Made this mech as a part of Grant Abbit's Character Course over at GameDev.tv!
After getting a tablet and drawing digitally for a bit, honestly all I can say is that comparatively, drawing on paper is nothing short of masochistic.
Practicing some very basic texture painting with my new tablet, as well as various filters and particle systems.
If you ever feel insecure about your 3D skills, just take a look at some of the CGI that makes it to modern day anime and is shamelessly broadcasted on TV.

Blender Character Creator v2.0 for video game design course delivered by Grant Abbit online at GameDev.tv
One thing I wanted to share today is mah man Grant Abbit.
It was a long time ago that I first tried working in Blender, and the first source of information I found was Andrew Price aka Blender Guru. If you’ve heard of Blender, then you’ve almost certainly heard of his donut tutorial.
And you know what? I fucking hated tutorial. It teaches you close to nothing about modeling, and instead focuses on stacking dozens of modifiers that can honestly only be super confusing to a complete beginner. The only thing you can learn from that course is to memorize how to make a donut step by step, without really understanding any of it. And I found that really, really frustrating. To the point that it made me give up on 3D a while back.
But my man Grant? None of that crap. His beginner courses focus almost exclusively on low poly modeling. Simple. Explained in a way so that you understand what’s happening. Going step by step thru even the simplest actions. Pointing out the most common beginner mistakes, why they happen, how they create problems later on, and how to fix them.
All of it is really, really intuitive, easy to follow, simple to understand. Thanks to Grant I can now make some properly substantial things in Blender- buildings, trees, landscapes, and so on, and feel comfortable while doing it. Screw making a donut.
I’ve shared his personal website here, which mostly links to his YouTube tutorial. His channel is amazing and really helpful, so if you care about 3D at all, give it a go.
Absolutely screaming at the fact that the the artwork which has the most likes on my art instagram is the one I made in just a couple of hours, while everything else took WEEKS.
My first time doing a 3D character in Blender- thought I’d do some Hilda fanart. ^_^
You know how friggin exhausted you are with a project when you finally ditch your perfectionism and just go “fuck it, it’s good enough”.
Just a bit of low poly practice based on some childhood memories.

Oh gods, ever since I got into 3D, I’ve become ridiculously aware of all the shoddy 3D modeling and animation in anime, games and so on, and It just keeps distracting meeeeeeeeeee.
Me: "Okay I'm just gonna make a small ROV model as an insignificant side thing to my scene, this should take me a day or two."
Me, two weeks later, reading ROV specs: "Wait how the fuck do propellers even work?"
TIL that the local game studio which I would like to work in primarily uses Blender as their 3D software (instead of Maya or 3D Max) so that’s great! ^_^
I’m really glad I won’t be having to switch to another program to get a job.
TIL that Blender has the option to export your 3D models as paper cutouts.
I will find a way to monetize this, just watch me.
TFW you remember IOR is an actual physical property of materials, and not some random shit that Blender came up with.

Since I’ve spent most of my life building stuff from LEGO, I used to think that my design skills are pretty lit- and to some extent, they are- but working in 3D has made me realize how much LEGO helps out with figuring out the finer details of things, like... With bricks, you don’t have to agonize should something be a bit shorter or a bit taller, you are limited by the parts you have, and sometimes that really speeds up the design process. Well, at least to me and my indecisive anxiousness.
Merry Xmas!
