i really relate to that character in a way i cant explain in words. put her in the eternal torture chamber now please
The hiatus is upon us. This was less than 24 hours after the RWBY Season 9 finale.
At last! With Volume 10 being Greenlit on July 4th?
We’re FINALLY going to get an answer!
Highlights included:
"and then I, kind of, died, and then an about nine-foot tall woman showed me a vision of where my mother and sisters mother shared their side of my tragic backstory"
"while me, weiss, and jaune were following a cat through a stormy path, yang and blake made out"
"we kidnapped a baby talking mouse"
"we did drugs, and it was really annoying"
"neo killed the talking mouse"
"neo died, kind of"
"i came back to life"
"the sentient paper stars died"
"the mouse came back to life"
"i formed a new hatred for chess"
My forever headcanon is that the reason Ruby is Like That is because after Summer left and Tai shut down and Yang had to grow up too quickly, Ruby kind of slotted into this role of "child that needed to be ok for things to function."
As in, Ruby learned very quickly that if the food was a little burnt and Yang was on the verge of tears because of it, she chokes it down with a smile on her face. Or Tai forgot to get groceries again and they have to order the same takeout food for the third time even if she's sick of it, she picks around to make it look like she's eating a lot and tells her dad it's ok. Or she had to stay at school for an extra hour because both of them were too busy to pick her up right away, she stays on the steps doodling in her notebook and waiting patiently.
Tai needed to heal and get his shit together, Yang needed to be everything Tai wasn't being and try and be herself at the same time, and Ruby needed to be ok. Because if she wasn't then the other two might just break even worse. So she grits her teeth and she swallows her complaints and she tries so hard to be good and not add to the stress.
And after everything was finally beginning to heal, when she was old enough to care for herself and Tai was functioning like an adult again, she just never knew when to stop.

So here's an odd little RWBY headcanon I've actually had for a while:
Obviously, Yang has been and always will be Team RWBY's designated driver. Whether on Bumblebee or any kind of car or truck, if Team RWBY is using any kind of land vehicle, Yang WILL be the one behind the wheel.
However, while Yang might be the designated driver, if/when Team RWBY gets their hands on an aircraft (or maybe spacecraft...) to use, I like the idea of Ruby being the team's PILOT.
Why exactly? A few reasons, most of them vibe-based.
Ruby's always been the most aerial-focused of her team when it comes to mobility, not counting Weiss's summon-mounts, so she feels like the one most comfortable moving in three-dimensions.
Also we have a bit of a precedent set for this with Maria, a fellow silver-eyed-warrior being the group's pilot in Volumes 6-8, so it could be fun to see Ruby follow in those footsteps. Not to mention there's a trope of ace-pilots having keen eyes, so Ruby's whole thing with her own Silver Eyes could symbolically play into that.
It also gives Ruby something to nice distinguish herself from Yang.
Finally I've always felt like if anyone on Team RWBY would be a mech-pilot, it would DEFINITELY be Ruby, so this is something of an offshoot of that.
Finally... I dunno, it just kind of fits Ruby, you know? Ruby pulling sick aerial maneuvers in an aircraft/spaceship/mecha, clearly having the time of her life...
...all while her teammates are holding on for dear life and/or using a barf-bag XD
Completely agree with Yang as the driver and Ruby as the pilot, but I do have a specific vision in mind for the former job: namely, despite being too young/unlicensed and therefore it being technically illegal, Ruby can absolutely drive.
But like. Ruby learned to drive either from Qrow trying to be the cool uncle or Yang going “this is a valuable life skill to have, especially once I’m at Beacon and you’ll have to commute to Signal yourself—” only to bite her tongue when Ruby slams on the gas with the car still in reverse. Either way, she learned in a very rural area where the biggest roadkill risks were Grimm and therefore more of a target than something to avoid.
Ruby can, technically, drive. But Yang is the group driver, because Ruby drives like she’s playing Death Race (the video game). Slamming on the gas and brakes, absolutely never remembers to signal, regularly rides off the road because she mostly practiced on dirt ones anyway and sometimes it’s hard to notice.
However, absolutely no one knows that Ruby can drive, much less that she makes drag racing look tame when she does so. Because there’s rarely a need for anyone to drive, and when there is Yang does it.
The one exception is Nora, who got to go on a joyride with Ruby during the days of Team RNJR and enjoyed herself immensely.
Its implied that Amir has done the jazz cabbage in the past. He would not be able to handle weed from the future
Fresh gossip (x)
Between the show and various side projects, I feel like there's probably enough moments supporting a headcanon that Ruby tends to just. take Weiss's stuff. and not necessarily asking first
and i actually think this is a general thing with Ruby. if she likes you, she will be taking your stuff without asking. the more she likes you the more stuff she'll take. Yang explains this to Blake at some point after Ruby takes something of Blake's, and right as Yang says that second bit Ruby walks by with a comically absurd amount of Weiss's things
Weiss, understandably, would not be happy about this at first. I feel like, at some point maybe between Volumes 2 and 3, they'd have a conversation about boundaries and stuff and where the line is between "things of Weiss's that Ruby can just take without asking" and "things of Weiss's that Ruby really should ask about first"... and even though Weiss is the one drawing that line and if she told Ruby to stop taking her stuff at all Ruby would definitely respect that, the line ends up being almost exactly where it would have been if Ruby had drawn it
Before that conversation happens though, I can imagine - during late Volume 1/most of Volume 2 -
An escalatingly absurd series of attempts by Weiss to stop Ruby from taking her stuff (she has not yet had the idea to just talk to Ruby about it)
Weiss trying to get revenge by taking Ruby's stuff and seeing how she likes it, which backfires because not only does Ruby not have a problem with it at all, she saw Weiss wearing her cape and told Weiss she looks cute and now Weiss's face is the exact same shade of red as that cape
I know that "Ruby's eyes glow in the dark" is a fairly popular headcanon, but I like to think that the silver eyes also come with some other, less eye-related, weird things. Most of them far less dramatic than zapping Grimm, just noticeably weird things like:
Ruby is slightly magnetic, so sometimes metal objects just stick to her
Ruby has a higher-than-average risk of accidentally setting off a metal detector. It's not a sure thing, but it has happened before
Ruby conducts electricity better than most people (this is not the same as Nora's Semblance, which absorbs electricity). Basically, when she gets zapped, more of the zap passes through her than it would through a typical non-silver-eyed person
One time, she gets hit by a flashbang and for a few seconds, her veins turn black
Ruby's rose petals taste metallic. Don't ask Weiss how she knows that
Other people with silver eyes (*cough* Maria *cough*) would also have those quirks (except for the petal thing)
