They way they act with each other is extremely reminiscent to me of that kind of relationship, and this season, especially the finale, just completely cemented this to me as the intended read on their dynamic.

Like, this was the nail in the coffin for me. I genuinely don't think anything anyone says will convince me this is not the intended reading. I think emotional incest (incestuous abuse in general) deserves way more attention without people acting like it's just too gross to talk about (anyone who treats any form of trauma as radioactive, die forever), so frankly this is just going to stay my interpretation from here on out.

the chart was right. rick's happiness does not correlate with morty's. they both make the other worse (even if it's not intentional) and yet choose eachother every single time.

Then he’s thrust into this version with actually loving parents who cut Rick off. It was everything he ever wanted- then because Morty can’t have nice things they show their true nature of dependency of Morty, and Morty goads on healthy MIT!Rick straight back into an alcoholic to get what he wants. I don’t think Morty is anymore traumatized then he was, maybe slightly at the thought that he caused all the deaths in that particular family- Morty is like that by then end because the weight of everything he’s missed out on in a loving family.

Even in the ‘loving family’ he’d be screwed either way we saw mort wanting to escape. Jerry became the suedo-fill in for Rick and the adventures. And by then end when he’s back at home and things are “back to normal” his parents and sister continue the neglect he has been facing his whole life.

The one person who showed up and SAW him was Rick. He took him in the middle of the night to go on a bike ride, yes he was drunk but Morty got what he wanted-a father figure. “I’m your fucking dad! // I’m your son!” He’s not just his helper he’s clinging to the only attention he can get that’s resembles positivity, and the most unfortunate thing that that it happens to be Rick.

Morty has INSANE daddy issues, my poor boy is so desperate for a present parental figure, he'll cling to ANY present male figure, save this child, man :(

OK, SO Morty was gone for like weeks maybe?¿ months?? And no one cared? I mean I guess that kind of what the episode is about really, and it's not the first time it happened but still...

Well... we all knew that Morty entering the lives of a non-portal traveller family was just going to ruin them... the death scene was very brutal tho...

Also of course they can't actually be a nice family because why would they be? Poor Mort didn't get the chance to run away...

Also I felt so bad for Rick’s new wife because we all knew what was about to happen and also what's up with Morty saying Rick belonged to him more than her???

Morty has Rick's eyes canonically... I would be more focused on this if the episode hadn't destroyed my life.

Last but ABSOLUTELY NOT LEAST we have the ending. Okay, so when did we establish the fact that Rick is now Morty’s DAD?!? HELLO??? NO? PLEASE NO?

Like, that is the single worst more manipulative step that relationship could have escalated to??? Are we all actually insane. Have we lost our minds?

The scene from the ending parallels the first one ever of the show all the was back on season 1.... idk what to do with that...

Also, alcoholism... yey... is Morty gonna start drinking in the next season? I feel like they're really foreshadowing that.

Ok, I'm maybe gonna post more about this later, emphasis on the maybe, bc I am just in shock right now. But there is something else I kinda wanna talk about that I wish I didn't but has gotten more and more impossible to ignore...

Ya'll, after all is said and done, it's just a show. A comfort show for some maybe, but you shouldn't let it dictate your mental state. Specially because it is becoming more and more clear to me that this cycle of abuse does not end and the show will not have a happy ending.
