A Woodchuck Wedding: Ch. 8
Back at it on a Tuesday...
So Will finally popped the question to Val, and of course she said YES (as well as 'what took you so long?') so it's time for another celebration for our Mobian friends! But of course you know we can't have a gathering of this magnitude without a little drama or adventure... and frankly I don't think Will and Val would have it any other way. So please enjoy the tales leading up to a Woodchuck Wedding!
Story Teaser: Amy Rose and CC help console Val after her brother's ill-timed sales pitch, and Valerie relays some adventures from her past that show her family has always been a challenge...
Ch. 8: Growing Up Is Hard To Do…
Valerie’s sobbing quieted slowly in William’s embrace, and she looked up at him lovingly. “Do you want me to confront them? Tell them to get with the program or get out?” William asked, a determined seriousness in his eyes. Valerie shook her head: “No… despite everything they are my family… and I’d never forgive myself if I excluded them… or if they became estranged from us.” She wiped her eyes, cuddling back into William’s chest: “I was thinking, though… can you check with Winston to be sure all our paperwork and signatures are in order? Knowing Pater he will bring that up at some point…”
“Of course,” smiled William, regretfully releasing their embrace. “Anything else I can help with?” Val kissed him gently: “I’ll be sure to let you know if I think of something.” She watched him walk towards the Judge who was conversing with the Farmhouse Trio, reviewing the music and program cues with them. Val sighed lovingly as she sat on a bench near the Caffeinatory kitchen, looking weary from all the drama.
Her posture and demeanor didn’t go unnoticed by Amy and CC, the pink hedgehog tapping the Robian on the shoulder and motioning that they should check on Valerie. “Hey Val,” piped Amy as they approached the Woodchuck bride-to-be. “You look like you could use a couple friends’ company right now. Mind if we join you?” Val perked up instantly, motioning to two chairs facing her: “Of course I don't mind. Thank you so much for offering.”
CC looked pensive: “I did not realize your family was so… headstrong. I hope you are not offended if I ask whether… they have always been this… difficult.” Val laughed gently, patting CC on the shoulder: “Oh, CC… it takes a lot more than that to offend me. I’ve had to deal with their quirks my whole life… guess I should have expected something like this to come up.” Amy smiled at her Woodchuck friend: “It always helps to talk… and we’re here to listen.”
Valerie smiled wearily: “It all goes… way back actually… to when I was a cub. I kept getting into trouble in school, so Pater had me tested… and found out I was highly intelligent for my age. It led to me being easily bored and finding… non-productive ways of entertaining myself.” CC nodded: “That is a frequent sign in younger children. I am… surprised your issues were confined to your schooling.” “Um… yeah,” laughed Val ironically. “They weren’t. I got caught shoplifting and pickpocketing several times. So much so that Pater ‘hired’ me to ‘help’ with accounting in his Financial firm… more so he could keep me under his watch than actually needing my help.”
“It worked out for a while,” she continued. “I understood what he was doing pretty well and had some good insights, but it just wasn’t my thing. I got bored again and my idle mind wandered back to my mischievous ways.” Amy frowned: “Knowing your Dad even as briefly as we have, I can imagine his patience for that was… rather short.” “You’ve got Pater pegged for real,” nodded Valerie. “After several times bailing me out at the local precinct when I was a teenager, he marched me down to the nearest Mobian Guard recruiting office. Said that joining the military would give me some ‘proper discipline.’” “I can imagine you did not react well to that… forced conscription,” commented CC.
“Yep. After he made me sign the paperwork I ran away,” continued Valerie. “When he and the MPs caught up with me, he made me a deal: if I completed my Service, he would buy me a luxury condo in the Parkview area where I could make my ‘home base’ and blaze my own path… so long as I kept myself out of trouble.” Amy smiled uneasily: “That was… somewhat generous of him.” “Heh. Pater always thinks of himself though, and shapes circumstances to make him look good,” huffed Valerie. “It was more about protecting his reputation from a rebellious child than actually being sure I had a secure life.
"And while I was in the Service, Viktor became his 'favorite' by deciding to follow him into the 'family business,' even though he wasn't nearly as good at finance as I was." Val sighed, motioning towards her brother who was still stinging from her rebuke. "So having the condo in a distant town was another way of Pater writing me off... since he now had a successor." Amy and CC looked surprised, then saddened by Val's assessment of her relationship with her father and brother.
“But by the time I got out of the Guard I was determined to prove him wrong… to show I could truly make something of myself without his help… beyond the condo that is.” Valerie shook her head: “It wasn’t easy though. I was able to leverage my Guard service into several entry-level jobs… which never lasted long. I couldn’t find anything that truly interested me… until I found a couple small ‘techy’ jobs.” Her eyes twinkled at that memory: “That, I found intriguing. The more I learned about these electronics and devices, the more I wanted to know. I considered it my ‘big break’ when I landed the Operator’s job at Walter’s Fabratory. It was a long drive but worth it to work in a real device factory.”
“Gary and Pedro shared their memory files from when you were first hired,” smiled CC. “They said you were so nervous and not sure how to act… so eager to make a good impression.” Val laughed politely: “It was… odd to see these little ‘bots shuttling everywhere. Part of why I was so surprised when a scruffy Woodchuck greeted me later that day.” Her smile brightened as she recalled her first meeting with William: “Meeting Will there was awkward at first… but definitely an added bonus of the job.” She put her head in her hands sadly: “I… can’t believe I threw that away. More than once, honestly… that's what I get for listening to Pater's influence in the back of my mind... both about Robians and about William.” Val looked at CC appreciatively: “I’m so glad you were patient with me… that you were able to help me step away from my Pater's sway... and that you brought me and Will back together…”
The Robian and Woodchuck hugged warmly, reinforcing the close friendship they had built since those days after CC had located Valerie… despite their rocky reacquaintance. Amy looked on approvingly: “The important thing is that you and Will are together,” she agreed. “ And that after tomorrow, you always will be… pardon the pun.”
All three ladies laughed as Valerie wiped a happy tear from her eyes: “I… hope that wasn’t all… too much information,” she commented shyly. “It’s just… all these memories come rushing back… and the more I reflect on them the more I see… how blessed I am to have William in my life… and I don’t want anything to ruin that.”
The pink hedgehog smiled at her friend: “I do believe in Fate… and in a Higher Power. And for that reason I know things have a way of working out the way they should.” She motioned towards William, who was enjoying a hearty laugh with Winston and Tails. “It was no accident that Tails found William and CC, and then that CC found you.” “Agreed,” commented CC. “And now it shall all come together between you and William, with bonds so strong they shall never be broken, by anyone or anything.”
Valerie smiled broadly, as the three friends enjoyed a warm group hug: “Thanks, you two. Your support and friendship means more than I can say. I feel so much better after talking to you.” She rose confidently and motioned to them: “Now come on… let’s eat…”
