He glanced down at the lineup of samples before looking back at Nell, a grin creeping across his face. "Oh, so that's the catch. Free beer in exchange for having opinions." She had said that to begin with but it was nice to know that was all there was to this. "Company's definitely nice. Not just because you said you'd look out for me and all." Resting an elbow on the bar, he continued. "Honestly, that's kinda cool. Most places hand you a drink and hope for the best. You actually want thoughts and stuff." He nodded, confirming, "Yeah, I'm in! Though I gotta say, I'm not like...a connoisseur or whatever those people are called. I can tell you if I like it but nothing complicated?"
"Any opinion is welcome, by the way," said Nell. She would be disappointed if a sample tasted like crap, yet all the more determined to succeed. She couldn't give up, not now or ever. "Don't be coy, okay? You won't get penalized if you hate one—or all—of them."
Her eyes flicked briefly to the group he started the night off with. They could use another round. She motioned to Joe to go take care of it. "Mr. Lonelyheart, huh? What gives?"
"I don't see a lot of connoisseurs around here," Nell admitted, "even during Oktoberfest." That was the last thing she needed. A respectful customer was one thing, but a mansplaining know-it-all was quite another. Nell was usually able to get the worst of them on the Wall of Shame, where the social miasma among the regulars would finish the job.
"So," she declared, offering the menu again, "what's up first, Home Rule or Wolf It Down?"
