Brideshead Revisited (2008) dir. Julian Jarrold
A straight boy I worked with once told me Brideshead Revisted was his favorite book of all time. He even named his cat Evelyn after the author. On his recommendation I read the book and loved it too. The homosexual undertones were really what drew me to it. I thought maybe it was this boys way of sending me a message. He invited me over to his apartment to talk about the book. It was the first time I had ever been high. We laid on his bed and I was mesmerized by the fairy lights hanging from his ceiling. He took out his guitar and played songs for me. As I walked home, still high and full of yearning, I thought it was maybe the most romantic night of my life. But, like Charles and Sebastian, our relationship never went further. I sometimes wonder what that night was like for him and whether he too wanted more.
