you complete and utter nitwit, whelks ABSOLUTELY have tongues, they are called radula and are covered in thousands of tiny teeth, here is a cross section

so basically you look like an utter nincompoop. have a whelk, fool

you know conch shells? the fancy smooth ones? whelks are their less fancy, but far sexier cousin. they’re both a type of sea snail (and mollusk). you’ve probably seen whelk shells before:

i say sexier, because while conches are herbivores, whelks are carnivorous atrocities. i’m in love with them. conches are content with algea & plants. whelks took one look at crustaceans and other mollusks and said “THAT. I WANT TO EAT THAT.”

these bastards literally drill holes through other creature’s shells to get to the soft gooey slippery deliciousness inside. these knuckleheads will pry open clams using the edge of their shell and their foot (that’s right, whelks have a muscular foot). sometimes they damage their own damn shells doing this. you know, like a bitch who is done caring.

also, when tiny whelks hatch in their egg casing they tend to eat their siblings, born & unborn. but that’s… not really uncommon in the animal kingdom so i’m not gonna give them extra grief. i’ve got siblings, those relationships can be hard. 

(yes that monstrosity is the egg casing. no i don’t want to talk about it)

i’ve never eaten a whelk but i will one day, i’m told they make good chowder
