C S Pacat has really spoiled me for all other sex scenes in fiction because what do you mean the characterisation continues through the scene, it's well written, they bathe beforehand AND they use lube?? Absolute cinema.
What annoys me the most about Captive Prince discourse in the book fandom is that people don't know you need to read the whole trilogy to judge the first book. There is so much context missing from the first book because Laurent is so far removed from Damen there. They do not know each other, they aren't working together yet. The story is 99% told from Damen's perspective. In the first book, you do not know Laurent at all. You only know what Damen knows, and Damen knows shit fucking all.
If you're going to read Captive Prince, you need to commit to reading Prince's Gambit and King's Rising, no matter how you feel about Laurent in the first book. No matter how repellent the world they exist in is to you. The context you need is there but you need all three books!
It's also basically one big book. It thematically changes and varies ofc but it works really well as 1 book

and i just love how Damen is such a sub for Laurent. and it isnt even because of the horrible stuff he saw or endured in book 1 and 2 under Laurent's command. later on Jocaste confirms that Damen has always been a gentle lover. he always wants to make the person he is making love to feel cared for and cherished. him being a sub is all about him wanting to care for those he loves. which is such an honorable kingly thing to do.

Do you think Laurent went back and buried nicaise and gave him a beautiful resting place with a nice grave marker? Do you think he brings flowers out to nicaise’s grave and sits and talks to him sometimes?
As soon as Shane realized he was gay, that mf Locked In. He said, we need to get this relationship Sorted, hired a stylist, and showed up to All Stars weekend ready to lock down the best dicking he had ever gotten in his life. And it worked.
The answer to the question of if the Cranes are mentally ill or if the house is haunted being "two things can be true" is so interesting and clever to me. Olivia had migraines and episodes before they moved in, Luke has been abusing drugs as self medication for at the very least ptsd but also likely some level of OCD, the signs of depression are scattered around Nell's apartment.
But also ghosts are real, no question. Sure Nell never would have gone back to the house if she hadn't stopped taking her pills or if her therapist hadn't given her bad advice, but once she was there the ghosts were in full force. They literally put the noose around her neck, no metaphor. Just because the Cranes are mentally ill, that doesn't mean the ghosts didn't exist, all it did was make their job easier.

One of my favorite lines in the series, mainly because it’s really NOT what it seems at first glance. On it’s face, it seems like Laurent is behaving with jealousy and not wanting Damen to join in the coupling fire with the Vaskian women (and Halvik takes it as that without argument) but we already know from earlier scenes that Laurent does not actually give one flying fuck about Damen sleeping with other people (we literally see him encouraging it in other scenes, I think he even enjoys it, and that’s gonna be a fun kink for them to unpack later, but I digress…)
But no, it’s REALLY because Damen is injured. Damen’s first immediate thought when Halvik talks about the coupling fire is to think about how much his bruises hurt and how this is gonna suuuuuuck if he’s asked to fuck all those women again. Like, he’ll suck it up and do it if he has to, but he’s gonna get PUMMELED and he’s still gotta ride a horse tomorrow and cart around a bunch of prisoners, it’s gonna be the longest night of his life if he has to offer his “services” again…
But Laurent steps in. Because he knows Damen is injured from the battle earlier, and even though Damen could probably get through the orgy just fine, Laurent needs him rested and alert tomorrow in case anything goes wrong and maybe he’s a little worried about him too. And also Damen just proved that he’s willing to STAY with Laurent, he spent a whole day within riding distance of the border and could have escaped at any moment or arranged for Laurent’s capture, but he didn’t and Damen almost died for that choice (and also killed one of his own countrymen to protect Laurent but that’s still a touchy subject.)
So knowing all of that, knowing that he needs Damen at top fighting capacity, and knowing that his uncle’s trap is closing in and he has very little time left before Damen actually leaves for real (and ALSO not willing to disclose how injured Damen is because you DON’T show weakness even to your allies) Laurent puts on the act of a jealous master who won’t share his slave (because Laurent also does not really care what other people think of him, as long as he can twist whatever assumptions they have and get what he needs out if it, but I digress again…)
And Damen not only is NOT surprised, he is GRATEFUL because he knows instantly what Laurent did and why he did it (more or less) and the first thing he does when Laurent comes to the tent is to thank him for smoothly side-stepping the coupling fire and letting Damen rest and nurse his wounds out of sight. Even knowing Laurent had his own reasons for it and was not necessarily acting out of compassion or jealousy, the fact that he put so much thought into Damen’s comfort AT ALL is still world’s better than the way things were in Arles. It’s another little bit of ground gained, another tentative step in their budding relationship, another quiet moment for them to rethink each other’s motives and examine the growing trust between them. They’re coming to understand each other and attaining that Battle Couple Ride-Or-Die Symmetry and Damen even has a moment in the tent where he catches himself speaking to Laurent in the low and intimate way that a lover would and THE PINING, OH THE PINING, AND THEY HAVEN’T EVEN GOTTEN TO RAVENEL YET
Damen, experiencing character growth: Oh shit, I’ve just realized for the first time that my father was maybe a bloodthirsty warmonger who conquered a region and slaughtered innocent people just because he thought he had a right to, and I went along with it because I was a only a kid who wanted his attention and approval, and my father and all the adults around me used my ignorance and manipulated my need for love to further their own ambitions, but I’m just realizing for the first time how my involvement actually made things worse and cause irreparable harm for the people I fought and killed

The thing is, right. The thing that no one is talking about is that, why is no one talking about the obscene sunburn Laurent gets as soon as he first puts on Akielon clothing? We get hundreds of instances of people talking about how fair skinned he is, how delicate his skin is, how easily it shows the marks of any kind of restraint.
WHY IS NO ONE DISCUSSING THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM.
My man Laurent is fighting for his life while looking like a LOBSTER. He is outwitting enemy after enemy and longing for Damen the whole time but his true lust is for ALOE. He wins his kingdom while even his SCALP is peeling because that man wore his gold circlet, he wore his hard-won laurels, he NEVER put a HAT on his HEAD after he used that cap from Volo ONCE.
