I don’t think ‘the American’ that the Russians have is Hopper. I think it’s Brenner.

The song playing at the end of episode 8 is a cover of Heroes by David Bowie. You might think this song is familiar, and you’d be right-the same cover played during the scene where Fake!Will’s body was found. Where was Real!Will? In the upside down. I think this is a very clear hint that Hopper is currently trapped in the upside down.

All we know about Brenner was that he was last seen being attacked by the Demogorgon, and that one of his former colleagues said he was still alive. I think the Russians found Brenner in a bad state with the Demogorgon when they opened the gate and took him prisoner. They kept him prisoner rather than letting him die, knowing that he was very knowledgeable about the Upside Down, but also knowing that if they set him free he would go back to America and tell the government about what the Russians are doing.
