this time with more pronounced vocals often rendered in absurd pitches or drawn out into oblivious texture. As with any voyage there is a wealth of information to process, this is the sound of information frying in the pan as the ship readjusts it’s course. (Anost) JSCA (NL / Dehef) JSCA is a duo from Rotterdam. Named after a song by obscure 80’s act Monoton, they create repetitive electronic music with an eerie atmosphere. Pulsating sine- and square waves, clattering synth noises and detached female vocals.

Ensemble Economique (US) California-born artist Brian Pyle, the mastermind behind the project Ensemble Economique, describes his own music on his Facebook page “as if day and night are colliding”. Through his use of dark, sawing bass complemented by glimmering bright synths Pyle conveys an austere solemnity countered by hints of uplifting discovery, delicately holding the clash of contradiction on a precipice in his work. Big tip for fans of ambient synth music, and the surreal works of Angelo Badalamenti for David Lynch's soundtracks. Jung An Tagen (AUT) Mind-melting, abstract, rhythmic electronics from Vienna. Jung An Tagen is the latest alias of Stefan Juster, formerly known as Cruise Family (Not Not Fun) and Stefan Kushima (Blackest Rainbow), etc. He creates carefully sculpted and ever-changing modular rhythms where repetitive figures & polyrhythmic textures circulate around distinctive timbres, resulting is a vision of morphing movements between high energy and zero gravity states. France (fr) Imagine Tony Conrad & Faust reincarnated as a French punk trio in 2016, using only a minimal drum kit, bass guitar and hurdy-gurdy to drone you into another dimension. The set-up is simple but the results are mind-blowing. Repetitive pulsating rhythms, with pounding overtones created by the overdriven hurdy-gurdy. Obviously this stuff works best in a live-setting, with the amps cranked up to 11. Eklin started as a fairly abstract instrumental electronix trio in 2009 but evolved into a five piece band that produced a strange hybrid of atmospheric dreampop with female vocals and dubbed out trance rock as heard on their full-length Onwa. Nowadays Eklin seems to be operating mainly as a live unit with an ever changing line-up, chunking out improvised instrumental jams that focusses on their trance rock aspect. PELADA (New, CA) MONTREAL TECHNO DUO, IN THE SPIRIT OF EBM, PUNK, AND MORE AGGRESSIVE FORMS OF SUBVERSIVE DANCE MUSIC Rising stars of the Montreal electronic scene, Pelada have resonated with audiences for their unique blend of Chicago house, Detroit techno, and fierce Spanish vocals. The duo, comprised of vocalist Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, recontextualize dance music in the spirit of EBM, punk, and more aggressive forms of subversive music. The resulting balance creates a sound without computers, combining a patchwork of sequenced analogue synths, drum machines, and samplers that is both urgent and powerful. As a result, their live sets are living and breathing entities, energetic and combative. They grew out of the city’s infamous underground afterhours warehouse scene, performing alongside DJs, punk bands, and experimental sound artists. These large parties are often illegal, populated by an eclectic mix of punks, club kids, and freaks, promoting a spirit of inclusiveness and open-mindedness. Pelada embraces this diverse crowd united by a shared interest in letting loose, unsatisfied by what is being offered in mainstream clubs. After more than a year of live performance, including shows with Pharmakon (Sacred Bones), Pelada dropped their first EP ‘No Hay / Ten Cuidado’ on January 1st. Bird People are a drone band formed in 2010 by Ulrich Rois. Solo and with a host of collaborators Rois has since explored various forms of extended tone music, often influenced by drone-based folk music, Hindustani music and early minimalism. Bird People have toured extensively throughout Europe and have shared the stage with MV+EE, Sylvester Anfang II, Hellvete, Head of Wantastiquet and Rhys Chatham, among many others. Recently Bird People have performed in a band line-up focussing on predominantly acoustic free drone music. Pandelindio is a self-described "solo and collective project of experimental and ritualistic music" from Argentina, founded by Federico Fossati. On "Fuego y Soma", Pandelindio create a unique blend of drone-based jams with strong Indian and Middle-Eastern flavors, comprised of field recordings, box tambura, didgeridoo, violin, shehnai, bansuri, harmonium and chanting. Harry Hoogstraten is a Dutch beat poet and visual artist who has been a key figure in the European underground poetry scene of the last few decades. He edited the literary magazines Mandala and Abracadabra, organised the One World Poetry festivals in Amsterdam and worked with Steve Lacy, James Koller and Franco Beltrametti. Hoogstraten writes in Dutch, English, German, Italian etc: working with breath and sound being the most important which gives his poetry a musical quality. 'His readings are sometimes almost chanting, sometimes in machine-gun bursts of lines out of which he would often break into a quiet and lyrical passage.’

Guttersnipe (uk) Wild disruptive noise/rock duo from Leeds, UK. New Wave of British Hysterical Mania (- Cafe Oto- ). Drums, guitar, synth and vocals. Ear piercing six strings and bowel shattering sub basses to psychedelic effect. Seriously these youngsters kick arse big time. Probably THE best show we saw at Kraak Festival this year. Repetitive industrial electronics created with Korg MS10 synthesizer, tapes, sine waves, effects and vocals. Their recent European tour with Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides saw them moving to a more restraint, cinematic sound. Their recent diet of late night horror movies will push their new sound even further into new realms of the unknown.
