Y/N thought her third year at Seoul National University would be just like the last two—late-night study sessions, coffee runs with her friends, and surviving another semester with the people she considered family.
Then Sungchan shows up to the welcome party with a freshman.
Anton.
Young, annoyingly confident, effortlessly charming… and somehow always exactly where Y/N is.
From the very beginning, they can’t seem to agree on anything. Every accidental meeting turns into playful bickering, every conversation into a competition, and every interaction leaves Y/N more convinced that he’s the last person she’d ever get along with.
Unfortunately for her, Anton seems to enjoy getting on her nerves.
What starts as harmless teasing slowly turns into something much more complicated when one impulsive lie forces them into a fake relationship neither of them wanted.
Now they have to convince everyone they’re dating—while navigating jealous friends, unexpected feelings, misunderstandings, and the blurry line between pretending and falling for real.
Because sometimes the person you swear you can’t stand…
…is the one you end up loving the most.

The lecture ended with the familiar sound of laptops closing and chairs scraping across the floor. Professor Lee gathered his notes before looking up at the class.
“Don’t forget.”
“The project proposal is due next week.”
A chorus of groans echoed through the lecture hall.
“I’ll see all of you on Wednesday.”
Within seconds, students began filing toward the exit. Karina slipped her notebook into her bag.“I have another lecture.”
Sungchan checked his phone. “So do I.”
Y/N sighed. “I’ve got a free period.”
“Must be nice,” Karina said.
“I’ll let you know after I spend it stressing over this project.”
Sungchan laughed. “You’ll be fine.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“You don’t have to.”
Karina smiled. “See you later?”
“The café?”
“Obviously.”
“See you.”
The three walked out of the lecture hall together. As soon as they reached the hallway, Karina and Sungchan turned toward the staircase leading to their next class.
“Don’t disappear,” Sungchan called over his shoulder. “No promises.” Y/N watched them disappear into the crowd before adjusting the strap of her bag.
She had barely taken a few steps—
“Y/N.”
She stopped.
Jay caught up to her with an easy smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
He shifted the folder under his arm.
“I was thinking…Since we’re partners we should probably get started soon.”
Y/N nodded politely. “Yeah.”
“I was just about to head somewhere.” she lied.
“What about tomorrow after class?”
She hesitated for a split second.
“I think I’m busy.” she lied again.
Jay smiled. “No worries.”
“The day after?”
“…I’ll have to check.”
“Just let me know.”
He pulled out his phone. “Did we exchange numbers already?”
“We did.”
“Right..I’ll text you later then.”
“Sounds good.”
He smiled once more before walking off down the hallway. Y/N watched him disappear into the crowd.
She let out a quiet sigh. There was nothing wrong with him. He hadn’t been rude. Or pushy. Or disrespectful.
He was just…
A little too much.
And somehow…
That was enough to make her want the next hour to herself. Without thinking twice, she turned toward the one place on campus she knew would always have decent coffee.
The café was quieter than usual.
Not empty—
Just quiet enough for the soft hum of conversations to blend with the sound of the espresso machine. Y/N stepped inside, automatically making her way to the counter.
“One iced latte, please.”
A few minutes later, drink in hand, she turned to look for a table.
Every single one was occupied. “…Seriously?”
She scanned the room one more time before her eyes landed on the table by the window.
Anton.
His laptop was open, a notebook lay beside it, and several sheets of music were neatly spread across the table. An iced americano sat next to his hand. As if sensing someone looking at him, he glanced up.
A small smile crossed his face.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
Y/N looked around the café again.
“I think that’s the last free seat?”
Anton glanced at the empty chair across from him.
“I think it is.”
She laughed softly. “I guess today’s my lucky day.”
“Or unlucky.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“You’ll have to spend your break with me.”
“I think I’ll survive.”
“I’ll try not to make it too painful.”
“I appreciate that.”
She pulled out the chair and sat down, placing her latte beside her laptop. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn’t awkward. It was the kind that naturally settled between two people who didn’t feel the need to fill every second with conversation. Anton closed the notebook he’d been reading.
“Finished with class?”
“Just now.”
“You?”
“I’ve been here for about an hour studying .”
Y/N looked at the pile of notes in front of him.
“Voluntarily?”
He looked up.
“…Yes.”
“That’s concerning.”
Anton laughed. “Coming from the person who practically lives in this café?”
“I come here for the coffee.”
“You also bring your laptop.”
“…That’s unrelated.”
“I’m not convinced.”
She smiled despite herself.
“You’ve been here a week and you’re already making observations.”
“I pay attention.”
“I noticed.”
Anton took another sip of his americano.
“So…”
“How’s the project?”
Y/N groaned immediately. “Can we not?”
“…That bad?”
She leaned back in her chair. “My partner already wants to plan everything.”
“I thought that was the point of a group project.”
“It is.”
“But we’ve barely been assigned.”
Anton smiled. “Someone’s enthusiastic.”
“That’s one way to put it. He already wanted to plan our entire schedule before we even left the lecture hall.”
Anton let out a quiet laugh. “Okay…”
“I can see why that’s a little much.”
“See?”
“I knew you’d understand eventually.”
“I’m not saying he’s wrong. I’m saying I’d probably wait a day or two.”
“Exactly.”
For the first time since leaving the lecture hall, Y/N felt herself relax.
Talking to Anton was…
Easy.
There was no pressure to keep the conversation going. No awkward pauses. Just small jokes between sips of coffee.
After a while, Anton glanced at the time on his phone. “I should get going.”
Y/N looked up. “Another class?”
He shook his head as he packed his laptop into his backpack. “Swimming practice.”
“You swim?”
He smiled. “I’d be a pretty bad member of the swim club if I didn’t.”
She laughed. “Fair point.”
“So you’re in one of the university clubs?”
“The swim team..yeah”
“That explains the schedule.”
“We train almost every afternoon.”
“Sounds exhausting.”
“It is.”
“So why do it?”
Anton thought for a second before smiling.
“I’ve been swimming for years. I guess it never really stopped feeling like home.”
Y/N nodded slowly. “That’s… actually kind of nice.” she said. He zipped up his backpack and stood. “What about you?”
“Any clubs?”
She shook her head. “Not this semester.”
“I’m trying to survive Professor Lee first.”
“…Smart choice.”
They left the café together, walking side by side until the path split in two. Anton nodded toward the sports complex. “Practice.”
Y/N pointed toward the Business building.
“I should probably pretend to work on my project.”
He smiled. “Good luck.”
She sighed dramatically. “I’m going to need it.”
“I believe in you.”
“You really shouldn’t.”
Anton laughed. “I’ll see you around.”
“Probably.”
They exchanged a small wave before heading in opposite directions.
Neither of them realized that these quiet coffee breaks were slowly becoming part of their routine.

Author’s note: lol I finally had time to update. Enjoy!! Maybe I’ll do a double update today.
The first day of the semester always came with one universal truth. No timetable was ever perfect. Some students were unlucky enough to start with three lectures in a row. Others somehow ended up with two-hour breaks they had no idea how to fill.
Y/N belonged to the second group.
“I’ll see you guys later.” She adjusted the strap of her bag as the rest of the group stopped outside the Business building.
Karina glanced at her timetable. “You’re heading to the café?”
“When am I not?”
Sungchan laughed. “You practically live there.”
“It’s a nice place.”
“It’s your second home.”
“I won’t deny that.”
Karina smiled. “Save us a seat if we’re done early.”
“I’ll try.”
“Don’t let NingNing find you first.”
“She still has another lecture.”
“Exactly.”
With a wave, Y/N watched the others disappear into the building before turning back toward the campus path.
For once…
She wasn’t in a hurry.
Across campus, Anton stared at his timetable for what felt like the tenth time that morning.
“…A two-hour break?”
Wonbin looked over. “You’ve got lucky.”
“It feels strange.”
“You’ll appreciate it by midterms.”
“I probably will.”
Wonbin checked the time. “I’ve got another class.”
Anton nodded. “Guess I’ll look around.”
“You could always go to the café.”
“The one by the main gate?”
“Mhm.. It’s usually full…”
“…but the coffee’s good.”
Anton smiled. “I’ll take my chances.”
With that, the two headed in different directions.
A few minutes later, Anton pushed open the familiar café door. The bell above the entrance chimed softly. Just as Wonbin had warned him…
The place was packed. Every table was occupied.
Students sat with laptops, notebooks and iced coffees, filling the café with a constant buzz of conversation.
Anton looked around once.
Then twice.
Nothing.
Until his eyes landed on a familiar face sitting by the window.
Y/N.
She was typing something on her laptop, an iced latte beside her, completely unaware that he had walked in. There was only one empty chair left in the entire café. The one across from her.
Anton hesitated for a second. Then walked over.
“Mind if I sit here?”
Y/N looked up from her screen.
A hint of surprise crossed her face before she smiled. “Oh.”
“Hi.”
She glanced around the crowded café before looking back at him. “Go ahead.”
“I don’t think you’ll find another seat.”
Anton placed his backpack beside the chair before sitting down. “Thanks.”
“No problem.”
For a brief moment, neither of them said anything.
The café buzzed with conversation around them.
Someone near the counter called out another order.
A group of freshmen squeezed around a table that was clearly too small for all of them.
Y/N closed her laptop halfway. “So…”
Anton looked up. “So.”
“How’s your first actual day?”
He let out a quiet laugh. “So far?”
“I’ve only gotten lost once.”
“Only once?”
“I’d call that a success.”
She smiled. “That’s actually impressive.”
“I had a campus map.”
“…That explains it.”
“I still took the wrong staircase.”
“I was wondering when the catch would come.”
Anton chuckled. “What about you?”
“Same schedule as always?”
Y/N nodded. “Pretty much.”
“I forgot how exhausting the first day feels.”
“Already?”
“We’ve only had one lecture.”
“And I’m already thinking about going home.”
“I respect the honesty.”
A barista walked over and placed Anton’s iced americano on the table.
“Americano for Anton.”
“Thank you.”
He wrapped his hand around the cup before taking his first sip.
His eyes drifted toward the iced latte sitting beside Y/N’s laptop.
“Iced latte?”
Y/N glanced down at her drink. “Yeah.”
“Good choice.”
She raised an eyebrow. “You sound surprised.”
“Not surprised.” He smiled.
“I just thought…”
“…after the amount of time I spent choosing fried chicken…”
“…you’d be the type to spend five minutes deciding on coffee too.”
Y/N laughed. “I already know what I like.”
“Fair.”
She nodded toward his americano. “See?”
“You ordered in under thirty seconds today.”
“I’m learning.”
“Don’t get too confident.”
“Why?”
“You still chose original.”
Anton let out a dramatic sigh. “I’m never escaping that, am I?”
“Probably not.”
He laughed, shaking his head.
“I walked right into that one.”
“You really did.”
For a moment, they simply sat there, sipping their coffee while the conversations around them blended into the familiar buzz of the café.
It was quiet.
Comfortable.
Neither of them felt the need to fill every silence.

The excitement of a new semester never lasted long enough to survive the first alarm. By nine o’clock, Seoul National University was already alive. Students hurried across campus with iced coffees in hand, backpacks slung over one shoulder, and timetables pulled up on their phones as they searched for classrooms they had somehow forgotten over the summer.
Some walked alone.
Others reunited with classmates they hadn’t seen since finals.
Everywhere Y/N looked…
Someone was either running late or pretending they weren’t.
“I forgot how busy campus gets,” Y/N said, taking a sip of her iced latte.
Karina looked up from her phone.
“Give it a week.”
“Half the students will stop showing up.”
Giselle gasped dramatically. “You can’t expose me like that.”
Y/N looked at her. “So you’re planning on skipping already?”
“I’m planning on considering it.”
“That’s somehow worse.”
Winter adjusted the strap of her backpack. “You say that every semester.”
“And every semester I attend.”
“Barely,” Karina replied.
“I still attend.”
NingNing let out an exaggerated yawn. “I’ve decided eight a.m. classes shouldn’t exist.”
Y/N frowned. “You don’t even have an eight a.m.”
“…That’s not the point.”
“It literally is.”
“I support the message.”
Everyone laughed.
A few steps ahead, Sungchan stretched his arms above his head.
“I actually missed this.”
Y/N looked at him. “The walking?”
“The campus.”
“The chaos.”
“The complaining.”
Karina smiled. “You’ve been back for a week.”
“I know.”
“I still missed it.”
Wonbin finally spoke. “I missed the coffee.”
“Now that’s believable,” Y/N replied.
The group continued walking through the center of campus, naturally weaving around students heading in every direction.
Somewhere nearby, the student council was handing out maps to confused freshmen.
A club had already started recruiting members.
Someone else was trying to convince passing students to sign up for a volunteer program.
“…They’re fast,” Giselle muttered.
“It’s the first day,” Karina replied.
“They have to be.”
The familiar crossroads in the middle of campus slowly came into view.
Like every semester…
This was where they split up.
Karina glanced at her timetable.
“Business.” She pointed toward the building on the left.
Sungchan nodded. “That’s us.”
Winter looked toward another path.
“I’ve got Design.”
NingNing sighed dramatically.
“And I’m suffering alone.”
“You’ll live,” Y/N said.
“I always do.”
Wonbin adjusted the strap of his backpack.
“I should get going.”
“The music building’s on the other side.”
“See you at lunch?” Giselle asked.
“As long as NingNing doesn’t choose the place,” Y/N replied.
“I have great taste!”
“You have expensive taste.”
“Details.”
Before anyone could continue—
“Sungchan!”
The voice came from somewhere behind them.
Sungchan turned around. A familiar figure jogged across the courtyard, slowing to a stop once he reached the group.
Anton.
He adjusted the strap of his backpack before letting out a small breath.
“Sorry..The freshman orientation took longer than I thought.”
Sungchan chuckled. “I figured.”
“They finally let you escape?”
“Barely.”
That earned a laugh.
Only then did Anton look at everyone else.
“Morning.”
“Morning,” Karina greeted with a smile.
“Morning,” Y/N echoed.
“How was orientation?” Giselle asked.
Anton smiled awkwardly. “A lot of information.”
“I think I forgot half of it already.”
NingNing nodded sympathetically.
“Congratulations.”
“You’re officially a freshman.”
Anton laughed. “Good to know.”
Wonbin glanced toward the music building before checking the time on his phone. “We should head over.”
Anton looked at his own timetable. “…Right.”
He nodded once.
“See you guys later.”
“See you,” Sungchan replied.
“Good luck,” Y/N added.
Anton smiled. “Thanks.”
With that, he and Wonbin headed across the courtyard toward the Music Complex.
The others watched them disappear into the crowd before turning toward the Business building.
Sungchan smiled to himself. “He seems to be settling in.”
Y/N nodded. “So far.”
Karina looked between the two of them. “You sound surprised.”
“I’m just saying…” Y/N adjusted her bag on her shoulder. “It’s only been a weekend.”
Sungchan laughed quietly. “Give him a week.”
“Come on.. We’re going to be late.” Y/N said.
Sungchan groaned dramatically. “It’s the first day.”
“Exactly.”
“Let’s try not to make a bad impression.”
Together, the three of them disappeared into the growing crowd of students.
By the time they stepped out of the restaurant, the air felt cooler than before. Between shared bottles of soju, endless rounds of barbecue and NingNing insisting that “one more round” meant at least three more, everyone was in a noticeably better mood.
Or, in Karina’s word‘s “…Slightly concerning.”
“We’re fine,” Giselle said confidently.
“You just tried to unlock the restaurant with your student ID,” Karina replied.
“…That never happened.” Giselle laughed.
“It literally happened thirty seconds ago.”
NingNing threw an arm around Y/N’s shoulders.
“We’re just warming up!”
“That’s what pre-gaming is for,” Sungchan explained.
Wonbin quietly opened the taxi door.
“Let’s go before you order another bottle.”
The music reached them before they even stepped inside.
Heavy bass echoed through the student union building, blending with laughter and hundreds of overlapping conversations spilling out into the warm September night.
Fairy lights hung across the entrance.
Student organization banners decorated the walls.
Somewhere inside, someone cheered loud enough for the entire campus to hear.
“…We’re definitely late.”
Karina glanced at the time on her phone.
10:44 PM.
NingNing slipped her arm around Y/N’s shoulders with a grin.
“We’re fashionably late.”
“We’re just late,” Karina corrected.
“We’re making an entrance.”
“We’re making Sungchan look responsible.”
“Impossible,” Giselle laughed.
Sungchan looked offended.
“I’ve been responsible all evening.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow.
“You showed up late to the café three days ago and today.”
“That was different.”
“It wasn’t.”
Wonbin quietly held the entrance door open.
“Are we going in?”
No one argued.
The moment they stepped inside, the noise doubled. Students filled every corner of the hall. Some danced near the DJ booth.
Others crowded around folding tables stacked with snacks and drinks.
Freshmen nervously introduced themselves to strangers while older students greeted each other like they’d never been apart.
It felt like the semester hadn’t even started yet.
Five steps.
That was all they managed.
“There they are!” Shotaro spotted them first.
He pointed dramatically across the room.
“I told you they’d be late.”
Sohee looked up from the plastic cup in his hand.
“…Only about two and a half hours.”
“I’d call that an improvement,” Eunseok added.
Sungchan laughed.
“Be nice.”
“Were you?” Seunghan asked.
“You literally told us eight o’clock.”
“I changed my mind.”
“We noticed.”
NingNing raised a finger.
“In our defense…”
Everyone looked at her.
“…The hotpot was really good.”
A beat of silence.
Then Sohee nodded. “…Fair.”
“I knew you’d understand.”
“I didn’t say I approved.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Laughter spread through both groups almost instantly.
Y/N looked around.
All of the boy‘s are already there.
Shotaro.
Eunseok.
Sohee.
Seunghan.
And…
One unfamiliar face.
He stood quietly beside Shotaro, listening more than talking.
A plastic cup rested loosely in one hand.
Every now and then he smiled at whatever the others were saying.
Not awkward.
Just…
Observing.
Sungchan noticed Y/N’s gaze before looking over himself. “Oh There you are.”
He motioned for the boy to come closer.
The conversation around them naturally quieted.
Anton stepped forward.
Sungchan smiled.
“Guys.”
“This is the freshman I told you about.”
He lightly patted Anton’s shoulder.
“Anton.”
Anton offered a polite smile.
“Hi.”
Karina smiled first.
‘‘Nice to meet you, I‘m Karina.‘‘
“Giselle.”
“NingNing.”
“Minjeong.”
Each introduction was met with a small nod and a quiet “Nice to meet you.”
Then Anton turned toward Wonbin.
A smile immediately appeared on both their faces.
“Good to see you again.”
“You too.”
“It’s been a while.”
“It has.”
That was all.
No explanation was needed.
Sungchan had expected exactly that.
Finally…
Anton looked toward the last person standing beside Wonbin.
“I’m Y/N.” she smiled.
Anton returned the smile before gently shaking her hand.
“Anton.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“You too.”
The handshake lasted barely a second.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing unforgettable.
Just…
A first meeting.
Exactly the kind people usually forgot after a crowded university party.
“So…” Giselle suddenly clapped her hands together.
“Anton.” Anton looked at her.
“Question.”
“…Should I be worried?”
“Probably.”
Karina sighed. “Giselle.”
“What?” she asked.
“You don’t interrogate people within thirty seconds.”
“I’m getting to know him.”
“You sound like you’re conducting an interview.”
“I prefer the term investigation.”
Anton laughed quietly. “I’ll do my best.”
“There!” Giselle pointed at him triumphantly.
“I already like him.”
“You like everyone,” Y/N replied.
“Not true.”
“Name one person you don’t.”
Giselle opened her mouth. “…Give me a minute.”
“I rest my case.” Y/N said.
Another round of laughter followed.
“So…” Giselle began again.
She folded her arms dramatically. “Favorite food.”
Anton blinked. “…That’s the question?”
“It’s a very important question.”
“…Ramen?”
NingNing gasped. “Wrong answer.”
Anton looked genuinely concerned. “…There was a correct one?”
“There is now.”
“Hotpot.”
“So that’s why everyone disappeared for two hours,” Anton laughed.
“You’ll understand one day,” NingNing promised.
“I believe her,” Anton replied.
That earned him an approving nod.
“I like him,” NingNing declared.
“So quickly?” Sohee asked.
“He likes hotpot.”
“Fair enough.”
Y/N watched the exchange unfold with an amused smile. Anton fit into the conversation surprisingly easily. Not because he talked the most. But because he never seemed uncomfortable joining in. For someone attending his first university party, he looked far more relaxed than she’d expected.
Maybe Sungchan had been right.
Maybe he really would get along with everyone.
The introductions dissolved into smaller conversations almost immediately.
The louder the music got, the more the group naturally scattered.
NingNing disappeared first. “Drinks.”
“Again?” Karina asked.
NingNing looked offended. “Hydration.”
“That’s not water.”
“It has liquid in it.”
“That’s not how hydration works.”
Giselle was gone right after. Pulled toward the dance floor by some girl she recognized from last semester.
“Don’t die without me!” she yelled over her shoulder.
“No promises!” NingNing shouted back.
Karina sighed. “Every semester.”
“At least she’s consistent,” Winter said.
Shotaro dragged Sohee and Seunghan toward one of the game tables.
Eunseok followed without complaint.
Sungchan was immediately cornered by two business majors he apparently knew.
Which left…
Y/N.
Anton.
Wonbin.
And Winter.
For about ten seconds.
Then Winter looked at her phone. “I’m getting another drink.”
Wonbin nodded. “I’ll come.”
And just like that…
They were gone too.
Y/N blinked. “…Traitors.”
“They left fast.” Anton laughed.
“Yeah.”
“They do that.”
For a second, neither of them said anything.
Not awkward.
Just quiet.
Comfortable enough.
Anton glanced around the room.
“This is bigger than I expected.”
“The welcome party?”
He nodded. “I thought it’d be smaller.”
“This is small.” Y/N laughed.
Anton looked at her. “…Seriously?”
“You should see midterms after-parties.”
He looked mildly concerned. “That sounds dangerous.”
“It usually is.” she said.
That made him laugh.
And for the first time that nigh he looked a little less nervous.
They ended up at the drinks table.
Y/N poured herself another drink.
Anton stood beside her, leaning lightly against the table.
“So…” He glanced at her. “Does Sungchan always disappear this fast?”
Y/N smiled into her cup. “Pretty much.”
“He told me he’d introduce me to everyone.”
“He did.”
“For like thirty seconds.”
“That counts.”
Anton laughed. “…I guess.”
A beat passed.
Then—
“Business?”
Y/N looked at him.
“Hm?”
“Your major.”
She blinked.
“How did you know?”
Anton shrugged. “Lucky guess.”
Y/N narrowed her eyes. “That wasn’t a lucky guess.”
He smiled. “Sungchan talks…like a lot.”
“Oh.”That made sense.
“Hopefully only good things.”
Anton tilted his head. “…Mostly.”
Y/N laughed. “Mostly?”
“He said you’re scary when you’re hungry.”
She stared at him. “That’s NingNing.”
Anton paused. “…That makes way more sense.”
Y/N laughed harder this time. And Anton smiled. For a brief moment, they simply watched the party around them.
Someone near the speakers had already started dancing on a chair. Karina looked seconds away from stopping them.
Anton reached for a soda while Y/N picked up another drink. Just as she turned.
Someone stumbled backwards into her. The plastic cup slipped from her hand.
“Oh”
Before it could hit the floor, another hand caught it. A few drops splashed over the rim.But the drink stayed exactly where it belonged. Anton looked down at the cup still in his hand.
“…That was close.”
Y/N blinked.
Then laughed. “I almost wore that.”
He handed the cup back.
“I figured your outfit deserved better.”
She accepted it with a grin.
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” A beat of silence.
Then Anton looked toward the dance floor again. “Would your friend have been mad?”
Y/N followed his gaze. Giselle was currently trying to convince the DJ to change the song.
“She would’ve acted like it was a national emergency.” Anton watched the scene for another second. “…Yeah I believe that.”
Y/N laughed. “She’s dramatic.”
“I noticed.”
“But she’s fun.”
“She is.”
Another comfortable silence settled between them.
Not awkward.
Just…
Easy.
Before either of them could continue the conversation—
A loud voice suddenly cut through the music.
“BEER PONG!”
Half the room turned toward the center of the hall, where two long tables had already been set up.
Shotaro clapped his hands together. “We need one more team!”
Students immediately started gathering around the tables, arguing over rules before the game had even begun.
NingNing looked around the room.
Then…
Her eyes landed on Y/N.
A slow grin spread across her face.
“Oh.”
Y/N noticed immediately. “…No.”
“Oh, yes.”
“NingNing.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“NingNing.”
Without another word, NingNing pointed dramatically across the room.
“Y/N!”
Every head turned.
Y/N took a step back. “Absolutely not.”
“You’re playing.”
“I literally never agreed to that.”
“You don’t have to.”
“That’s… not how consent works.”
“It is tonight.”
Before Y/N could protest again—
Sohee looked among the crowd before pointing at Anton.
“Anton.”
Anton blinked. “…Me?”
“Yep.”
“I’ve never played before.”
“Perfect.”
“I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
“It’ll be fine,” Shotaro said confidently.
“It definitely won’t,” Karina muttered.
Sohee looked between Anton and Y/N.
“We’ve got our last team.”
Y/N stared at him. “…Excuse me?”
Anton looked just as confused. “I don’t even know the rules.”
“You’ll learn,” Sungchan said with a grin.
“Probably the hard way.”
Giselle clapped excitedly. “Oh, this is going to be fun.”
Y/N looked at Anton.
He rubbed the back of his neck before laughing quietly. “…Guess we’re teammates.”
She sighed dramatically. “…Guess we are.”
NingNing clapped excitedly. “See? Problem solved.”
“That wasn’t the problem,” Y/N muttered.
Around them, students hurried to claim spots around the tables, cheering before the first ball had even been thrown.
Anton glanced at Y/N with an amused smile.
“So…Any last-minute advice?”
She smiled. “Try not to embarrass us.”
He laughed. “No promises.”

The reservation had been under Karina’s name. Which meant everyone else was, unsurprisingly, late.
Everyone except Karina.
She was already waiting outside the restaurant when two familiar figures appeared at the end of the street. Wonbin and Y/N. Wonbin looked exactly the way everyone expected him to. Simple black shirt.
Dark jeans. Hands in his pockets.
Y/N…
Didn’t.
She had traded her usual oversized hoodie for a fitted top and a black mini skirt, her hair neatly styled, and knee-high boots catching the evening lights.
Nothing over the top.
Just…
Different.
Karina blinked once. “…Well.”
Before she could say anything else—
“OH MY GOD.” Giselle had just rounded the corner. She stopped walking entirely.
The last week of summer always felt different. Not because the weather changed. Not because the days suddenly became shorter.
But because Seoul National University slowly came back to life.
Students rolled their suitcases across campus, parents carried cardboard boxes into dorm buildings, and every café surrounding the university was filled with familiar faces returning after months apart.
It was loud.
Busy.
Comforting.
Y/N had always loved this time of year. Not because she missed lectures. Definitely not because she missed assignments. And certainly not because she missed group projects.
She simply missed the feeling that life was starting again. The café just outside SNU’s main gate hadn’t changed at all.
The little bell above the entrance chimed softly as she stepped inside, followed by the familiar aroma of coffee beans, warm bread, and vanilla.
Home.
Well…
As close to home as a café could feel.
Her eyes wandered through the room until they landed on the corner table beside the window.
As expected.
Karina was already there.
Of course she was.
Across from her sat Wonbin, quietly reading a novel while absentmindedly stirring the melting ice in his americano.
Y/N smiled to herself.
Some things never changed.
“You’re early.” Karina looked up from her laptop as Y/N approached.
“So are you.”
“I always am.”
“I know.”
Y/N slipped her bag from her shoulder before dropping into the chair beside Wonbin.
He looked up from his book for exactly one second.
“Morning.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow.
“It’s eleven.”
Wonbin didn’t even blink.
“Still morning.”
Karina let out a quiet laugh.
“I’ve learned not to argue with him anymore.”
“You used to?”
“For about three weeks.”
“And then?”
“I realized he always thinks he’s right.”
Wonbin calmly turned another page.
“I usually am.”
“There it is,” Karina sighed.
“The confidence.”
“The truth.” he said.
Y/N laughed, shaking her head.
“I’ve missed you guys.”
Karina smiled. “We know.”
Wonbin looked over the top of his book.
“You came back two days early.”
“…I was bored.”
“You missed us.”
“I missed coffee.”
“Liar.” Y/N pointed a finger at Karina.
“I will neither confirm nor deny that statement.”
Karina closed her laptop. “I ordered your usual.”
Y/N looked at the iced latte waiting in front of her.
“You ordered before I got here?”
“You’ve had the same order since first year.”
“…Fair.” she sighed “I appreciate you.”
“You say that every time.”
“I mean it every time.”
Before Y/N could take her first sip—
Someone dramatically slid into the chair beside her.
“I heard my favorite people were talking about me.”
Without looking up, Y/N replied, “No one was talking about you.”
“I know.” Giselle smiled proudly. “I just wanted a dramatic entrance.”
Wonbin slowly lowered his book. “It wasn’t very dramatic.”
Giselle gasped. “…Excuse me?”
“It lacked commitment.” he said.
Karina hid a smile behind her coffee cup.
Y/N bit the inside of her cheek, trying not to laugh.
“You guys are unbelievable.”
“No,” Wonbin corrected calmly. “You’re dramatic.”
“I’ve been attacked twice in under thirty seconds.”
“You’ll survive.”
“I don’t know…” Giselle dramatically placed a hand over her heart.
“I’m feeling incredibly unsupported.”
Y/N leaned back in her chair. “That’s because you’re looking for support in the wrong place.”
“You’re all terrible friends.”
Karina tilted her head. “We’ve known you since high school.”
“Exactly.”
“So we know you’re dramatic.”
“…I hate that you use our history against me.”
Y/N reached for her coffee. Before she could take a sip, Giselle casually reached for it too.
Without even looking, Y/N slapped her hand away.
“Absolutely not.”
“Ow!”
Karina didn’t even look up from her laptop. “You never learn.”
“I was just testing my luck.”
“You’ve been testing it for years.”
“And one day it’ll work.”
“It won’t.”
Just then, another voice interrupted.
“…It won’t.”
Everyone turned as Winter approached the table, sketchbook tucked beneath one arm and an iced americano already in her hand.
She set her coffee down before taking the empty seat beside Karina.
“Morning.”
Giselle rubbed the back of her hand dramatically.
“I don’t understand why you keep doing that.”
“Just because I can,” Y/N replied.
Winter glanced between the two of them.
“…I would’ve done the same.”
Giselle gasped. “You’re all against me.”
“Correct,” Karina said.
For the first time that morning…
Even Wonbin smiled.
“You laughed!” Giselle immediately pointed at him.
“I saw it!”
“I know.”
“I witnessed a historical event.”
“I regret it already.” The table dissolved into laughter. For a moment, it felt like summer had never happened. Like they’d never spent months apart. Like this little corner of the café had simply been waiting for them to come back.
Then Y/N looked around the table.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
…
Two empty chairs remained.
Y/N frowned. “Ning?”
Karina unlocked her phone and glanced at the latest messages. “She texted twenty minutes ago.”
Y/N already knew exactly what it would say.
“Let me guess…” Karina turned the screen around.
5 mins!! 🏃♀️💨 That’s what NingNing texted twenty minutes ago.
Y/N snorted. “Classic.”
“I still don’t understand how five minutes means half an hour to her,” Giselle sighed.
Wonbin quietly closed his book. “She’s buying food.”
“I’m betting pastries,” Giselle said immediately.
Winter took another sip of her americano.
“Three bags.”
Everyone looked at her. “…Three?”
Winter simply shrugged. “I have a feeling.”
Karina smiled. “I believe her.”
“You always believe her,” Y/N replied.
“Because she’s usually right.”
“That’s true,” Giselle admitted.
Y/N looked toward the final empty chair.
“And where’s Sungchan?”
Karina checked another notification.
“He texted too.”
“What did he say?”
‘‘That he‘s on his way.‘‘
Silence.
Then Y/N sighed dramatically. “So… He hasn’t left yet.”
Karina couldn’t even argue. “…Probably.”
“I’ll give him another thirty minutes,” Giselle said.
“Twenty-five,” Karina guessed.
Wonbin looked out the café window. “Forty.”
Y/N laughed. “Forty?”
“He likes breaking his own records.”
“I swear,” Y/N muttered, “if he somehow arrives after NingNing…”
She leaned back in her chair. “I’m revoking his best friend privileges.”
“You’ve said that every semester,” Karina reminded her.
“And every semester I forgive him.”
“Exactly.”
“Unfortunately.”
The conversation drifted to classes instead.
Karina had already color-coded her timetable.
Winter somehow knew the names of three professors she’d never even met.
Giselle complained about having an 8 a.m. lecture.
“I don’t understand why universities believe people can learn before noon.”
“You won’t be awake before noon anyway,” Y/N replied.
“That’s beside the point.”
“It is literally the point.”
“I’m choosing to ignore your negativity.”
“You call facts negativity a lot.”
“It’s called self-care.”
“It’s called denial.”
Before Giselle could come up with another dramatic response—
The café door burst open.
“I MADE IT!”
Half the café turned to stare.
The other half didn’t even bother anymore.
NingNing stood in the doorway, slightly out of breath, balancing three paper bags on one arm and two iced drinks in the other.
Y/N slowly looked at the clock. “…Twenty-six minutes.”
“I know.” NingNing said.
“You texted us twenty-one minutes ago.”
“I know.”
“You said you were five minutes away.”
“I was.”
“For twenty-one minutes?”
“There was a bakery.”
Silence.
Karina pinched the bridge of her nose. “…Of course there was.”
NingNing beamed as she reached the table.
“I brought pastries!”
Giselle immediately leaned forward. “For us?”
“No.‘‘
Everybody went silent again.
“They’re all mine.” she said.
Y/N blinked. “You bought three bags…”
“Yes.”
“…For yourself.”
“Yes.”
Wonbin looked at the mountain of pastries before taking a slow sip of his americano.
“I respect the commitment.”
NingNing smiled proudly. “Thank you.”
Winter quietly pointed at the bags. “I told you.”
Everyone turned to her. “You actually guessed three bags.”
“I know.”
Giselle folded her arms dramatically. “I got excited for nothing.”
“I never said they were for you.”
“You implied it.”
“I really didn’t.”
Laughter filled the table once again.
Y/N watched NingNing happily unwrap a croissant before smiling to herself.
“Congratulations.”
NingNing looked up.
“For what?”
“You’re officially not the latest.”
“…Wait.”
Her eyes wandered around the table.
One chair was still empty.
“…Sungchan?”
Karina simply nodded. “Sungchan.”
NingNing laughed. “Oh, thank God.”
“You’re celebrating?”
“I finally lost the title.”
“You were proud of it?”
“No…Maybe a little.”
Another round of laughter echoed through the café.
Outside, students continued walking past the windows.
Inside…
Everything felt exactly the way it always had.
Comfortable.
Familiar.
Like home.
They just needed one more person to complete the picture.
—
“If he reaches an hour, I’m leaving.”
As if the universe had heard her…
The bell above the café door rang once more.
A familiar voice echoed through the room.
“Sorry I’m late.” Sungchan said.
Every single person looked up.
Sungchan stood in the doorway, slightly out of breath, one hand still holding his phone.
No one answered.
Instead…
Giselle checked the time. Then looked at everyone else.
“Thirty-four minutes.”
Sungchan smiled sheepishly. “…Could’ve been worse.”
“It usually is,” Y/N replied.
He laughed as he pulled out the last empty chair.
“Fair enough.”
Sungchan laughed softly before glancing at his phone again. He laughed softly to himself before locking it without replying. None of them noticed the unread message still sitting at the top of Sungchan’s phone. The afternoon passed faster than any of them expected.
Half-empty coffee cups were replaced with glasses of lemonade. The pastries NingNing had refused to share somehow ended up disappearing anyway.
No one admitted to taking them.
“…It was Giselle,” Winter said.
“It was not!”
“It was.”
“It literally wasn’t.”
Wonbin looked up from his phone. “You have powdered sugar on your sleeve.”
Giselle froze. “…That’s circumstantial evidence.”
“It really isn’t,” Karina laughed.
Hours later, the café had started to empty.
The sun hung lower in the sky, casting warm golden light through the large windows.
Y/N leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms above her head. “I almost forgot classes start next week.”
“Don’t remind me,” NingNing groaned.
“I’ve successfully ignored every email the university has sent.”
“…That’s concerning,” Karina replied.
“It’s called protecting my peace.”
“It’s called being irresponsible.”
“Tomato, tomahto.”
Sungchan chuckled before glancing at his phone again. A small shift in his expression. A soft laugh slipped out before he locked it without replying.
Y/N noticed. “You’ve been on your phone a lot today.”
“Hm?”
“You smiled.”
“So?”
“You only smile like that when you’re hiding something.”

Has a habit of smiling his way out of awkward situations. It always works tho.
