Lyrics In Rhythm

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been dying to get my hands on Adele’s newest album, “25″, which came out back in November. Unfortunately, she hasn’t released any songs on YouTube yet except for her singles, “Hello” and “When We Were Young” She has however sang “All I Ask” on the Ellen Show, which her fans are able to view. 

As for the rest of the her songs, her fans can only find covers done by others who we can only assume bought her album themselves. A particular favorite cover of mine is “Love in the Dark”, covered by YouTuber Allison Marshall. The special thing about this cover is the strings in the background. In the original song, there are strings, but I feel like they’re not as prominent as they were made in this specific cover. 

Now, when it comes to the meaning of this song... Boy, does it hit home. It’s just such a familiar feeling listening to these lyrics. People always wonder how I manage to connect a personal experience to so many different and widely ranging songs. Music just makes my world a totally different place. It’s like a child within its mother’s womb. It feels safe and protected from the terrible world outside. Music is the womb and I am the child. It completely surrounds me and I give it total control to take over.

This song is about a person who no longer loves their significant other. They’re trying to do the right thing and walk away from them in order to protect them and be kind. The problem is their lover has changed them in so many ways that walking away is becoming a more difficult decision the longer they drag it out. They don’t want to hurt them, but their love is too far gone; they have drifted into two separate worlds and too much happened within that distance, making it impossible to find their way back to how it used to be. 

Lemme tell ya’ll something. BEYONCÉ’S DONE IT. 

The drop of her new album “Lemonade” on April 23 most definitely has everyone talking. Now, as of today, her songs mainly, with the exception of her single Formation, are not yet out on YouTube. As a broke girl, you know I’m not about to spend $17.99 on iTunes for an album consisting of thirteen songs.

This album seems to have press buzzing about an affair Jay Z had with fashion designer Rachael Roy. Now, unfortunately, an innocent being has been dragged into this mess: Rachael Ray. Many have mistaken her for the real mistress and have been blowing up her social media with lemon emojis. Rachael Ray responded with a lovely lemonade recipe and all the haters to sip on. 

I have just listened to the previews, but her sound for this album is legit and so different from her recent “brand” or sound. You can definitely hear the difference in the second song on the album, “Hold Up”. It starts with a more reggae sound before bringing in the rest of the beats, but I was really feeling how they kept the reggae beat in the background throughout the rest of the song.

My favorites are a toss up between “Daddy Lessons” and “Sorry”. “Daddy Lessons” really hits the core for me with the acoustic guitar. It’s so simple, yet reaches at that depth that really knows how to draw a person in to listen more to the lyrics. It’s really a nice drawback from all her heavy, machine-controlled beats. The lyrics talk about her father and how he told her to shoot whenever a man like him came around. And yet another shot at Jay Z, 

“My daddy warned me about men like you He said baby girl he's playing you He's playing you

Cause when trouble comes in town And men like me come around Oh, my daddy said shoot”

On the other hand, “Sorry” is the “fuck you, I’m done with you” song on the album in my opinion. This is the song that really gives you the sense of Jay Z’s affair. 

She says, 

“Sorry, I ain’t sorry... 

Looking at my watch, he shoulda been home Today I regret the night I put that ring on He always got them fucking excuses I pray to the Lord you reveal what his truth is.”

Whenever a new album drops by an artist I love, I immediately look for the ballads. I don’t know why that is, but that’s what I do. I look for the soft, sad, romantic slow songs. Beyonce’s “Sandcastles” was the perfect touch to her album. It really expressed the heartbreak in their relationship. Although, it’s difficult to figure out from which perspective she’s singing from. At first, I thought it was from her point of view, but then the lyrics switch to,

“Bitch, I scratched out your name and your face...

And your heart is broken cause I walked away Show me your scars and I won't walk away And I know I promised that I couldn't stay”

which gave me the impression that she’s talking from Jay Z’s perspective and how he’s the one who strayed from her. 

“Lemonade” was first made available on Tidal, Jay Z’s streaming service, so obviously he had to hear all of these songs and approve of them before putting them online. He knew the backlash that he would get for them. 

Recently, I introduced classmates to a favorite song of mine that happens to be in another language: German. I was interested in hearing their feedback on it, considering the song is not in English. It just so happened to be for our video project and in our project, everyone was to give their reaction to the song.

The new song is “Alles Neu” by Peter Fox.  

I figured this song was golden to use because it’s so unique in it’s entirety. Whenever I show this song to anyone, I always always ALWAYS make them watch the music video. I think it’s a key aspect to listening to the song that they know nothing about, while being unable to understand the lyrics. Now, that would make you think that the music video tells whatever story the lyrics are portraying. 

Well. You thought wrong. 

The roughly translated version of the song means this:

Obviously, the song barely has an purpose. It doesn’t tell a story or anything...and that’s what I love about it. I think combining the fact that it has no real meaning with the music video just makes it pure entertainment. 

I always thought the monkey masks were such an odd and uncomfortable choice to include in the video. In the lyrics, there is no hint at monkeys of any sort, which makes you wonder where they got the idea to include that in this video. 

I have taken German here at school and some of my family speaks it as well, so listening to German music isn’t totally out of my comfort zone. I enjoy it even though I may not always know what they're saying. This song specifically was introduced to me by my Elementary German teacher here at Rutgers and I fell in love. I’ve never heard such an upbeat, “club-ish” (if you’d even call it that) German song before. It’s usually a song I turn to when I want to feel uplifted or when I want to get something done. It usually just triggers something in my mind that just makes me finger type faster or whatever else I may be doing. 

It was fun to see the rest of the class find laughter in watching the video and hearing my classmate’s reaction to it. That’s always the amusing part to me. What are other people’s first reaction to it? Will they laugh? Are they confused? Will they ask me what they are saying? Do they even care? Their reactions are always what I look forward to most. 

So, recently I have started watching the TV show Nashville, starring Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton and have fallen in love with it. For those of you who watch or know of the show Empire, well, Nashville could possibly be considered the country version of that. It filled with tons of drama and music, obviously; therefore, the characters in the show are constantly creating new music. The songs usually represent the situations that the characters are facing at the time when they are introduced in the show. So, I took it upon myself to download a few of them on my iTunes.

Now, most of the songs are love songs, which are my favorite songs to listen to.

Here are a few of the songs I have enjoyed so far:

This song goes out to anyone who is going through a break up or separation from someone they love/want, but have to try and fight the urge to not call that person or tell them how much they miss each other. Its about moving on and not going for that second chance just because you think things may work out differently the next time around. Trying things a second time around only means goodbye will be that much harder when things fall apart yet again.

Also, Hayden’s song “Telescope” was actually released as a real single for her label instead of just being another song of the soundtrack. This brought in more of an attraction towards herself as an artist and to the show.

Today we’re going to discuss a favorite instrumental of mine: 

 A River Flows in You by Yiruma 

This track does not contain any lyrics and it is strictly just a piano, but for such a simple recording, the song itself truly has so much power. I discovered this track back in 2008 when the Twilight Saga series came out. Despite not having any lyrics, I frequently listen to this song on repeat for hours. Some people may believe that just because this track only contains one instrument that it’s boring or there’s limited conversation about it. Wrong. This one instrument is played so elegantly and effortlessly that it feels like walking on air.

The piano flows in such a particular way that you couldn’t imagine ever trying to change its form. There are no peculiar key changes or any production features, but the notes speak for themselves. Sometimes when you think it’ll go to a certain note, it doesn’t and does exactly the opposite of what you may have expected. 

The bass notes compliment the melody beautifully and there is no dissonance at all. It’s easy to pick out the “chorus” of the song that repeats every so often as well. The chorus can be easily pointed out due to the dynamics that are used. It gradually becomes louder as if to show the prominence of that section. If you were to look at the sheet music for this piece, I could only imagine that it would say “Grazioso” meaning to play the music gracefully. 

At 2:09, the piano turns into an adagio tempo and you almost can just feel your heart drop with it. It really sets the mood for the piano almost turns into this gracious, angelic melody. 

Now there is a particular cover of this song that I do enjoy as well, involving a well-known Youtuber, Lindsey Sterling, who is famous for her magnificent violin skills. She covers this song with Debbi Johanson, which you can find here. 

It’s hard to decide which version of the song I personally like more. Lindsey does change up the notes a little and I can tell that from just listening to the original version so much and being able to pick out the differences by ear. Her friend Debbi is on the harp alongside her and these two instruments could not have been more perfectly harmonious. They compliment each other so well and only enhance the other. Neither instrument is drowned out by the other. 

The only odd thing about this cover is it feels to be shorter than the original song, when in fact it isn’t. They are both the same length. I believe the addition of another instrument in the cover takes away from the focus you have on just the piano when listening to the original. In the original, you hang on every note the piano plays and because it is solo, it creates the illusion of a longer piece. Meanwhile, when listening to the cover, your ear is attracted to two different sounds and you go back and forth trying to pinpoint both sounds which makes the piece seem to fly by. 

You know those times where you don’t really know exactly what emotion you’re feeling, but you know its a combination of something important? A mix of sad or lonely or happy and hopeful--all put into one giant emotion? Maybe, you want a song that can boost you up from however you’re feeling. Well usually when I’m in this weird stage, any slow(ish) song will hit home hard. To be honest, it doesn’t take much for a good, slow song to make me cry. The five songs I picked are really just songs that can either pick me up when I down or if I need a good cry to relieve some built up stress. I would say these are my go-to’s. From the Ground Up - Dan & Shay : The music video represents a young couple who get married and try to follow in the footsteps of their grandparents’ love. This song really just makes me so excited and genuinely happy inside. Like any girl, I’ve been looking forward to my wedding day since I was little. The lyrics just represent a love so strong that it feels like you’re experiencing it with the song quietly playing in the background. It fills me with such joy and even makes me shed a tear every now and then. It just really gives me so much hope and fills me with so much excitement for the day that I get married.

All I Ask - Adele (John Saga Cover): This song is originally by Adele, but she has yet to release it to the public aside from on her album so I found this amazing cover that I have fallen in love with. When you listen to the lyrics, you really learn to take a second and stop and listen. It teaches you to slow down and enjoy the small things and people in your life because they could be gone tomorrow. It kind of speaks to you, shouting “Go after who you love! Don’t let them slip away!” It’s a subtle melody, yet has so much raw strength and passion. 

Humble and Kind - Tim Graw: It’s been a while since I’ve heard a country song such as this one that is so peaceful and true. The message is clear because of the title, but Tim’s lyrics just feel so calming whenever I listen to this song. It reminds you to be the best person you can be despite how others may treat you. The chorus basically teaches good manners if someone doesn’t know them already. I love this song so much because its honest and real. It’s like Tim is speaking to you personally instead of just listening to an ordinary song. 

Doubt - Mary J. Blidge: Now, this song is definitely a good “pick-me-up” song whenever I’m feeling pretty low on self-confidence. The lyrics express Mary’s journey and how far she has come because she realized she had to stop doubting herself. The beat, especially, combined with the lyrics just make you feel so strong and fearless, which really gives you the boost you need to try and have more courage. 

Stilettos - Kelsea Ballerini: This song is another good one to listen to in a sad mood. The main lyric says: 

“I wear my pain like stilettos. As bad as it may hurt, no, you’ll never know”

Despite how bad of a day I may be having, or how crappy I may feel about myself in the moment, this song teaches me to just suck it up and put on a smile, even if its fake. No one ever wants others to see them vulnerable. Everyone wants to be strong-willed and confident. Confidence is sexy, no? Sometimes, you just need to let your guard down and that’s what I do every time I listen to this song. I realize that things aren’t perfect and neither am I, but I refuse to let others see that. Everyone has his/her own story and I feel like these lyrics can apply to anyone in any situation. 

As listeners of music, it’s very hard to try and understand what artists themselves experience and/or suffer with within the music industry. All we can see is the fame and fortune and all the insanely incredible opportunities. One can only assume that trying to keep up a certain appearance as an artist can most certainly becoming tiring. As an artist, you have to make sure you always look your best, sound the best, make an appearance at all major events, do interviews, constantly being followed by cameras... It’s never ending. The sad part is most artists succumb to whomever their record label tells them to be. Not everyone has the guts to turn around and say “No. I want to be myself and if that’s not good enough for you, I quit.” 

One artist that I’ve recently started listening to again is the man himself, J. Cole.  #COLEWORLD, ya feel? ANYWAYS... An inspiring song by J. Cole called, “Crooked Smile”, came off his album, Born Sinner, back in 2013. This track actually take a shot at several different controversies in today’s world. Appearance, inequality, diversity, confidence... Society just hypes up having to constantly look appealing. In reality, natural beauty and confidence are when a person can truly feel best about themselves and comfortable in their own skin. 

Cole talks about how he, himself, has imperfect teeth, but despite how many people have complained about him smile, he comes back and says, 

“They tell me I should fix my grill cause I got money now I ain't gon' sit around and front like I ain't thought about it A perfect smile is more appealing but it's funny how My shit is crooked look at how far I done got without it I keep my twisted grill, just to show the kids it's real” 

As an artist, he has enough confidence in himself to know and come to terms with his imperfections and flaws, even though society may throw out its two cents at him about it. He doesn’t give a shit and that makes him not only a real artist, but a real person. So for the first half of the song, Cole talks about himself, but then midway he spins worlds. The most impressive part is how Cole manages to look into the world of a female and wonders how she manages to keep up with all the poor influences society allows. 

A personal favorite phrase from the song goes like: 

“Love yourself, girl, or nobody will Though you're a woman, I don't know how you deal With all the pressure to look impressive and go out in heels; I feel for you Killing yourself to find a man that'll kill for you You wake up, put makeup on, stare in the mirror But it's clear that you can't face what's wrong; no need to fix What God already put his paint brush on”

He is trying to personally connect with female’s who constantly feel insecure about themselves and who strive to always looks their best, meanwhile, exhausting themselves at the same time. The beauty that God gave you is all you need and if a man can’t love you for what you’ve been blessed with, then you need to kick that man to the curb and find a new one. It’s as simple as that. No one should ever feel unloved or less attractive just because someone else is too blind to see the true beauty in front of them.  

By the time the third verse comes around, Cole straight up calls out society as a whole. Living in such a fabricated world, it’s hard to feel comfortable if you’re not living up to everyone else’s expectations. He talks about how diverse the world is, yet people have yet to understand and accept that. Until they do that, people have a certain social classes/races will continue to go to jail and do undeserved time or take part in unfortunate situations. Cole raps, 

“Look at the nation, that's a crooked smile braces couldn't even straighten...Cause we in hell already - I ask if my skin pale Would I then sell like Eminem or Adele?” 

As a member of the dark-skinned community, Cole calls out the music industry in questioning his album sales if indeed he was white instead.

In this article from MTV, J. Cole apparently dedicated this song and his music video to a seven year girl who was shot in her own home during a police raid. Basically, stating the injustice and inequality in America has become so out of control and that should never happen to another soul. It really makes you think how messed up this world is.

Overall, as a nation, Cole’s expressing that we need to get our shit together. Stop separating races and accept diversity. Stop trying to look like a model and accept your natural beauty. Stop settling for people who only like you for your money and go find some real friends who enjoy just your company. Stop sacrificing everything for people just to get nothing in return. 

Focus on yourself and become confident in your own skin. 

YouTube sensation, Tori Kelly, is now becoming a worldwide phenomenon that everyone is gravitating towards. This newly known singer was first introduced to the world when she auditioned for American Idol in 2010, where Simon Cowell turned her down and claimed her voice to be annoying.

Tori eventually was sent home during the competition, but it’s a personal belief that Tori’s first album as a signed artist, “Unbreakable Smile”, involves the journey she has traveled all thanks to Simon rejecting her. 

The second track on the album, Unbreaksmile Smile, really represents Tori’s album as a whole. The song reflects Tori’s attitude towards those who dislike her/her music and her confidence in herself. 

Overall, the album revolves around Tori herself as a person and her experiences with relationships and life itself. Many of her songs mention her wanting to stay away from the fame and fortune that could cause her to change who she is. In her song, “Anyway”, the fourteenth track, she sings, 

“Inspiration's what I'm chasin' And take it or leave it babe I'm not gonna change If you don't understand I don't need you anyway”

Honestly, depending on the listener, Tori could be talking about many things--relationships or her record label. Personally, I feel it’s more of a bullet towards her record label. She stating that she’s not going to change despite whatever they may want her to do to make her more famous. It sounds like Tori could care less about the fame and more about remaining her true self in order to give her fans music she truly believes in. 

On iTunes, “Unbreakable Smile” has been rated 4.5 stars out of 5 and Tori is currently nominated for her very first Grammy for Best New Artist of 2016.

Her biggest singles so far from this album include, “Nobody Love” and “Shoulda Been Us”. 

For naming the album after the track “Unbreakable Smile”, one would think the artist would release that as one of the main singles, but Tori obviously did not. A favorited line from this track is a very bold one: 

“Just a California girl with big dreams Thinking maybe they’ll let me sing songs about real things And baby who knows maybe I can sell out shows without taking off my clothes God made me sexy I don't care if only I know”

Tori really expresses herself throughout this entire album, enforcing how she won’t let her label change her, in hopes that people will like her music because of the soul she puts into it without having to sexualize herself to the public eye at the same time. She seems incredibly confident and sure of the person she is and how she wants her messages within her music to come across with her listeners. 

I, myself, have watched Tori Kelly every since before she became a huge star within the YouTube world and knowing how far she’s come, I can truly say how incredibly passionate and fearless she was in creating this album. Every single track presents a new and bolder side of her edgy character, yet still manages to tell a story at the same time. She’s the girl trying to make it in the fame world without being tempted by the materialistic baggage that could weigh her down and disappoint her fans. 

Let’s be honest here... Country music is definitely not the most loved genre of today’s generation. Despite the majority of those who more or less hate it, you would surprised the amount of those who love it, especially here in New Jersey alone. It’s a personal belief that country music is a highly underrated genre. Most people make the assumption that the songs only revolve around beer, trucks and girls. Though a lot of artists may incorporate those subjects into their songs because they believe the song will sell better, country music was originally all about telling an incredible story within the short time of three minutes and forty-five seconds.

As recent as 2012, country made it to the most popular music genre according to this article on Music Genres List. 

If you couldn’t already guess, personally, country music is favorited over any other genre. Growing up as a little girl, singing has always been a great passion of mine and there are SO many people to look up to and whom I’ve always wished to follow in their footsteps. Anyone from Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire or Dolly Parton to more recent artists like Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. All of these women have become such an influential part towards my passion for creating music myself. 

Country Music Television, also known as CMT, posted an article of the “Top 40 All-Time Artists”, which included Loretta, Reba, Dolly, Miranda AND Carrie.  

These women represent the grounded roots of where country originated, from their melodies, lyrics and even the way their music videos represent their songs. 

The famous American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood released a elegantly written song in 2010, called “Temporary Home”. This first verse involves a young boy who has bounced around from home to home, with no stable or permanent environment. His positive attitude shines through as he knows that he will eventually find a nice place to call his true home. The second verse is about a young single mom who is suffering from unemployment while living in a half-way home. She prays to be able to find a home that her little girl can grow up in and feel security. The last verse entails a very ill, old man in the hospital who explains to his family that he will be safe in heaven. Carrie sings in his verse, “I will see you all someday. He looks up and says, ‘I can see God’s face’”.

Here you can check out another beautifully written story within Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me”. The title is pretty self-explanatory, no? Miranda sings about asking a woman, who lives in the house she once lived in, if she would be able to go inside and reminisce about how much that house created the person she had become. She realizes how much she has lost herself in the real world and thought all of the pain and suffering she felt would disappear if she could travel back to the place when times were much simpler. 

Hopefully after listening to just those two songs, you were able to get a better sense of what true country music consists of. It’s not just drunk men in bars who are trying to pick up the hottest girl. It’s about a story with meaning that anyone who listens to can immediately relate to in some way or another.
