too many readers feel an insane sense of entitlement when it comes to fanfiction. i don’t know why people feel so comfortable leaving hate in so many of my fellow writer’s inboxes or comments on ao3, but it has to stop.

we do this in our spare time because we are passionate about writing and the characters—for free might i add—and its not going to be catered to anyone unless its from an ask. if you have such an issue with a specific writing style or content in a fic you scroll and move on with your day, you dont go anonymously into an inbox or the comments and hate on the author. if an author’s writing style bugs you SO much then you scroll past or block.

this is why so many people quit writing and its gotten so much worse in the past year and a half. we write stories we want to make, if you like it great (leave a comment it encourages us!), if you don’t then you carry on with your day and find something you do like. you can’t dogpile or hate on someone and then act surprised when they inevitably quit because it got to be overwhelming.

most of us put content warnings before the fic since tumblr’s tagging system isnt too good, but read them or at least don’t act shocked when a freaky ass fic is freaky… and on ao3 the tagging system is extensive and such an amazing tool so use it (its not hard after the first couple times!)

you as a reader are entitled to your own opinions about what you’re reading, but when you don’t like something you close it and don’t read it. you don’t get on tiktok or twitter and talk shit about specific fics or specific authors. unless someone adds a little note welcoming constructive criticism you say nothing.
