Time for an Ancient Egypt geek-out!

I’ve been rereading the first Amelia Peabody book, Crocodile on the Sandbank (you can read through quotes from this book I love dearly in my “quote all the AP” tag), and I’m legitimately excited to get to the section talking about the Pavement in Amarna.

Why?  Because I’ve seen some of the Amarna Pavement, and I’m going to share my pictures and info with you!

(also, moment to say how cool it is that the Amelia Peabody books talk about real Ancient Egyptian artifacts and features that you can see; sure, it’s historical fiction–fabulous historical fiction!–but you’ll also learn some super sweet stuff)

On with the cool stuff!  Seriously, it’s cool.  Armchair Egyptology, whoo!

Victorian lady Egyptologist feminist detective (I mean y'all this woman is such a BAMF)

Amelia is better than basically everyone

Saw skirts as a nuisance and designed her own working costume of “divided trousers” and gave no fucks if anyone didn’t like it

Organized as shit and basically takes charge of every situation

Diverse and multi-cultural family (aka fuck your societal norms)

Did I mention the Victorian feminist Egyptologist detective bit??

Puts up with none of your gendered bullshit (uses her parasol as a weapon like yeah I’ll show you a delicate lady!)

Makes fun of Victorian detective novels whilst being an amateur Victorian detective (can throw so much shade you don’t even know)

Decided she wouldn’t marry, because most men thought women were inferior and she would be having none of that

When she did decide on a husband, it was one that fully supported her awesometude (seriously think about that pic of Will Smith and Jada on the red carpet- the one with the arms. And that’s basically her hubs but with a lot more Victorian swearing)

Cats! There are so many amazing cats throughout this series. The cats are also better than everyone.

She thinks it’s stupid that a woman be shamed for running off with a man that turned out to be an asshole. Mistakes are mistakes it doesn’t make her a ‘fallen’ woman in Amelia’s eyes.

An honestly amazing love story between her and the hubs that is realistic and not the typical ‘man saving weak lady’ business

19 books covering almost 40 years of this woman’s amazing adventures in Egypt, so tons of material

Seriously, just go read all the stories you probably won’t regret it.
