We all absolute love Pink Diamond. We were always huge fans of the ‘Pink as a spoiled, entitled child’ theory, so we’re super excited to see what impact this will have in canon.

However, we do have certain disagreements with the idea of her being the ‘Charles the II’ of the Diamond Authority, and a lot of the ways fandom has been interpreting her.

1) We’re still not entirely sold on the ‘Pink was an off color’ theory. Her size in the dream could have just been… well, dream logic, and reflecting how she felt emotionally. That said, we do think there is other evidence supporting it (window and throne sizes), and are excited by the story prospects if she was. We just haven’t 100% accepted it.

2) Even if she was off color size-wise, the implication that her size caused her to be ‘less mature’ (or even mentally disabled, as we’ve some people have suggested), really doesn’t sit great with us.

Pink’s personality was clearly modeled after a young child. Obviously, childhood isn’t a concept for Gem, who come out of the ground as functional adults. But they can still be less experienced and mature in human terms (see Amethyst in the Greg flashbacks), and Pink’s behavior was probably a simple combination of that, and being practically worshiped as A Perfect Amazing Being as soon as she came out of the ground.

3) We really don’t think Yellow Diamond hated Pink.

It’s a possibility, admittedly. We’re all extrapolating off of very little evidence. 

But the main thing we consider is: what metaphor did Stevonnie’s powers choose to filter Pink’s memories through? The relationship between Priyanka and Connie.

Priyanka doesn’t hate Connie. Priyanka loves her. She can just kind of suck at expressing that love. She’s a busy woman, who deals with a lot of responsibilities. She’s strict, has high standards, and is very over protective. 

Which suggests that Yellow Diamond and Pink Diamond’s relationships were better. Yellow was an older, experienced leader, dealing with a little kid, and who didn’t understand why she couldn’t just behave. But hate her? Have her shattered? Doesn’t seem likely to us.

4) Was Pink hated for being an off color?

If Pink was defective, it wouldn’t be surprised if there was ableism directed at her from her fellow Diamonds. But that ableism would have been filtered through the class system.

A rutile or sapphire who comes out off color? Has to run and hide in an abandoned Kindergarten her whole life. A Diamond who comes out off color? Still accepted as a member of the Diamond Authority, even if she was coddled a bit, and eventually given her own entire planet. 

If a peridot or ruby interfered with her supervisor’s equipment, and then started screaming at her? Probably a steep punishment indeed, from whippings to shatterings. Pink, though? She gets gently placed elsewhere, and then scolded once.

5) Yellow Diamond was kind of right about Pink’s behaviour.

A lot of criticism has been thrown at Yellow for being mean to Pink for how she treated her, not giving her any armies or planets (weirdly enough, little criticism for casually threatening to have underlings shattered. Funny.) And yeah, it was pretty harsh and cruel of a way to talk to what’s essentially your child. 

But let’s lay aside the vileness of the subject matter they were discussing, and look at a human metaphor. There’s a mom who’s a politician, and is extremely busy with extremely important work: balancing the budget, organizing trade, making deals, communicating with the army.

Then her kid comes in. Keeps poking around and trying to get attention when it’s Work Time. Starts poking randomly at the computer. Asks why she can’t lead the meetings. The mom basically says that the child will need to be more responsible to do that. In response, the child starts screaming about how she wants a pony.

The Diamonds see themselves as leaders. The rulers, the guiders, the defenders of their people. That’s responsibility. And Pink didn’t exhibit any inkling of that. All she wanted in this flashback was recognition, to be treated seriously, to have her stuff, NOW!

has anyone considered that if pink diamond is a fusion maybe rose quartz didn't shatter her but instead poofed her and to everyone else, it looked like a shatter? rose’s sword was made for fair combat, but any weapon could easily split a gem if it were hit in the correct spot. if she was poofed, it would look like a shatter because there are two pieces right?? 

Hang on: in Too Far, Peridot said “Well yeah, you’re small” when Amethyst asked if she was defective. So doesn’t that mean that yes, if you’re smaller than you should be, you are considered defective?

i think that’s because she’s a quartz. she’s defective for a quartz. “broad-shouldered, intimidating” is a part of the Quartz Brand ™. it’s part of their job - as guards, soldiers, police, whathaveyou.

but while size is intimidating, as far as muscle goes, it does not necessarily mean status across every type of gem. sapphire is a rare, aristocratic gem, and also tiny. being defective is related to your purpose - padparadscha is defective because she can’t see the future. she looks about the same, size-wise. seeing what just happened isn’t very useful, at least not compared to sapphire.

on the flipside, take the other amethysts in famethyst - there IS size variation among them, and that doesn’t make them defective! even as quartzes, you need a huge size + strength difference - like with amethyst, carnelian or skinny - to be considered all-out defective. and that’s when you’re a quartz, where size + strength DOES matter. 

back to the diamonds - i don’t see why size would matter there. there are different ways to be a leader, and the diamonds’ strengths so far are more “magical” than physical. even without inherent authority, they have powers - shooting pure energy, projecting emotion, ect. 

you clearly don’t need physical strength to be a diamond.

my personal view is that the crewniverse is using shorthand here. being shorter = being younger, less authoritative, ect. it seems yellow hopes pink will learn to be a proper diamond one day, which i don’t think would be the case if she had a serious defect which hindered that. 

people act like yellow is lying to pink, but… next to the fact that yellow is a terrible liar, she did give pink a colony. earth. it was kind of a big deal.

For a long time we believed that the diamond “sign” is look(ed) like this because of the diamond’s gemplaces (White Diamond - forehead, Blue and Yellow Diamond - chest, Pink - belly)

And it’s totally right… It’s true

But what if…

It was about their size? (Too)
