The whole trilogy is indeed complicated and confusing and there are lots of meanings and interpretations that we came up with but Arrival made me think of this SIMPLE theory. DEPARTURE It was their reality. The seven of them were playing around and such but then they got involved in a car accident. Yes, the six of them died except Jinyoung. Because of the accident, Jinyoung lost himself. He suffered from depression from losing his friends. TURBULENCE This was just Jinyoung's imagination. But the plane crash is real. The car accident and plane crash are two different scenarios. Involvement: Car accident- Seven members Plane crash- Jinyoung only Remember inside the plane when he was left out and the six members were playing around without noticing Jinyoung? Even through the turbulence they acted as if nothing was happening and they kept on playing with themselves while Jinyoung was in panic and the flight attendant was helping him? It was because the six of them are not real anymore. They were just Jinyoung's imagination or hallucination during the plane crash (and probably due to depression). ARRIVAL Jinyoung is in between life and death after the plane crash. It was the moment he woke up in the seashore. "I will never give up" It looks like he was reminiscing his life and trying to fight and live ( he is being revived) until he saw his six friends in the after life. Arrival is Jinyoung's choice of whether to live or to die. To live alone or to die with them.
