amidst deadening, maddening silence, all madotsuki initially heard was the droning tone of her own thoughts, circling like buzzards through her mind————— this is not my place. this is not my place. i’m trespassing. this is not my place. i need to leave, right now, right now. a terrible feeling, really, causing brief spikes in her perceived heart rate.
even a perceived heart rate was enough to make one jump out of their skin when startled to such an extent as the dreamy girl was when a very tangible voice called out her name. the fight or flight response immediately kicked in, even before she had turned around, whipping to face the other with hands stiffened like a cartoonish kung-fu master. several heavy breaths were taken, eyes darting up and down the other as she came to a slow, vague memory.
❛ ire…zumi…? ❜
now that was a name she hadn’t heard in a very long time. perhaps written in the ugly scrawls of her notebook, though never, ever spoken.
❛ u…uhm… am i imagining you…? uhm… ❜
❝ — HEH! ❞ With an amused snort, his face lit up, and at last the boy leaped to the ground, landing skillfully on his feet. ❝ It IS you! ❞ he chortled, gliding right up to Madotsuki to sling a lanky arm right over her shoulder. ❝ Keheheh-- Fuck, I haven’t heard that name in ages! But it feels like yesterday when y’say it, Mads... ❞ He was undeniably gleeful to have a familiar face emerge here in The Flow, and one he was fond of at that--- though it sure SUCKED for her, didn’t it? Oh well... The more the merrier, right?
❝ Y’aint imaginin’ shit. Better get that idea outta yer head before it trips ya up later. ❞ Finally, he stepped back to give the girl some space-- or, rather, to watch her face change as he cordially informed her exactly what this SHITHOLE she’d landed herself in really was. ❝ So, I betcha don’t know how y’got here, yeah? ❞

...Could it BE? His sleepless eyes were fixated on the image of a girl-- one he’d never seen HERE, but had certainly seen before...
❝ — Oi, ❞ came his call, the sound quieted, ( but not silenced ), by the distance between himself and the figure on the ground. With legs swung over the rooftops edge, he leered at her as she turned, and only stood once eye contact was made. Now that he had full view of her features, he KNEW for sure, and began his descent with honed skill along the side of the decaying building. ❝ Heh... Yer Madotsuki, aren’t ‘cha...? ❞ His toothy grin was almost reminiscent of the days he’d lived free of this TWISTED place. ❝ ...‘Member me? ❞

There was no mistaking it--- she was the dreamer he’d been searching for.
He’d watched her long enough, stalking the girl through her own dreams, ( so he believed ), until the perfect time would come to reveal himself. But as he often did, Smile had grown tired of waiting, and he’d eventually set a lure, trail markings in a way, to lead her astray. Now, with the two of them isolated within a rather dangerous area, he finally decided to reveal himself, and so the boy eagerly leaped down from his perch, the lower ledge of a building, and strode up to her with a toothy, cheshire grin.
❝ — S’aint a great place t’be takin’ a stroll y’know... ‘less y’got more than a pretty face t’keep yerself safe. Heh. ❞

She trains her dull gaze on him and her leather boots came to a complete stop upon hearing his voice ricocheted around the mold-covered walls. For the briefest of moments there was a part of her, an overwhelmingly large part of her, that had felt instant relief in finding another inside the dark confines of the sewers. And although there were shadow-like creatures wondering around the place they didn’t possess the ability to speak much like Smile did. She had found that his tone seemed amiable enough, but it his harsh sneer that marred Smile’s rather unique features had suggested otherwise to her. Warning bells began to ring in her head and like that Viola’s initial relief had vanished and was replaced with apprehension. Thus causing a great divide in her mind. The desire to forgo all of the hesitance that plagues her thoughts was oh so compelling. She truly wanted nothing more than to trust the stranger to lead her away from this foul place. Lead her to where she was supposed to be. Somewhere, in a place that had nothing but a sea of green. And yet, there was an odd question that niggled at her mind.
Could she trust him?
Within the hollow of her chest (she had no heart, not anymore, the dead had no use for such things) she had felt a faint stirring and once more vague “recollections” would being to flood her mind. Trust. She had trusted someone before… a person she had once held dear to. Yet her feelings suggest that the person had betrayed her, effectively shattering the complete and total faith she had placed in them. Of course, this sudden memory would only bring forth a myriad of questions to which she had no answers to. Her gaze then falls to the ground, as though she had found a sudden interest in the water that flows between the two, and she carefully considering her choice of words.
‘ Lost…? I think I am, yes. Well… at least I know that I shouldn’t be here, rather I think I should be somewhere else. In a place that’s green. Green as far the eye can see, ’ she pauses for a moment. ‘ But how can I know that you will lead me to that place? ’
How can I know that I can trust you, the true meaning behind her question lingers in the air, but her words failed to spill past her lips.
That answer told him quite a lot-- she was not only lost, but confused, or perhaps even disoriented... Whatever the reason, she spoke as though she were lost within a dream, and it couldn’t have amused Smile more.
With a widening sneer plaguing his features, the boy took a few steps back, just enough to get a running start before abruptly launching himself across the stream of running water. He’d barely made it, flunked it in the past, but his physique had indeed changed from the first days of his time in the Flow to now, making some previously impossible things plausible. Straightening his back, Smile then lessened the distance between them, stalking right into her personal space without a shred of regard for her comfort.
❝ — Someplace green...? ❞ he echoed, cocking his head to the side. As he thought to himself about her words, he studied the girl with a leering eye. Perhaps he could humor her for now... She clearly didn’t have any idea of her situation, and those types often proved the best entertainment. Still grinning to himself, Smile gave a small shrug, then finally took a step back to put some space between them, briefly arching his back in a lazy stretch. ❝ Ain’t really much green around here... But I can take ya t’the greenest place there is if that’ll set yer nerves at ease. Heheh. ❞
soultested:
The flow was an unforgiving realm, mercy could not be found within the grotesque environment. Bias was yet another concept that didn’t exist in the flow, because whether the soul had previously lived a life full of riches before meeting their demise, or if the soul lived a miserable life bound to their bed due to an illness did not matter. The flow does not differentiate between the two and it often devours whatever spirit it may choose with its mighty maw. Viola, a young girl who possessed both an innocent and naïve soul, was among the many who had been unfortunate enough to end up here. She has yet to learn of the horrors that hide inside the realm.
It was the distant sound of flowing water along with the putrid scent of the murky, stagnant water, which had burned her nose and throat, that roused Viola from her slumber. The moment she had opened her eyes to the neverending darkness, the heavy fog of delirium that had once blanketed her mind from the moment she was rebirthed into the witch’s decaying body had lifted from her consciousness and along with it, her memories prior to ending up in the flow. Vague moments would so dully prod at her mind, but it wasn’t enough to paint a clear picture for her. Each time she would try to grasp at a vague memory, it would often slip through the cracks of her mind. The only thing that remained with her were the emotions she had felt during her short time as a witch, still resonating so deeply and strongly within her very being. Despair. She had fallen prey to the overwhelming feeling of despair, its grip onto her hollow chest far too strong to shake away. But why, she wondered to herself, what happened to make her feel this way? Yet no answer would come.
Her limbs screamed with agony when Viola lifts herself from the ground. She found that no good would come if she were to lay around the floor for a moment longer, Viola will just have to look for the answers she seeks by herself. Her footsteps fill the heavy silence that the sewers carried and Viola ventures further into the darkness that seemed to beckon for her.
“…. where am I? I think… I think I was trying to stop someone but who? Why?” she questioned out loud, of course, she was not naive enough to expect someone to answer back in place that was so desolate, devoid of all life.

After an immeasurable amount of time spent within the Flow-- ( whether days or months or years, it was impossible to tell ), Smile had found himself able to sense something of a ripple, a tear in the unearthly plane upon which the ever-changing Flow timelessly prevailed. A disturbance like this was always subtle, but not subtle enough to dismiss, coming about specifically when the Flow made contact with the real world, meaning another soul had just become ensnared here with the rest its unfortunate denizens.
Rising from where he’d perched himself upon the building’s rooftop, Smile eagerly made his way down the outer wall, windowsill to windowsill until the soles of his shoes had hit the hard pavement below. There was an energy churning inside him, something both stimulating and invigorating, and all-too-consuming. The pitiable soul was wandering about somewhere, likely somewhere dangerous, he mused. The only option was to find it-- but not out of kindness, never out of consideration, no... It was Smile who prayed upon those who’d lost their way in this unforgiving place, for nothing could possibly entertain him better now that she had become too dangerous to toy with any longer.
His dark gaze swept the streets, the alleyways, the docks and the sewers, and it was there that he found the girl, the one thing that didn’t belong.
❝ — …Yer lost, yeah? ❞ His voice rang clear through the tunnel, drawing her attention to where he’d emerged at the other side of the running sewer water that separated them. Although his words could have been kind, the grin he wore was far from pleasant, stretching wide enough to practically hear it as he spoke. ❝ Heh. Lemme help y’out. ❞

the petite girl in red scanned the surrounding area with wide eyes, she certainly didn’t know where she was or how she even got there. yet she had gotten up, dusted herself off &. rushed over to the closest human being she could see from a distance, ❝ um … excuse me ? ❞ she gently gave the others shoulder a tap before retracting her hand to her chest in wait for a simple response.
Eyes dim as the dark skies overhead, the boy trailed back and forth within the moon-cast shadow of an abandoned building, a cigarette dangling between his lips as he carried on in a seemingly mindless daze. It was only the sound of footsteps tapping hesitantly against the pavement that pulled him back to the present, gaze shifting restlessly about him only to swing his head behind following the light tap of a finger on his shoulder.
‘ A girl... ‘ He couldn’t be bothered to resist the subtle hint of a sneer tugging at his features. Turning to face her properly, he flicked the cigarette to the ground and leaned forward, drawing in just a bit too close for comfort in a subconscious attempt to intimidate as he spoke up.
“ — oh, lemme guess. yer lost? “
Maybe it’s me– maybe I’m hard to love.

❝ …. ❞ she hesitates, shifting nervously where she stands. in the midst of the silence hanging stiffly in the air between them, her fingers tremble, unsurprisingly, and curl into a fist at her side. ❝ do you have something in mind ? ❞
SHOWING OFF … a toothy grin, he takes her passively concurrent response as a queue to approach, one, two, three steps closer. a hand lands atop her shoulder, unwarranted, as he is well-aware. he is enthused by the idea of passing time with sabitsuki, now that he has her where he wants her, where she won’t be able to weasel her way out of spending time with him. disregarding her uneasiness, he holds to his pleased expression as his free hand digs out a stolen pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his vest.

A pensive gaze followed each speaker’s expression, trying to gauge the severity of what ever proposal was to come. Lips slowly pulled back in distaste, a grimace at the thought of the three of them initiating the start of some sort of foolish little club. The words left room for a punchline, but he was positive it wouldn’t come. He hadn’t expected too much from a girl that hung out with Smile, but he was hoping to hold her to a higher standard.
“Is that…it? You’re joking, right?”
A chuckle left his lips, a hand moving quickly to cover his mouth. Things like that weren’t child’s play. Although Smile was one of the most reckless people he knew, Monoe didn’t seem the type to be playing games. It’d be a lie if he said she hadn’t captured his interest. Pale fingers reached back into his bag for his flask before finishing off the remainder with the hint of a smile.
“Look– Monoe, you’re going to need more than a pretty face to convince me to do something that idiotic.”
KEEN EYES STUCK LIKE GLUE … to his good friend’s figure, preoccupied with his reaction. really, he’d expected nothing less from kao. there was no way he’d agree to it without a bit of persuasion, and the two of them had come prepared. a crooked smile pulled at one corner of his lips as he stepped up to monoe’s side, and he spoke, exaggerating an expression of disappointment with a drawn-out shake of the head.
“ — hey, hold on, kao. yer a fuckin’ drag, man ... “
Inevitably, the guy had no clue what kind of fortuitous opportunity was being presented to him, and that was because the idea’s primary selling points had yet to be revealed. a knowing glance in monoe’s direction was quick to follow, a hint of amusement reflected between their gazes as eyes met and fell apart, smile planting his focus entirely on kao. self-assured, as if already convinced that no trouble would come from it, he began his animated explanation, tenaciously observing his friend’s responses.
“ ‘s’all about th’money ... money’s everything. it’s power. ‘n power’s somethin’ everyone can use more of in these parts. all we need’s a bit a dough ‘n th’right connects ... ‘n she’s fuckin’ got ‘em both. that chick can do anything -- 'm serious. “
