to elaborate on my very correct assessment of the gang's involvement in crypto:
dennis absolutely does not know what cryptocurrency is. the misconception that dennis would know what crypto is can be traced to the undeniable fact that dennis would pretend to know what crypto is, and he could easily convince the gang that he knows what he's talking about. he, however, does not. dennis would also express scorn for the whole concept and that its beneath him, which is how he would justify not investing in crypto.
dee knows what cryptocurrency is, but she'd buy into all the hype and be overly evangelistic about it, so it's very likely that she would get scammed. at first her investments would pay off, giving her ego a massive boost and pushing dennis to the edge. her success would fuel dennis' vocal disdain for crypto. eventually she'd get too confident and lose it all, and dennis would gleefully take this as vindication.
mac follows dennis' lead to some extent, but he'd get into NFTs as a side hustle once he finds out he can mint his own. he'd use charlie's art and begin calling himself charlie's agent. a few might sell, but he'd quickly go into debt.
charlie isn't a crypto guy; he's much more patient and less interested in getting rich quick relative to the others. he's forced to know about crypto because mac needs his help with the technical side of things, and also because mac and dee talk about it constantly, so he learns via osmosis. the thing about charlie is that he loves a passion project and will invest his hard-earned coins if something truly grabs him, like with kitten mittons TM and fight milkāthings that are ~real~. because of this, he'd be generally confused about the whole nft thing and why anyone would pay for something they can download for free.
unlike dennis, charlie openly voices his confusion and frequently asks questions that mac can't actually answer. mac will dismiss this as charlie not being enlightened, but charlie technically has a better understanding of nfts because digital scarcity is very much artificial, and the demand relies on hype rather than actual value. charlie simply sees through this due to his intuitive grasp of the Marxian labor theory of value.
also, though it hardly needs to be said, frank is 100% in on crypto. one thing of note is that he buys nfts for aesthetic reasons. he's mostly into erotic furry shit.
So i got SOME things wrong but my points about dennis stand and that charlie is the only one who understands investing. And I maintain that charlie has an intuitive grasp of the Marxian labor theory of value
I donāt know. Should we call Mom?

eldest daughter syndrome and gifted kid syndrome are some great examples of phrases used to talk about specific kinds of trauma that the internet has taken and turned into "boo hoo these people arent special anymore so theyre lashing out!!" it was never about that you fucking cunts
eldest daughter sydrome is about a very specific trauma that comes with being expected to parent for younger siblings and even your parents as a literal child and how badly it fucks you and your perception of yourself and what you're capable of doing up. gifted kid syndrome is about how a "smart" label is slapped onto kids at a horribly young age and then they are repeatedly denied help forced to do more and more work never taught socialization or study skills and then berated and treated like a disappointment when they're human beings instead of little intelligence machines. god.
i was fucking right about this honestly. most phrases like this are about certain kinds of trauma people have faced not about some kind of fucking superiority complex
anyway yes. hi i will never not be upset about how david mandel ruined dan egan re: taking a character extremely at face-value thus completely missing the point of what theyāre supposed to represent
in s1-4 veep u r presented with the stereotypical sleazy privileged good looking white man who IS smart enough to be competent at his job but like. heās way too in over his head and underestimates everyone around him/overestimates how smart he is, and u donāt get to see characters like that fail often but he like .. gets fired once a season LMAO. he has a mental breakdown when heās made campaign manager,Ā he sleeps around a lot but itās for power, heās the one who dumps amy but thenĀ itās very clear throughout their interactions that heās more into her than she is into him, heās one of the few characters who is actually like wait what the fuck this isnāt okay when he witnesses jonah get saād,Ā vs most others who laughed it off/made awful jokes about it, he has NO foresight like he wants power but then doesnāt know what to do once heās presented with it. he is still very much an awful awful person obviously but heās well-writtenĀ
but then in s5-7 itās like ⦠heās not a subversion or a critique of the womanizing pretty white man stereotype he very much embodies that stereotype. hes extremely gross around most women he shares screentime with, amy becomes the one whoās obsessed with him which fucks up their dynamic, he ends up becoming a realtor (i think ??) and is married to someone whoās like half his age in the finale flash forwardĀ
one thing thatās super obvious that i can think of off the top of my head rnĀ that can sum this up is s3 dan saying he loves older women vs s6 dan being like yeah i dont sleep with anyone over 30 or smth like that

The chances of Tom, Greg and Willa forming a friend group are slimā¦..but never zeroā¦
thinking about romanās tendency to walk away whenever someone tries to talk to him about his issues, and thinking about how caroline avoids kendall when he wants to confide in her. thinking about roman wanting to call his mother after logan had the stroke and thinking about how the way he seeks comfort is tangible ā he wants something that smells like his father, something he can hold. thinking about how, for all his issues with sex, roman is often casually physically affectionate (notably he strokes/plays with islaās, graceās, and tabithaās hair). thinking about how shivās taunt that roman canāt āhide under the covers with mommyā reads like itās something heās heard many times before. thinking about how a little boy who seeks physical comfort but is unwilling to discuss why heās upset is the perfect child for caroline to have: she doesnāt need to talk to him, she just needs to pat his cheek and stroke his hair until he stops crying. thinking about how roman ā desperate for any scrap of affection ā would settle for that even if he did want to talk about it.

I listened to the first three episodes of the sunny podcast and I donāt think I learned anything new about the show so far. However it has been very informative as to rcgās unresolved trauma
its such a good episode but i have one issue with the gang buys a roller rink. which is dee. i'm choosing to ignore the implication that her head injury caused a personality shift because it simply does not vibe w me. i really love how her character (d)evolves over the course of the show from ~token girl sweet dee~ into the deeply angry and resentful character she is today, which reads to me like a meaningful personality shift over time. i know s1 dee is like that because rcg didn't know what to do with her, but tbh the evolution in kaitlins performance in the early seasons still feels true to the character. like the relatively thin writing for s1 sweet dee genuinely resonates with her struggle to perform femininity throughout the show while trying to fit in with the guys and her gradual disillusionment with womanhood in general!! and how her tendency to cynically weaponize her (white) womanhood reveals itself!!!!
again, love the eppy. so I am choosing to interpret sweet dee's Sweetness in this episode as a learned performance and her personality shift as a lapse in that performance that unleashes a repressed self rather than a symptom of a traumatic brain injury, which imo doesn't even conflict with the text<3 glad thats settled
#i justified it the exact same way in my head#probably not the writersā intentions but itās absolutely consistent with past canon to interpret it as not being a head injury that#provoked her shift in personality#but rather exposing that dee had aggressive tendencies that she used to mask under a facade#and they used to only come out when she was inconvenienced hurt triggered or upset or wtv#hence her lashing out after ruining her performance and being publicly humiliated#but because sheās spent her entire adult life surrounded by people equally as terrible as her#itās more convenient for her to be as unhinged and selfish as possible now#and as you said she knows how to weaponize her white womanhood and to capitalize off of it/exploit it#that sweetness can still come out when she thinks itās going to benefit her#but itās no longer her primary way of presenting herself#because it doesnāt benefit her within the gang or within the life she chooses to lead these days#also dee and the rest of the gang love the blame their failings on everything else in the world other than themselves#so rather than dee having to confront that the reason sheās never achieved her dreams in life is because she doesnāt have the abilities#she can decide her pseudo sweetness failed her/was useless and choose to approach life with her inner hostility and depravity#which has not gotten her any farther in being an actress and whatever else she thought she could have when she was younger#but it gives her temporary gratification and satisfaction to mask the misery she and the rest of the gang harbor inside themselves
exactly!!!! also i did the math and she would've been 22ish, so she's been out of her back brace for 2 years, and she's already set her roommate on fire by this point and dropped out of school, so to me 1998 sweet dee has kicked her performance of femininity into high gear in an attempt to bounce back.
also. i think this ep's version of dee is very much an exaggerated reflection of the guys' perception (both rcg and their characters tbh). she's not part of the gang at this point and isn't trying to be, so her status here is very much The Girl Who's Sometimes Around. i like to think that she would try to tag along with them in high school, peak of the "dennis' annoying sister" stage of her identity. it makes sense that she would return from college determined to lead her ideal life and convince everyone that she's ~blossomed into a lovely young woman~, so I can excuse the guys' uncharacteristic lack of bullying as them buying into her new persona up until she has her roller rink outburst
