OOC Announcement:
From this point onward Ashe will be in a planned ship with @bluegliez :D
What will this mean?
Part of his character development will go towards this romantic subplot :)
As a result, any more romantic or flirty interactions with Ashe through ask memes and such will be treated as strictly non-canon.
Any posts dedicated towards this ship will be appropriately tagged with #(Caspar & Ashe).
Summer Idol āļø
(Caspar & Ashe, Any+ prompt or: when a magic orb takes you to beach land)
āCaspar? Where are you? Caspaaar!ā Ashe shouts out, looking over the white beach and blue ocean that stretches out before him. In his hands are two ice cream cones, purchased from a nearby vendor. It still feels a little bit unreal, being at a beautiful resort like this⦠and the way they got here sure doesnāt help with the dream-like feeling.
What started as a normal shopping trip a few days ago ended up with them winning a trip to a tropical resort after being a magic shopās 39,3939th customer (honestly, Ashe still isnāt sure what the relevance of that number is). After making sure they werenāt needed for the weekend the two boys decided to accept the invitation. They traveled not by carriage however, but by⦠orb? Itās probably more magic, if Ashe had to guess.
Nevertheless the resort ended up being very real. Pristine beaches, clear oceans, guests lounging in comfortable chairs under parasols, cold drinks and ice cream being served.. On top of that they even received complimentary swimsuits! It feels like something right out of a fairytale! And Ashe definitely read a few of those, like the tale of the coconut princess!
With his friend in charge of finding a place to put their belongings, Ashe is in charge of getting them refreshments. Hence the current situation, with the only problem now being⦠where is Caspar? Surely teal hair and red shorts arenāt that hard to spot, right?
āCaspar!ā He shouts again, trying to ignore the way slight embarrassment creeps up when he draws the stares of a few beachgoers who definitely look more at home than he does.

āUm. Huh?ā Heās left slightly dumbstruck for a moment. While asking about bow fishing seemed to be leading up to trying the activity together, he didnāt expect that to be right away.
ā¦yet, he doesnāt hate it at all. If anything the idea of spending a little one on one time with his professor seems more enjoyable than anything else he mightāve planned for today. āR-Right away, Professor!ā Quickly he stuffs everything that remains in his desk into his bag and stands up excitedly.
As they walk side by side, Ashe keeps making curious little glances at Professor Byleth whenever he feels like the man isnāt looking. The way he walks, the way he bears himself.. all of it seems so calm and collected, just like he imagined an experienced mercenary would be. āIf you donāt mind me asking, what brought this on Professor? If thereās something you feel Iām falling behind on, Iāll do my best to catch up.ā
He knows well enough that heās just some crestless nobody, meaning he has to work twice- no, thrice as hard to catch up to his noble-blooded peers.
"I think you're doing good." How much his opinion on that counts for, he's not sure. He may be a professor, but all of it is new to him. The best metric he has is previous archers in the company. Comparing them, he wonders if he's right in thinking Ashe more careful with his life.
The walk out to the pond isn't far. He considers going further, to the river where there are more obstacles and variables, but this is a better start. The next time, he thinks, they will go there. "You've been working hard and getting far, it's not easy to keep up with everyone, but you do."
He readies the line as the end of the arrow. The hardest part of this kind of fishing is the line either being too heavy and taut or too fragile. "So as a professor, I would like to help you soar as high as you want to go."
āY-You really think so?ā Heās expecting an analysis, one that implies heās got something heās falling behind on. Instead what he gets is praise, and for a moment the boy forgets what to do with himself, a deep pink blush spreading across pale freckled cheeks. The professor might not realize it, but those words meant the world to him. āWell I.. I donāt think Iād have made it this far if it wasnāt for your guidance, professor.ā His head lowers slightly, as if heās trying to hide his face in the fabric of his hood.
āI still have so far left to go, but I think I can make it with your help. So.. thank you.ā And thatās about as much sheepishness he can handle. Any more and he might spontaneously combust! āA-Anyway, this pond seems clear enough. Iāll do my best to catch a few fish!ā
With that he starts readying his own bow, his stance practiced and comfortable. The line slightly adjusts the arrowās weight and feel in his hand, but the archer is relatively quick to intuitively adjust his hand position to account for it.

It's a different world, that much he can certainly agree with. Sitting at the eaves and being expected to partake made large enough a difference that still Byleth found himself falling into old habits of minimized presence. "I don't see it being the last."
At the question he nods. "Two birds with one stone." He picks up his own bow and holds it out. He's done this kind of fishing before but it's not as fun as a proper rod and a pier. This too is a means of teaching. "The distortions from the water can make it difficult to aim, so this will help you there." As well as simply being a new experience.
"Let's go then," he says from the class' door. And, "We can talk more about the ball on our way there." Though Byleth has little to add from himself.

He knows well enough that heās just some crestless nobody, meaning he has to work twice- no, thrice as hard to catch up to his noble-blooded peers.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āDid you enjoy the ball this year?ā Though class has ended, he finds himself turning to speak to one of the remaining students within it. His own experience with the event had spurred more curiosity about what other people did than any real personal emotions.
Ā Ā Ā Why is he setting a freshly strung bow in front of Asheās desk as he inquires? The answer to that comes in the second bow set down alongside it. āHave you heard of bow fishing?ā
For a moment Ashe perks up as Professor Byleth addresses him. Heās still in the middle of packing up, being a little slower than his classmates in copying notes from the board. āI definitely did, Professor!ā He answers with a warm smile, shoulders relaxing as he realizes the professor just wants to talk. āSometimes I still wonder if it wasnāt all just a dream. I had so much fun, itās a little hard to imagine all that to be real for someone like me.ā
Green eyes glance downward as he hears wood clang against wood. The professor put two bows on his desk. Ashe is about to ask why, when Professor Byleth himself gives a question that, in turn, answers his. āBow fishing?ā The student ponders for a moment. āI think so? Iāve read a few books in the library about the subject, but Iāve never actually tried it for myself.ā
Curiously he cocks his head slightly sideways, looking into those calm blue eyes that at first seemed a little intimidating, but now seems comforting more than anything else. And it hits him. āOh! Are you interested in giving it a try, Professor?ā

āOh, are you sure? Really, itās no problem at all!ā Itās too bad, really. Good food is one of the best ways to bond with someone, his mother used to say. āThe next cleaning shift wonāt be until after dinner, though. And if the dinner shift has to spend time getting the kitchen in order first, it might cause the food to come out late.ā Last time that happened, things got rather messy to say the least. āI should help out a little bit, just getting the dishes washed will save them some time.ā
Walking closer to the basin, it somehow looks even worse. āBut geez, couldnāt those guys have cleaned up after themselvesā¦?ā He laughs with a slightly frustrated tone. āI know a few of them from my class. I guess when youāre not used to doing these kinds of things it might not even come to mind.ā From what he remembers theyāre minor kingdom nobles. He canāt exactly blame them for being unfamiliar with tasks like these⦠even if itās a little annoying.
Innes does not want to touch it. He can't. Every time he thinks of his hands touching mystery sludge, he feels bile rise to the back of his throat. Ashe guides them closer, and Innes worries his face may be as green as his hair.
He looks elsewhere, and pretends he can't smell the putrid dishes.
"Some people are lazy, or selfish." Innes is in no place to talk, when he can't even stomach looking at the plates. "There are nobles who have lived nothing but comfortable lives, and have never had to fight a war and help with chores around camp."
Innes is not above helping, of course he isn't - everything is an opportunity to shine. This is not that.
āIām sure being a noble has its own responsibilities too, ones a commoner like me canāt even imagine.ā Heās only ever really responsible for his own well being and that of the people around him. āI mean, a noble has so much to think about. Theyāre responsible not just for their immediate surroundings but entire towns, cities and nations.ā He wonders for a moment how much responsibility Innes must have. He doesnāt actually know much about the man beyond his obvious nobility.
While speaking, he allows the basin to fill up with water. Briefly Ashe stands there with a slightly furrowed brow, wondering how heās going to make this work with one hand. Eventually he decides to just go for it, pulling out one dish at a time and then awkwardly scrubbing it. āSorry, by the way. I wanted to make you something to eat and instead Iām just making you stand there. I promise Iāll make it up to you.ā

āI love to cook, personally! Itās something Iāve done ever since I was little. So if you can describe your tastes to me I can probably think of something.ā Okay, this seems like progress! Innes wants something simple and home-made. Immediately his mind jumps to soups and stews that can be done in 30 minutes. Or perhaps a well filled sandwich will be more his thing?
While still holding hands, Ashe leads Innes to the dining hall with a notable pep in his step. When they arrive at the kitchen, they pass by a group of teenage boys, both taller and older looking than Ashe, laughing amongst themselves. Seems like they used the kitchen before them?
It would definitely explain the sight that awaits them, as the kitchen is nothing short of a disaster with utensils and unwashed pans everywhere. āOh.ā Ashe voices, softly.
Thankfully he recovers quickly from the surprise. āI should probably clean first before we can get to cooking. Iām sorry, would you mind lending a hand?ā Heād really prefer not making Innes help, but theyāre not allowed to let go of each other.
Innes looks at the state of the mess. It's no problem, they can return once the cleaners have been.
That isn't what Ashe suggests. Innes looks at the pile of dishes, covered in unidentified foodstuff. He imagines touching it, and his skin crawls. His stomach turns. He can't imagine it. Instinctively, his left hand pulls back.
"I could always wait until dinner," Innes says, uneasy. "There is no training today, I have no need of a snack."
He can't do it. There are few things that Innes simply cannot do, but this is one of them. He stands there, frozen. He can try many things, and will excel at them, but this is something that his body rejects entirely.
āOh, are you sure? Really, itās no problem at all!ā Itās too bad, really. Oh dear. Perhaps that wasnāt the best approach⦠āIām not implying anything like that. I donāt think youāre a ruffian at all. Think of it more like⦠ah, yes! A bonding exercise!ā Heās read plenty of stories before where friendship managed to sand down the more rugged edges of disagreeable heroes.
āI enjoyed our time together last time. I wouldnāt mind at all to spend a little more time with you.ā The younger archer says warmly, unfazed by the olderās prickliness. Honestly, a part of him is even a little curious as to what got Innes branded as a bad egg.
āIf you donāt have any ideas, I might have some. Do you have any kind of food in particular you enjoy? I donāt know how capable Iāll be with just one hand, but Iād be happy to whip up a snack for you.ā Just in case heās planned a few activities that takes them around the monastery, should Innes not have any. Itās good to be prepared, after all!
Oh, good. The school thinks he's both friendless and a ruffian. They send a child to befriend him. He wonders what would happen if he were to tumble from the tallest tower in shame.
No. Innes has survived far more than social suicide.
"Well, it has been a while since I've eaten something that wasn't mass-produced," Innes says thoughtfully. What he would truly like is a dish from home, but he doesn't expect his local boy to understand the intricacies of Frelian cuisine.
"I would be content with something simple. My skills in the kitchen are lacking, beyond the basics for survival." Innes does not want camp food - he wants real food.

Red and Blue, I love you!
(Deirdre and Ashe, making chocolates)
Dessert making was something Ashe had always enjoyed, just as much as making savory foods. So upon learning there was a chocolatier offering lessons on making your own chocolates naturally the boy was quick to sign up, the decadent sweet being one he never quite had the opportunity to master.
As his own chocolates finished chilling, the boy steadily pushed each one out of the mould. The treats were shaped like little hearts, filled with a jam on the inside. They were supposed to be friendship chocolates, something to show his classmates his appreciation for having gotten the chance to learn with them.
However, as the topic of love kept being brought up by both the chocolatier as well as his fellow students naturally his mind began to wander. To a certain person he found himself admiring more and more..
His initial decision to make regular squares changed into hearts. A commonly liked caramel filling became a more specific flavor of Albinean berry jam.
āI wonder if heād like theseā¦.ā The boy found himself wondering, before promptly shaking his head to get rid of the thoughts- as well as the slight reddish tint that threatened to blossom on his cheeks.
@nagaficat
"Do you mind if I join you?" Deirdre asks Ashe as she approaches the empty spot at his work station. There are other places she could work in the seminar but Ashe seems to be the only participant without anyone else near him. It is the season for the Day of Devotion and it does make her a bit sad to think that someone might be alone during a time of year dedicated towards spending time with others.
And this does make a lovely excuse to get to know him. He may not be one of her own Black Eagles students but that hardly matters.
"I have never made anything like this before. Everything I learned to make growing up had to be created with ingredients I grew or foraged myself. It will be exciting to try something new."
She leans in, a sly but knowing smile sliding across her lips. "And I am sure he will be overjoyed just to know you created something just for him."
āOh! Yes, of course!ā Ashe said with a smile, carefully moving his belongings to one end of the bench so that the unfamiliar lady could put her stuff on the other side. Working alone was fine, but it was always more fun to cook with someone else after all. āI just finished my first batch, but thereās enough ingredients left to make more.ā
Ashe then carefully listened to her speak as she explained her unfamiliarity with the lessonās topic. āYou grew your own food? Thatās amazing!ā The boy replied delightedly. āMy parents used to do the same thing. You can taste the love if you grow em yourself, they always said.ā He thought back to those times fondly. Times spent digging in their yard for fresh ingredients.
āBut Iād be happy to help with the chocolates! Iām not exactly a master, but I know my way around a kitchen.ā None of the equipment given to them had been unfamiliar. At most, their application took some getting used to, here and there.
But then she brought up him, and suddenly that red tint heād been trying so hard to hide came back in full force. āHuh?! N-No, these are⦠ahem, I made them for all my friends! Not just⦠one guy in particularā¦.ā At least that was the initial idea. But looking at the chocolate hearts staring back at him⦠yeah. Flustered his fingers went to the strings of his hoodie, lightly tugging on them as suddenly the room around them got a lot more interesting, eyes flitting about.
Deirdre is glad she chose this spot to work. This student seems sweet and she feels already as though they both must have at least some things in common. As she begins to examine the ingredients in front of her, she hopes even more opportunities will present themselves.
"Let us help each other then, hm?" The heart shapes he has chosen for his chocolates do not escape her. There were other molds available. Circles, squares, shapes more suited to all of his friends. But she does not judge and she does not tease. "I am hoping to make mine for someone special, too."
She realizes that she does not yet know this young man's name and quickly holds out her hand in greeting. He does not know hers either. "Oh but my manners! I am Deirdre, a professor with the Black Eagles."
āI-Itās a pleasure, Professor Deirdre!ā The boy sweetly smiled, taking her hand and giving it a polite shake. āMy name is Ashe. Iām a student of the Blue Lions.ā Something about her made Ashe feel at ease. Perhaps it was her kindly mannerisms, or the way she spoke. Either way, the boy was more than happy to work with her.
āIf the chocolates are for someone special, then.. do you have an idea for what kind of flavor you want to give them?ā He asked with a slight tilt of his head. Briefly, he wondered who this special person could be. Surely a lady like her would have a husband or wife, right? ā¦.would that be rude to ask?
āThereās plenty of fruit available for us to use. Thereās also flavorings like vanilla or cinnamon.. oh! And if your gift is for an adult, thereās even flavored liquors you can use. Though Iām not allowed to handle those ingredients, ahahaā¦ā The boy listed off the ingredients he recalled seeing, hoping that would be helpful in choosing a flavor.
"I was thinking I would make it into a game," Deirdre explains as she begins cutting the chocolate into smaller pieces to melt. With other groups farther along in the process, the whole room begins to smell like chocolate. It's delicious and even more reason why she wants to make something to share.
"I thought that if I tried to make each piece completely identical on the outside, I could fill each one with a different filling. That way, we could eat them together and it would be a surprise for us both." She grins and considers whether or not to try adding liquor to any of them. Lord Sigurd might enjoy it but what if they wanted to share with Seliph? It is still difficult to think of him as old as he is now.
"The difficult part will be ensuring that they are uniform so the surprise is not ruined for me but, with your help, I think I can do it.
The boyās eyes twinkle with wonder as Deirdre explained her idea. āThat sounds wonderful! Iād be more than happy to help!ā Making a game out of chocolates.. what a fun and novel idea! His mind immediately wanders to his brother and sister, both of them fond of such games. āWould you be okay with it if I copy your idea later? I think my younger siblings would love a game made from chocolates!ā
While the professor is chopping the chocolates, Ashe starts setting up the double boiler that will allow them to melt evenly. First and foremost, since he offered to help her thatāll be the priority. A happy little hum escapes from his lips whilst working.
Once everythingās ready, he glances at the woman next to him. āIf you donāt mind me asking.. will this be for your spouse, perhaps?ā He canāt help but be a little curious.

When asked if he could assist some of the Academyās more⦠unique personalities with adjusting to student life, Ashe, as always, is happy to help. What they did not tell him however is that that involves holding hands with that person for an uncertain amount of time.
And the second thing he has not been told, is that heās with the archer he met at the ball. Back then he didnāt seem all that disagreeable, just a bit.. erm. Whatās the nice way to say this⦠Overconfident?
āHuh? Troublemaker? Me?ā
ā¦.On top of that, it seems like Innes misunderstood their roles here, too. āOh! Um⦠I donāt know if thatās quite it, but I have been asked to spend the day with you.ā A slightly awkward, forced chuckle escaped his lips.
āSo.. what would you like to do for today?ā
"Hold a moment." Innes' feet plant themselves firmly on the ground. "What are you implying? Are you implying that I am some sort of ruffian?"
Involuntarily, his mind flashes back to the ball. To other adventures. He's no ruffian, but he's no saint, either. This hardly means that he ought to be punished. Is Rowan also being saddled with a wrangler? Oh gods, how terribly insulting.
Innes tries to cross his arms, but finds his hand anchored still to Ashe's. "What if I decided to behave like a ruffian, hm? What if I chose to cause a ruckus? What if that's what I want to do today?"

When Innes had been grabbed for this experience, he had wondered what sort of ruffian he would be paired with. The sort who would skip class? The dangerous sort who would hoist Innes along on misadventures? It was nothing he could not handle.
Except when he had been paired with Ashe, he was confused. Innes stared at his companion, his right hand gripping Ashe's left, and he could not comprehend.
"When we met at the ball, I hadn't thought you would be a troublemaker." Innes hummed. "However, you are nothing I cannot handle."

Sea Shanties with a mystery incorporated
āI overheard one of them mentioning a tavern being their next meetup spot. Maybe we can talk with them there.ā It was worth a shot at least, the boy believed. If thereās any way this conflict could be settled without any more aggression they should try to take that route.
They mightāve committed a crime. But going out of your way to not hurt anyone suggested that they werenāt cruel brigands. At that point they deserved to be heard out at the very least. Plus there was also the matter of the reports they received seeming incredibly biased. That was always suspicious.
āThereās a local tavern nearby that didnāt seem to be affected by the recent thefts. I think thatās where we can find them.ā
"To the tavern we go" Byleth said, leading the way as they headed in the direction Ashe indicated. It wasn't a bad suggestion from the student, Byleth knew many seedy dealing took place in the back room of bars over a drink or three. Besides, it might ease any tension should they find a thief to confront.
They hear the tavern before they see it, loud singing drifting up the street from the open windows. "I think we may have found the place" the professor comments wryly. They push open the door to witness the chaos inside. Most tables were already taken despite the early hour. An upright piano stood in a corner, the keys being hammered by the pianist accompanied by a crowd of drinkers.
It was the perfect place to hide in plain sight.
"Keep an eye out for anyone who stands out, having whispered conversations or glancing round keeping watch"
Ashe follows behind the professor dutifully, keeping an eye out for any suspicious figures as they do. Finally they arrive at what looks to be the tavern, āThe Gloomy Galleonā a crooked sign above the entrance reads. As they step inside, the strong scent of Alcohol and sea salt immediately assaults his senses. He tries to hide the way his nose wrinkles slightly.
āThis definitely seems to be the place.ā Itās a lot rougher than he expected. Itās nothing at all like the restaurants or taverns heās seen before, not even during the nighttime hours when more alcohol was served. Perhaps this is just the fate of a tavern frequented by pirates?
It doesnāt take long for their presence to be noticed either. Perhaps itās their clothes that make them stand out, or maybe itās the fact theyāre not regulars. Either way, people start to stare. Nervously Ashe takes a step closer to the professor.
āWell, aināt you two new faces? What can the Galleon do fer ya?ā The woman running the counter greets them with a smile, unbothered by the stares of her clientele. āThe nameās Candy, I be running this joint. Though the boyās a little young looking for my signature pint, feel free to relax! And donāt worry bout me mates here, they look tough as nails but theyāre sweet as a sea dog, lemme tell ya.ā
All Men Are Not Created Equal
Epidemic +1 Bow
Watching sir Harken rush into the fray was both awe inspiring and a little nerve wracking simultaneously. To be a knight was to have courage and risk your wellbeing for the sake of others, that much he knew. Being on the receiving end of that protection however, knowing he was doing it to give them a safe chance to attack.. definitely made Ashe appreciate that courage even more.
With the beastās focus being on Harken, Ashe took the opening the knight created to draw another arrow, looking for an opening to shut down both of its wings. But with it moving so erratically, finding a clean shot was difficult.
To make matters worse it seemed to have become wise to Harkenās attempt to distract it, its unnerving eyes locking on to the boy that had injured its wing. Despite being grounded it could still rush forward with surprising speed, and like it tried to do with the knight before, the beast plunged its beak towards where Ashe was standing.
Just barely, the archer was able to roll out of the way, narrowly avoiding a grievous injury. But the sheer impact of the beast hitting the ground caused a tremor. As a result Ashe lost his balance, falling to the ground painfully.
In the time it took for him to regain his bearings, the beast had already lifted up its head again and prepared for a second strike now that the boy was downed.
The ground shakes with the force of the beast's rage, and several of the men stagger and attempt to put some more distance between themselves and the bird. Some are unable to keep their footing or escape the immediate threat of the creature, doing what they can to shield themselves from debris.
Amongst those stuck far too close to the rampaging beast was Ashe, and as the creature reared back once more, Harken knew he only had so much time to act.
"Covering fire, now!" he shouted to the handful of archers that had been able to make it clear, sword slotting back into its sheath as he pushes himself forward into a run. They didn't need to hit anything vital on the beast, they just needed to buy their comrades some time. Most had been able to recover, get to their feet and make a mad dash away from the bird -- the boy could not so easily, caught in its raging focus.
It was a desperate maneuver fueled by pure reaction, no thought to the next steps to come afterward.
Harken makes a dive just as the shrieking beast lunges, getting arms around Ashe enough to pull him into the rough tumble they take away from the attack. It isn't enough to fully get them out of range of the giant beak, and with his shield pinned beneath them, Harken can't even try to put up a defense--
Dark blood splatters from above them, the horrendous cry of pain from the beast unbearably loud from their close proximity. The creature's attack miraculously misses them -- though the jagged edges of its beak slam into the ground far too close for comfort -- the cause of its last minute slip becoming clear in the arrow now embedded into one of its eyes.
There's no chance to breathe in any relief, the wounded creature beginning to blindly claw at the ground with its wicked talons.
"Up, up -- get clear of it, now!" Harken urges, scrambling to his feet and hauling Ashe with him.
Briefly Ashe wonders if this is it, if this is how it ends for him as he can only brace himself for the monsterās beak to rend his fragile flesh. But then strong arms pull him away into a roll, and the world spins as a loud thud resounds beside him.
Thereās no time to even contemplate what happened as Sir Harken pulls him to his feet. Adrenaline courses through his body as any soreness in his muscles are forgotten.
āT-Thank you!ā Ashe barely manages to say amidst all the chaos as they distance themselves from the monster. Said monster still rampages, but as more and more viscous blood seeps from its injuries, its movements begin to slow.
ā¦itās strange, but despite having only escaped its wrath moments earlier Ashe feels pity for the beast. Briefly he wonders if that feeling is unbecoming of a knight. It canāt be helped that its organs are needed to cure the ongoing plague, but even so that doesnāt mean they should make it suffer unnecessarily.
And, as if the Goddess is answering to his feelings, one of their allies loosens an arrow at the beast that manages to pierce straight into its heart. With one last shriek, it finally goes down.
āIs⦠Is it over?ā Ashe asks cautiously as he looks towards the blond knight that had just saved his life. If itās dead, it means they could get started with removing the organs needed for the medicine..

I thought of a spell stronger than 24.
Caspar and Ashe, Any+ (training from a distance)
āI honestly cannot believe you two!ā The teacher scolded the two boys, heeled foot repeatedly clicking against the stone floor in irritation. āNot only are your test scores consistently bad, which might I remind you also reflects poorly on your respective houses by lowering the average grade, but when I sign you up for remedial classes you miss them! And for what? A cat that got into the pantry??ā
With every sentence Ashe felt like sinking into the floor further and further, the poor boy looking to be on the verge of tears. Reason had always been his worst subject, so he really was hoping to attend the extra classes and improve his scores! But then the whole debacle about a thief came up, and on their way there was this blur holding a hamā¦.
āI.. Iām really sorry, Professor!ā The boy squeezed his eyes shut and bowed down. āI promise I wonāt-ā
āEnough! Iām in no mood for excuses.ā The teacher cut him off sharply. In response Asheās posture deflated even further. āI was going to guide you through the process, but since youāve both shown thatās not something you care for weāll just move on to the practical exercises.ā
The teacher motioned for the two boys to follow, leading them to⦠the training grounds? Ashe kept his head down until now, but not even that could hide the slight confusion his furrowed brow revealed.
The field had been mostly emptied out, save for a line dividing the middle. Both sides of the field had rows of dummies lined up. āMr Bergliez, left field. Mr Durand, right field.ā She commanded the two. Before that the teacher had also grabbed two tomes, one red and one green and handed it to them. āUse the arithmetic formulas in these tomes to destroy the dummies on the opposite side of your field. I want to see burn marks and cuts of wind. Neither of you will be leaving until every single one has been destroyed. And donāt even think about using a torch or a sword to fake it either- I will know. Lastly, neither of you can cross the line in between. Understood?ā
Ashe looked at Caspar, before looking at the wind tome that was now in his hands. He was on cooking duty today, one of his favorites! If he wasnāt allowed to leave until this assignment was finished, then theyād have to figure this out in just a couple of hoursā¦.
@berglietz
Casparās posture largely matched Asheās on the march out to the field, though he glared down at the stone beneath their feet the whole way. He may not be allowed to voice any excuses, but that doesnāt mean he canāt think about how much more important it would be to catch a thief than learn a bunch of math. What do you even need math for at a military academy? Itās not like you use it forā
āFire magic uses math?!āĀ
He flips the tome open to a random page somewhere in the middle and scans the pages. Thereās a diagram of a sigil on one side, and labels for the parts that have symbols and numbers to explainā¦something. Energy? Power? With a loud groan, he snaps the book shut. Then, for extra measure, he claps the cover of the tome against his forehead.
āā¦Hey, Ashe?ā He slides the book downward until his eyes can peer over the top at his friend. āYou ever cast an elemental spell before? āCuz Iāve only done some pretty basic healing stuff, and I donāt remember formulas for thatā¦ā
As Caspar looks into the tome, Ashe does the same. The diagram explains the basic structure of Magic, but.. it might as well be written in a different language, the way Ashe understands precious little of it. Honestly, just looking at it is making him kind of dizzyā¦
āUm, no. Iāve tried a few times, but so far I havenāt had much success.ā The boy cringes as he thinks back to said previous attempts. Heās been trying to get the hang of it for a while now, because a knight needs to be well rounded. He doesnāt need to become a master sage all of a sudden, but he should at least understand the basicsā¦
Unfortunately even the basics seem out of reach right now.
āThat doesnāt mean we canāt do it though! Iām sure if we study hard we can figure it out.ā He might not be the most academically gifted, but much like how he has to make up for his crestless blood, heās come to learn that the best way to make up for a lack of talent is effort.
Concentrating intensely on the formula before him, Ashe begins to try and cast a spell. The tome in his hand begins to shimmer in response, almost as if itās workingā¦.
āThere!ā He holds his palm out, expecting a gust of wind to fly from it.
ā¦.
ā¦.
*pfoo*
What was supposed to be a mighty gust ended up little more than a soft puff. Just blowing wouldāve produced a more impressive gust, honestlyā¦
sainthood made of sand
mauvier & ashe - home sweet holy land
āW-Wow, really?ā Ashe listened to Mauvier with great interest. Heād heard a few stories about this divine dragon queen already from a few of the monks, who described her like a goddess. Knowing her blessing went into the peaches he was currently holding filled him with an odd sense of reverence and respect. āI guess Iāll have to really give this dessert my all, then. I wouldnāt want to disappoint her.ā
The boy briefly wondered if there was any way to bring these fruits- or perhaps their seeds- back home with him. Or would that be heresy, bringing a blessing from another deity into the domain of the goddess? ā¦also, with how infertile Faerghusā fields tend to be, it would be a monumental task to get them to grow in the first place.
Having arrived in the kitchen, Ashe decided to put that aside for now. Despite having seen it earlier, it was still impressive how well stocked it was. Having prepared a basin of water earlier, he proceeded to gently place the peaches into the basin, watching as they bobbed on the surface. āSir Mauvier, could I ask you to wash and cut the peaches? Iāll get started on the batter then.ā
Cutting the peaches was a relatively simple task- which is why Ashe asked Mauvier to take over that part. It wouldāve taken a lot more time for him to do it on his own, if afterwards he also had to get the batter ready. āThey donāt need to be cut super small- bite sized chunks are perfect.ā He explained with a smile. āAnd if you need help, donāt hesitate to ask.ā
Mauvier has offered his help, and he is nothing if not a man of his word. And obviously, helping to cook peach tarts means handling the peaches -- washing them, cutting them, and the like.
A horrible dread snakes up his spine as he stares into the basin of fruit. As if touching one will cause lightning to rain from the sky, and strike him dead. It's an absolutely ridiculous thought, but it won't leave him.
Queen Lumera had been anything but a vengeful deity. Sir Vander had told him as much, and accounts from all others who had met her regarded her as gentle and loving. Mauvier hadn't had a direct hand in her death, and Lady Veyle had not been in her right mind when she landed the killing blow -- so why does he still feel responsible?
"Of course," Mauvier answers, hovering over the basin. He takes a moment to silently pray over the peaches -- for guidance, for forgiveness. For more than he deserves.
At last, Mauvier gingerly grabs a peach, finding that it no holy fire consumes him. "Apologies," he stammers as he wipes it off, setting it on the counter, hoping Ashe hasn't noticed his hesitation. "I won't burden you with the details, but...the Divine Dragon Queen and I once fought on opposing sides. I saw the error of my ways long ago, but...I suppose I still worry she disfavors me."
Admittedly he didnāt expect that from a man as serene and chivalrous looking as him.. Then again, not many expect him to have a sordid history either. Everyone had their own skeletons, their own chip on their shoulder.
Mauvierās look particularly heavy though. Ashe had noticed the manās hesitation before, but at first decided not to comment too much on it. He seemed to have trouble with handling the peaches, and briefly the boy wondered if he should offer to switch.
This short explanation gave a bit more context, though. And Ashe genuinely could empathize. After all, heās made his own share of mistakes too. Itās easy to get stuck in that feeling of unworthiness in times like those.
āI canāt claim to know the thoughts of a divine dragon, but..ā Briefly putting down the spatula on the table, he turns to look at the man with a sympathizing smile. āThe way the monks spoke of her, she sounded like a very kind and graceful lady.ā Definitely not the vengeful type. Or at least thatās not the vibe Ashe got from the stories.
āI donāt know what you were like before, but to me youāve been nothing but helpful and kind! Your assistance really made my day.ā He doesnāt know how deep this lies within the knight, but he hopes a kind word will at least soothe his worries a little bit.
