Β Β damp tissue is squeezed in hand,Β fingers finding something to do now that theyβre bare,Β on their own again.Β Β βΒ of course!Β i can give you myβ¦Β Β email?Β βΒ Β rising intonation towards the end tells them both itβs an uncertainty.Β has she just shown her age?Β Β it isnβt even hers,Β anyway.Β Β ( we all know whoβs it is. )Β Β no matter.Β distraction puts a nice end to the tears,Β and as melanie neatly secures the documents in her bag,Β an even better one arises. Β Β Β βΒ oh,Β completely,Β Β βΒ is it the pregnancy glow or the post-crying one?Β doesnβt matter;Β sheβs got it.Β Β a smile now,Β too,Β as a palm returns to her stomach.Β for a month itβs been public knowledge,Β and for a month itβs been on the tip of her tongue at all times.Β Β itβs a surprise sheβs held it until this point.Β Β βΒ fifteen weeks now.Β the mood swings are just reminders sheβs there.Β Β thatβs what my mum says,Β Β at least.Β Β β
β sure thing. let me give you mine, actually. βΒ Β lucia suggests, putting pen to a star shaped post-it note.Β she wagers, given melanieβs poor frazzled nerves, that perhaps itβs better she does the writing.Β and whatβs next,Β the woman has to drive herself home?Β no,Β lucia will keep her sat in the chair until she calms down.Β melanie neednβt know the con.Β the teacher delicately places the bright yellow note atop one of the pamphlets: email paired with phone number and name (in case the woman forgets).Β Β β whenever you need me. βΒ Β lucia promises, intending to keep it.Β fifteen weeks?Β her gaze drops to melanieβs stomach.Β Β βΒ oh! i had no idea! βΒ Β her tone floodsΒ with an overwhelmingly earnest excitement.Β lucia loves babies, if the context clues werenβt enough for you to figure it out.Β Β β congratulations, melanie. i couldnβt be happier for you. βΒ Β in fact, she even feels a little guilty.Β Β β iβm so sorry to drag you out of the house so late! i hear the second trimester can be exhausting, you poor thing. βΒ Β βi hearβ may more accurately be put to the tune ofΒ βiβve done my researchβ.Β Β lucia had looked into getting a sperm donor herself, once or twice.Β but adoption (and all the paperwork sheβs filled) was shaping up to be a much better fit.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β One day Miss Flores will have an interaction with Kai whichΒ doesnβt involve the latter being impossibly frazzled and on the verge of a single-parenting-induced breakdown β but not today, it seems.Β Β Β Β Itβs a sentiment heβd struggle to even articulate, let alone openly admit, but it all gets a bit much sometimes. His life often feels like someone running around in preparation for a storm, hurriedly boarding up windows and protecting finery. Raising three children, all hurtling in opposite directions, all wildly differing personalities and all needing different things from himβ¦ itβs a lot. Endless, unfathomable anxiety that thereβs something heβs forgetting, that there must be. Heβs a good father β most days thatβs a question, rarely a certainty.Β Β Would a good father be late to pick up their son ? Would a good father have to rely on the bottomless well of kindness from his teacher ?Β Β Β Β Β Β ( Lucia is so kind to them, so kind it can bring Kai to tears if he thinks about it too much. )
Β Β Β Β Arthur loves Lucia; that isnβt reflected in his behaviour, which is as poor as ever, but the adoration is evident in his wide eyes.Β Kai sees it when he rushes into Arthurβs classroom this afternoon, two hours later than heβs supposed to be, having been kept back by one of ClΓ©oβs teachers who wanted to discuss her mature vocabulary ( aka sheβd called her geography teacher a sanctimonious twat and told her English teacher to go fuck herself ). Heβd dropped ClΓ©o, very pleased with herself for all the trouble sheβd caused, at home with AgnΓ¨s and rushed to get to Arthur. Itβs evident on his features β a sheen of sweat on skin, stray strands of dark hair stuck to his forehead, eyes red-rimmed from crying in the car. Those tears very nearly start up again at the sight of Arthur and Lucia sitting together, heart fraying at the edges.Β Β
Β Β Β Β Β Β Β βHi. Iβm β so sorry Iβm late. So unbelievably sorry. How has he been ? Has he behaved himself ? βΒ Β Β Β ( Wishful thinking on Kaiβs part. Arthur is incapable of behaving. )
lucia wears the remanence of a long day beneath her eyes.Β to say teaching was a labour of love would prove to be exceptionally, even painfully accurate.Β but sitting across from the small boy:Β marked with the mischief of a long day of his own, lucia was continuously being reminded that it was worth it.Β she had had her fair share of students that others mightβve labeledΒ βbad kidsβ.Β lucia (first and foremost) didnβt believe bad kids existed, but even if she did, arthur certainly wouldnβt be one of them.Β sure, he had more energy than he knew what to do with and a little less supervision than most, but neither made him a nightmare.Β a... handful, perhaps, but not a nightmare.Β lucia is more patient than most though, admittedly.Β two more hoursΒ of patience than she was being compensated for, even.Β thereβs a reason miss floresβ yearly reviews are quite so glowingly positive. β mr winterson! βΒ Β thereβs a reflexive sigh of relief to accompany his name, but her features quickly dissolve into concern.Β oh goodness.Β to put it kindly, he looked exhausted.Β lucia rose from her desk, accompanying arthur to greet his father: bleary-eyed and worn.Β Β β please, i understand. βΒ Β she quickly dismisses the apology, spurred by a desire to soften the dogged look in his eyes.Β lucia knows kaiβs home situation is... less than ideal.Β her sympathy for him abounds, and especially so, considering how hardΒ he works.Β lucia had all the time in the world for parents who tried.Β Β β we had a ... creative day today, didnβt we, arthur? βΒ she offers in explanation as to his behaviour, and indeed the paint splattered across his clothing.Β lucia makes an attempt to preempt any further stress.Β Β βΒ -- donβt worry, itβll come out in the wash. promise.Β βΒ Β she assures kai, of the new colourful additions.Β and then, lucia strives for delicacy (lest she reveal too much in front of arthur).Β Β β ... how are you, kai? βΒ Β what she really means, is: are you okay?
*ππππππππππππ.
Β Β touch like this is foreign;Β Β it feels tender and of heart.Β Β lucia wears a soft hand and mel likes the way it sits;Β itβs on hers.Β her starvation grows no words,Β but it dictates a gaze that is just pressed,Β entirely,Β by the hold.Β Β it simply is.Β when eyes do straggle,Β luciaβs part way through her wordsβΒ who are each just as supportive,Β of course.Β Β help?Β wellβ¦Β Β itβs a quick and easy thing to offer.Β but to accept?Β it isnβt the giverβs wayΒ to receive.Β itβs not familiar.Β focus deviates to the box of tissues,Β placed in her direct path.Β how did lucia know?Β itβs too much to deny now,Β those which wish to spill,Β and melβs never been good at holding back tears.Β she can hold back the rest of it,Β though-Β the stuff that needs words.Β thatβs easy. Β Β Β Β Β Β βΒ iβm so sorry,Β βΒ Β hurriedly,Β the mother not yet of three tugs tissues like holding a personal vendetta.Β Β dabbing her eyes,Β like she didnβt do this just to hide her face.Β Β β youβre terribly kind and-βΒ itβs the hormones,Β is what it isβ¦Β Β what i mean isβ thank you,Β lucia.β
β you donβt need to apologise, melanie. βΒ Β lucia insists, keeping a warm hold of her wrist.Β Β β this kind of information can be overwhelming to hear. βΒ Β some of the words they had exchanged this evening had been big, scary.Β lucia was just glad melanie had wanted to listen.Β she gives the woman one final, gentle squeeze, before letting her go -- hands returning to sit clasped on the table between them.Β Β β of course, melanie. i appreciate you coming in tonight and hearing me out. βΒ Β the tears tug to play a sad song on luciaβs heartstrings.Β Β β let me give you these, to take home with you. βΒ she offers, reaching into her draw and pulling out the pamphlets.Β Β β and iβll be happy to send you over my availability and hourly rates, where tutoring is concerned. if thatβs something youβd like to go forward with. βΒ Β lucia will leave that door open for melanie to walk through when sheβs ready.Β but upon reflection, something in there hadnβt quite made the sense lucia wished it would. Β βΒ iβm sorry, the... hormones, did you say? β
*ππππππππππππβ.
Β Β Β matt?Β Β oh god.Β sheβll have to dress this wound again,Β with matt?Β as lucia speaks,Β mel has a moment of head in hands,Β Β a brief dig through strawberry blonde to their roots.Β none more than a few seconds and she returns,Β fingers holding up her chin,Β eyes teary but none spilled.Β Β she feels like the body dragged by ππππ.Β a pessimistic take.Β but,Β still,Β thereβs hope isnβt there? Β Β Β Β Β βΒ his grades, too ?Β Β βΒ Β oh boy.Β sheβll have to detour to the chemist on the way home,Β aid the migraine before it begins.Β Β the teacher is filled with remedies,Β though,Β spoken in a casual confidence mel hasnβt exercisedβ with anything,Β ever.Β Β it means sheβs attached with concentrated frown and full trust.Β Β Β Β Β Β βΒ i would be β¦Β Β you have no idea howΒ grateful.Β Β for the pamphlets,Β too,Β but iβmΒ β-Β iβm referring to the tutoring,Β is this what youβre suggesting?Β Β βΒ it clearly is,Β but mel is nothing if not a double checking mechanism.Β Β besides,Β thereβs barely a second to breathe in.Β Β Β Β β β- we must look terrible.Β matt and i.Β from the cancellations,Β to theβ¦Β to this!Β Β i had no idea things were so badβ¦Β Β he teases his sisterβΒ but i thought it was just a boy thing.Β weβre good parents.Β and we adore our children.Β βΒ Β subconscious hand holds her stomach.Β Β susie is not yet born,Β but must feel her love.Β she must.Β Β paranoia creeps. β this doesnβtβ¦ i donβt know, go on his school record, does it? β will that impact university? heβs ten, for christ sake!
she feels a sharp pang of sympathyΒ as melanieβs head drops into her hands.Β but make no mistake: this is the better outcome by far.Β lucia is sat across from a mother who loved her son, that much is clear.Β the concern she displays for his sake is shockingly earnestΒ --- so much so that it coaxes an ounce of guilt of of lucia, for expecting any less.Β then again, she certainly could not have predicted melanie.Β Β β tutoring, yes.Β βΒ Β she repeats for clarityβs sake, when the woman reappears.Β lucia repositions the tissue box on her desk, placing it gently within melanieβs reach.Β Β βΒ and iβd be happy to do it. βΒ Β sheβll charge a... small fee, naturally.Β but those are details for another time.Β lucia scoots further forward in her chair, amongst the heartfelt pleas.Β when one of melanieβs hands drops below the table, lucia reaches naturally forward to take the other: her hand landing warmly on the womanβs wrist.Β Β βΒ of course youβre a good mother, melanie. βΒ Β lucia can speak to that, even from their brief interaction.Β mother, not parents.Β the omission is accidental.Β Β β no-one is in trouble here. not you, and certainly not josh. kids just... need a little help, sometimes. everyone does. in fact, it quite often happens to the best of us.Β βΒ Β there had been plenty of instances where lucia had needed a helping hand.Β Β she would offer hers, now, where she had never been given one herself.

Β Β thereβs the urge to burst out something inappropriate.Β like an excuse.Β Β like,Β maβam,Β are you aware joshua attends church every sunday without falter?Β ( kicking and screaming,Β omission wouldnβt tell. )Β Β itβs resisted;Β melanie opts to smooth the skirt of her dress instead,Β Β fingers crossed in her lap.Β Β in her silence,Β shame brightens her cheeks and drops her gaze.Β Β it can only be something melanie did wrong.Β sheβs his mother.Β and yet,Β you wouldnβt believe the skill she brings to holding her tongue when itβs on fire.Β one hand cannot count the amount of times sheβs lost her temper with him,Β because it hasnβt been enough.Β Β tonight mel can toss and turn,Β ripping her hair out in the name of a cause,Β a reason for this.Β Β Β Β but right here and now,Β behind a desk,Β lucia offers a solution.Β Β rather,Β the promise of one.Β melβs gaze shoots back up to where it belongs,Β Β leaning forward in posture that mirrorsΒ luciaβs. Β Β Β Β Β Β Β βΒ Β yes,Β of course.Β of course !Β Β what do i do?Β β
the spirit is willing.Β this is a good enough start, for lucia.Β relief relaxes her briefly concerned features:Β making return to a smile.Β Β β well, thereβs a few different places we can start. i can send you home with some reading that might explain things a little more thoroughly than i can tonight. βΒ Β lucia knows this is information that needs time to sink in.Β the pamphlets sitting in her desk draw will hopefully find themselves put to good use.Β her fingers knot, chin rested delicately atop.Β Β β in the meantime ... i would encourage you to spend some time with your son. perhaps bring up with him some of the topics weβve discussed this evening. βΒ Β she then adds, with weighted importance:Β Β β these are issues your husband should be aware of, as well. βΒ Β lucia had hoped to be able to tell him as much herself, but alas.Β Β β you may be recognising josh exhibiting these behaviours in the home, as well. βΒ Β in the homeΒ is a topic lucia would like further insight on, but she warns herself not to push boundaries.Β Β βΒ as far as his academic performance is concerned, i believe josh could benefit from tutoring. iβd like to see him catch up with his peers, with any luck, before winter break. βΒ Β is it ambitious?Β slightly.Β but thatβs lucia for you.Β Β β i can make my time available for extra lessons in the evenings, if thatβs something youβd be interested in. β
*ππππππππππππ.
Β Β it feels like a confrontation.Β her body seizes up like it is;Β some verbal attack on her son.Β calling him josh when it should be joshua;Β she isnβt his friend,Β and it feels disrespectful when it justΒ didnβt three minutes ago.Β miss flores came prepared for the onslaught.Β does she have a list?Β something physical mel can crush in her hands and denounce with frozen smile?Β because each thing is mentioned,Β and for each itβs hard for mel to keep a grasp.Β the mind does funny things under stress,Β Β like choosing not to process the bad.Β all it tells her,Β once lucia has finished with a hell of an introduction,Β is that this isnβt good.Β this is not good.Β Β that general feel,Β Β and one accusation that stood out like a splinter,Β festering. Β Β Β Β β did you justβ β¦ are youβ¦Β calling my son a bully?Β βΒ Β mel blinks.Β the shock of it stuck,Β still;Β a broken clock whose hands point only to one moment.
β if thatβs the word youβd like to use, then... yes. iβm afraid i am. βΒ Β lucia tends to shy away from more disparaging labels, but the term isnβt inaccurate.Β she watches the distress flood melanieβs features, and takes the opportunity to let the woman sit with the idea for a moment before continuing.Β Β β josh is still young. this kind of behaviour isnβt out of the ordinary, but it is cause for concern. i know - as iβm sure you do - heβs not a bad kid. heβs just... having trouble.Β βΒ Β she will extend that much, as far as reassurances go.Β Β β which is why iβm so glad youβre here, melanie. βΒ Β lucia pivots immediately towards solution, in the hopes the womanβs confusion wonβt turn to anger.Β the sweetest of mothers may surprise you.Β Β β these are things we can work on. together, i hope.Β β
*ππππππππππππβ.
Β Β β¦ charming?Β Β were it written,Β melanie would underline it right now.Β Β in red.Β maybe even circled,Β too.Β because charming isnβt the word to describe anything about this woman.Β once,Β perhaps.Β today clumsy is better suited.Β Β muddled.Β Β β wellβ¦Β thank you!Β whatever youβd like to call me isβ¦ just fine with me.Β βΒ Β now that melanieβs been said aloud forβ¦Β only god knows how longβ¦Β well,Β she quite likes the sound of it.Β but again.Β there are important matters,Β here.Β Β Β Β Β βΒ oh,Β he is,Β isnβt he?Β Β βΒ his creativity is something sheβs noticed herself.Β jasmine pleaded for bedtime stories too,Β but nothing compared to the younger mills,Β all stompy-feet and enormous-noise.Β mel gave in so willingly of course,Β fingers in tresses while the dribble wets his pillow,Β snores sounding softly.Β Β he asked less,Β then none,Β but mel has found scribbled stories shoved under his mattress.Β yes,Β Β she has lookedβ and does.Β Β itβs just what mothers do. Β Β Β itβs easy to admit him creative.Β less-so the restβ¦ Β Β Β βΒ Β i β-Β Β okay,Β Β is heββΒ what is theββΒ Β β¦.Β Β βΒ Β upΒ βn down brows further demonstrate the turmoil,Β here.Β Β melanie takes a rounded breath.Β Β β what would you like to say?Β βΒ Β Β it might not be bad.Β who says it has to be bad?
β i donβt mean to alarm you, melanie. βΒ Β she will begin with that, in response to the womanβs furrowed brow.Β but lucia must tell her the truth, however worrisome it may be.Β Β β but i have noticed some behaviour in josh that concerns me. βΒ Β the list is longer than either of them will like.Β Β β he has a lot of friends, which --- is good! of course. and he seems very interested in making them laugh. but ...Β itβs often at the expense of the other children. josh can be ... he can be quite mean, melanie. and thatβs not the kind of behaviour that i accept in my classroom. βΒ Β luciaβs elbows meet the desk, leaning in to the conversation.Β Β β outside of that, well --- he never has his homework done, of course. and i try to be lenient with that kind of thing, but itβs everyday, now. and inΒ class, well he just canβt sit still --- even when he tries, which i think he does, sometimes. these may be symptoms of something, or a byproduct of his life at home. i canβt say for sure, and iβm certainly no doctor. βΒ Β she draws breath, finally.Β Β β but ... i am someone who has been doing this job for a long time. and iβm pretty good at it, to tell you the truth. βΒ Β lucia is wary such information may be received as an attack, which is a confrontation sheβd like to avoid.Β her voice drops, holding the woman in more quiet conversation.Β Β β melanie, as joshβs teacher ... these are things that worry me.Β and as his mother, i think they should worry you, too.Β β
*ππππππππππππβ.
Β Β lucia leads and melanie follows.Β it isnβt with silence;Β two women have plenty to say to one another,Β none of it just noise.Β the mother is quick to notice the teacherβs polite fashion;Β they are a rare breed,Β Β yet two of them share the same room and gaze.Β Β Β β thatβs correct !Β Β βΒ the round eyes of surprise,Β tall brows.Β Β β most guess melinda,Β melissaβ¦Β even melrose,Β would you believe?Β Β βΒ despite the free-fallen laughter and the chairβs comfortable cushion,Β Β the guest in this house sits straight.Β mel reminds herself what sheβs here forβ¦Β Β that itβs not nonsense about her name.Β Β Β Β Β β anyway,Β Β my son,Β joshua.Β iβd love to hear what you have to say about him.Β Β βΒ Β does she?Β sudden is the urge to return to the small talk,Β Β far away from the problems that exist in her boy.
βΒ well, melanie suits you. itβs very charming. βΒ Β she compliments, in earnest.Β call it a habit, and perhaps the reason lucia keeps so many friends.Β good things deserved to be spoken into the world, she tells her students as well as herself.Β she takes her regular seat across from the woman, happy to follow her lead into business.Β lucia has a tendency to linger in places she shouldnβt.Β Β β of course. josh is one of my more ... creative students, i hope youβll be happy to hear. βΒ Β lucia will begin on the most positive note she can.Β Β β heβs very imaginative. and when heβs able to put those thoughts on the page, theyβre fantastic. but ... βΒ Β and there is aΒ βbutβ, unfortunately.Β lucia makes an opening attempt at delicacy.Β Β β there are ... a few reasons i wasΒ so eager to speak to you, melanie. β
*ππππππππππππ.
Β Β a weight she didnβt know was thereΒ has left the shoulders;Β this woman is kind,Β itβs something mel just knows already.Β detail of joshuaβs hiccups will soften the blows of truth,Β Β their words coated in honey.Β Β β and all the same to you,Β lucia.Β you can call me mel.Β Β and iβm so sorry about all those darn reschedules.Β βΒ the mention of her husbandβs vacancy dampers nothing.Β when the teacher peers over her shoulder,Β mel does not.Β there wonβt be a sudden show,Β because there never is.Β there was a time the reality of it dropped smiles and eyes.Β not anymore.Β Β β oh,Β iβm afraid he couldnβt make it tonightβΒ a last minute work thing.Β this isnβt going to be a problem, is it?Β βΒ Β
β well, mel, iβm glad youβre here now.Β βΒ Β lucia canβt bring herself to chastise the woman for rescheduling --Β her apology arriving in such earnestly wrapped sentiment.Β and she arrives this evening alone.Β how unfortunate.Β Β β oh! thatβs a shame. no, no itβs alright. i understand. βΒ lucia will not ring her hands over things that canβt be changed.Β and besides, mrs mills seems like terribly agreeable company.Β perhaps a mother might be easier to appeal to about her sonβs behaviour, than a hypothetical father would be (as was often the case).Β but there was plenty of time for that.Β Β β come on in. βΒ Β lucia beckoned, holding the door open for her and welcoming her into the class.Β the comfiest chair she could find was parked opposite her own desk at the front of the room, allowing them to sit face to face.Β Β β mel ... is that short for melanie? βΒ Β she remarks, curiously.Β βmelβ was a nice enough name, but it didnβt do the woman justice.Β lucia would have picked something much prettier, herself.

Β Β itβs not a great look,Β walking this fast-paced,Β this close to six oβone.Β clicking heels are like ticking clocks,Β a comparison which doesnβt help risen stress levelsβ-Β but she made it.Β she made it!Β kids fed and watched,Β washingβs on the line,Β dinnerβs still warm on the stove,Β and melanie mills made it.Β Β this time. Β Β βΒ hi !Β Β yes !Β thatβs me.Β Β βΒ Β sheβs all pink-cheeked,Β unsteady breath,Β but a smile so bright the rest isnβt worth noticing.Β similar is said of miss flora;Β the latter,Β that is.Β it takes her a moment longer to offer the customary shake of hand,Β distracted.Β do you blame her?Β Β β you must be miss flora.Β oh shoot, iβm not late,Β am i?Β Β βΒ melanie checks her empty wrist.Β Β ah,Β yes.Β her watch will be beside the bath,Β where she left it.Β hopefully not eaten by rust,Β but certainly not here.
β right on time. βΒ Β lucia assures her, without needing to check.Β honestly, sheβs just relieved the woman has made an appearance at all.Β Β β thrilled to finally meet you. and please, call me lucia. βΒ Β theΒ βfinallyβ might have felt like a subtle dig, if anyone else had said it.Β Β but from luciaβs lips, it only sounds sweet.Β the meets the womanβs hand to shake it, holding her gaze with warm intent.Β Β βΒ --- should we ... wait until your husband arrives, to begin? βΒ Β she suggests, peering expectantly over melanieβs shoulder down the hall:Β still waiting for her partner to make his entrance.Β Β she always asked for both parents for these kind of things, if at all possible.Β lucia found meeting her studentsβ parents endlessly insightful.Β to look at his mother (for one example), she can see where joshua gets his brilliant smile.

whether the hours are billed or not, lucia spends most of her workdays staying late after class.Β sometimes cleaning, others decorating ---Β occasionally keeping watch over students whose parents hadnβt shown up on time to take them home.Β small, comfortable tasks.Β although admittedly, lucia did like to be out the door and on the road before dark.Β but tonight had different plans for her.Β she checks her phone:Β no cancellation email, yet.Β well!Β thatβs a better omen than the last two timesΒ the mills family had asked to reschedule.Β it worries her, truth be told.Β paired with joshβs erratic behaviour ...Β lucia hopes she isnβt sensing a pattern.Β Β sheβll do her best to stow her preconceptions, before meeting the pair.Β speaking of! lucia hears the clickingΒ of shoes bustling down the hallway.Β either the janitor has gotten himself a new shiny pair of boots, or her company for the evening has arrived.Β she checks her watch:Β right on time, thankfully.Β sweeping the hair off her face, lucia makes for the doorway, pushing the half-open door wide.Β Β β mr & mrs mills? β she beckons, wandering into the hall.Β but lucia spies one figure (obscured by dwindling evening light), not two.Β perhaps she has the wrong woman.Β ββ

βI have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing β their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling β their inner lives. They speak subjectively, they argue less, there are longer pauses. To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall, but not if I switch on the lights β then I start thinking about projects, deadlines, demands, and the shadows and shapes of the house become objects, not suggestions, things that need to done, not a background to thought.β
β Why I adore the night, by Jeanette Winterson (via lostpolaroids)
