there was no need 4 pansexuality as a label when it was created - it was only created bc of ppls biphobic n transphobic belief that bisexuality didnt include trans n nonbinary ppl. n there is still no need 4 pansexuality now - bc it still isnt actually a different sexuality frm bisexuality.

so every single definition of pansexuality has 2 fundamentally hinge on n base itself on trying 2 find some way in which it isnt just bisexuality, n thats always biphobic bc literally every definition of pansexuality is just a form of bisexuality or even just the literal definition of bisexuality - so the only thing pansexuals can do 2 justify the continued use of the label is try 2 redefine bisexuality negatively.

first of all calling yourself pansexual is not transphobic. that’s not something i’ve ever said so don’t put words in my mouth lmao. pansexuality exists, is valid, you’re allowed to be pan, etc etc

what IS transphobic AND biphobic however, is the rhetoric some pan people use to defend & celebrate their sexuality. there are a lot of posts floating around out there that make it seem like pansexuality is more open & accepting & progressive in comparison to the more “restricted” and “regressive” identity bisexuality. which really sucks & is biphobic + transphobic lmfao and i’ll talk about why

1) so first of all: “pan people are attracted to all genders, bi people are attracted to two genders.” no. this is completely WRONG. bisexuality has always been about attractions to genders like and unlike one’s own, which means it is not limited to two genders. the 1990 bisexual manifesto by the bay area bisexual network says:

“Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have “two” sides or that we must be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders…”

so like. saying that bi people are attracted to two genders reinforces the transphobic idea that only two binary genders exist (male and female) and/or makes it seem like those are the only two genders bi people are attracted to, thereby erasing bi people’s attraction to nonbinary genders. which makes it seem like bisexuality is exclusive of nb people & transphobic & regressive in that sense. which is hilarious considering the purple stripe on the bi flag literally represents nb people.

2) as an extension of the previous point, i’ve even seen people act like bisexuality means being attracted solely to men and women while pansexuality means being attracted to “men, women, and trans & nb people.” again, this notion erases bi people’s attraction to nb people AND makes it seem like trans men & women are different genders than this cis counterparts which is gross as FUCK. trans men and women are just……..men and women, so i don’t understand why they’re relegated to another category when defining pansexuality. transphobic & biphobic again

3) “hearts not parts” is often used to define pansexuality as opposed to bisexuality, and that’s also a really gross thing to say lmao. this neat lil catchphrase is transphobic in that it equates “parts” or genitalia with genders since we’re talking about attraction to different genders here. besides that, it’s biphobic because think about it……it implies that bi people view their partners as sex objects and/or are attracted to people for their “parts” which is……wtf? meanwhile it implies that pan people, who are attracted to “hearts,” are attracted to people romantically and are more considerate and purely loving than bi people because “we only care about what’s on the inside !! not your “parts” unlike those bis !” i don’t think i have to explain further lmao

4) “bi people are attracted to people of different genders, pan people are attracted to people regardless of gender” - this means the same thing, so i genuinely don’t understand why it’s used to define bisexuality vs. pansexuality so often

Pansexuality has been defined as “the sexual, romantic, or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity.” Coinciding with this in its early years pan people’s mantra was “Hearts not parts”, and although that mantra has fallen out of popularity since the conception of pansexuality pansexuals still often call themselves “genderblind”. Even just the wikipedia page is riddled with biphobia- seriously go look at it. This is not a coincidence, pansexuality was born from biphobia. 2. What’s wrong with “hearts not parts”? This saying implies that every other sexuality focused solely on genitalia- which is gross and wrong. Furthermore since pansexuality is a direct schism from bisexuality which many pansexuals incorrectly see as “attraction to men and women” this mantra is most likely intended to be a jab at an incorrect assumption on what bisexuality means. 3. So what? How is it biphobic? Pansexuality is biphobic because bisexuality (defined as attraction to same and other genders) already intrinsically includes attraction to anyone regardless of gender. This is important because the creation of pansexuality is rooted in the idea that “bi = 2 therefore attraction to men and women” this is grossly incorrect and ahistorical. The 1990 bisexual manifesto everything that moves (which same out at least a decade before the conception of pansexuality) states several times that it’s wrong to assume that there are only two genders. Bisexuals have ALWAYS been pushing the gender binary boundaries. And also we need to focus on how the pan label affects bisexuals- and it’s very hard to deny that it’s never hurt us. 4. Even the flag is biphobic. If you take a look at the pan flag you’ll notice its a more saturated recolor of the bi flag. This in itself is alright however the meanings of the pan flag stripes is a butchered nb fetishistic “version” of what the bi flag means. (For clarification the pan flag is: pink stripe = attraction to women, blue stripe = attraction to men and yellow stripe = attraction to nb genders, the fact that pansexuality is a schism of bisexuality clearly means that whatever pan person made the pan flag thought the bi flag meant: pink stripe = attraction to women, blue stripe = attraction to men and purple stripe = attraction to both when that’s just not the case.)
