Mr Harrington, the long-suffering physics teacher at Midtown School of Science and Technology was desperate to get the students involved in science to find their spark that they had demonstrated in their applications to the school. On his way home from a day like every other he saw the thing that could inspire anyone: Stark Industry’s tower headquarters if his students could see that they’d love it. That was how some of the students of Midtown ended up on a trip to Stark Tower.
Peter had despised the idea of going to the place of his internship ever since Mr Harrington had gleefully announced a few days ago. Ned had offered to skip the trip with him but Peter couldn’t allow him to do that for him he decided to suck it up but not without a game plan.
Plan To Infiltrate Stark Tower Step 1: Don’t tell anyone I’m going to be at the tower. Step 2: Get Friday on side to help with the plan. Step 3: Stay quiet and out of sight. Step 4: Have a great time (Step 4 was Ned’s contribution to the plan)
Peter sits next to Ned desperately trying to calm his nerves, distracting himself in any way possible. Debating what the turning point in Anikin’s life was in Star Wars, the lack of real physics in sci-fi films and Ned's new lego set he'd offered to let Peter help him build. To the misery of the two Flash had decided to stand behind them using the opportunity to taunt Peter about how his fake internship would be revealed.
“I bet you've never even been in the building.” “Mr Stark, would never hire someone like you.” “I can’t wait till Mr Harrington finds out you're a liar.”
Ned and Peter’s plan had been to ignore his complaining but due to Flash’s excessive volume MJ decided she’d had enough. “Were you not taught volume control?” After a moment of stunned silence Flash finally thought of a response. “Freak protecting her wimpy boyfriend.” “Sit down Mr Thompson or I’ll turn the bus around!” Mr Harrington bellowed down the aisle of the bus.
Flash slowly retracted back into his seat in shame and a sprinkling of embarrassment. The rest of the bus journey went without much more interruption.
A wave of awe came over every student in the bus as they reached Stark Tower, a giant against the New York skyline, was truly a sight to behold. Arriving through the glass doors and heading toward the main reception desk where Sally Dawson, head receptionist of Stark Industries sits, glasses on her nose stern faced expectantly awaiting the school trip.
“Erm… I’m Mr Harrington with Midtown School.” Breaking into an approachable smile Sally replies. “Yes, of course Mr Harrington lets get you all set up ready to go in.”
Towards the back of the crowd Peter shuffles around next to Ned uncomfortably. “What if the plan doesn’t work?” Peter mutters. “Dude you’ll be fine Friday is on your side she promised to help.” Ned tries to reassure his jittery friend that the plan will work.
“Here are your temporary passes, you must keep them on at all times if you take it off security will escort you out. Our head of security has a no nonsense and a no two pass policy.” said Sally in a serious tone. A collection of understanding nods came from the group as the severity of losing your pass sunk in.
“Here are your twenty passes.” stated Sally as she slid them across the desk. Mr Harrington placed on his pass and began handing out the passes individually to each student. “I think you're one short.” he calls out as he arrives at the final student.
Peter and Ned exchange worried looks as they know full well that Peter already had a pass which he should be using.
“Mr Harrington, you have a student pass on yours is still on the desk. It's a different colour as you are the group leader.” “Oh…” Mr Harrington realised as he sheepishly sulked over to Sally who handed him his pass.
Peter had never felt more relief in a moment as he was able to scan through the security barriers without any inconvenience.
Every Avenger has their own section that demonstrates the hero from a mock up of costume as the originals to be damaged beyond repair before being replaced they are creatures of habit, 3D models of their main weapon of choice and other pieces of tech that appeal to nosey tourists.
Most of the Iron Man suits along with most of the weapons were made from plastic that had been recycled as part of the Stark Sustainability Plan for a Brighter Future and also the fact they had learnt from wannabe villains hightech weapons needed to be kept behind stronger stuff than glass.
Peter and Ned wandered around the museum moving from display case to display case, MJ had taken to sketching the suits and Flash… Well Flash had his face pressed up against the glass of the Black Widow display.
“Got to hand it to the kid he thought of almost everything.” Clint whispers across to Nat as they lay in a vent above the museum aware of their target's enhanced hearing. “Shame Stark had a tantrum and installed the ‘DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF’ protocol otherwise his plan would have worked.”
Having been around the avengers for a long time Peter’s spider senses had become almost completely immune to their presence he is surprised to see Clint, who had carefully dropped into the corner of the room, wearing an employee uniform and blonde wig and strutting towards the group of unaware students.
As Clint coughed to get the attention of the group dotted around the museum he watched Peter’s eyes widen in shock as they made eye contact. “If you'd like to follow me I’ll take you through to the Stark exhibit.”
Having been so perplexed by the presence of Clint Peter missed his spider senses trying to alert him Flash was coming in hot from behind. “So Penis, when do we get to see your laboratory?” hissed Flash. “Intern laboratories are on the seventh floor and you will see them after lunch but if I hear that kind of language again unfortunately you will be removed from the tour.” fired Clint in Flash’s direction. Peter just stared in amazement of Clint with a little hint of joy at the gobsmacked look on Flash’s reddening face.
The canteen at Stark tower had to be an employee favourite under the mindset of a well fed and healthy employee equals a better working environment laid down by Pepper. Employee satisfaction had gone up 5 whole points when the new food for thought plan was introduced centred around gourmet healthy food paid for completely by Stark Industries.
Peter’s stomach was rumbling, an enhanced metabolism and forgetting lunch seemed to go hand in hand. Ned offered him half of the peanut butter sandwich but that barely touched the sides and Peter refused to take more of his friend's food. Despite the fact he was an employee and was technically allowed to eat the canteen food Mr Harrington had told them to bring lunch and he didn't want to bring any more attention to himself.
“Could Penis not afford to bring lunch today?” mocked Flash emerging from seemingly nowhere. “I-” began Peter. “I do not take kindly to bullies.” came a voice from behind Flash. The snarky expression on Flash's face drained of colour as he recognised a voice from a tape shown many times in detention. “Good afternoon Peter, it's a pleasure to see you at the tower but shouldn't you be in school?” continued Steve, only mildly put out by the bullying teenager’s behaviour. Peter sheepishly waves at Steve “It's a school trip to see Stark tower Mr Rogers sir.” “Ah very good I must be off to training but I'll see you around.” turning to Flash with a stern face. “And I'll be keeping an eye on you.” Flash retreated as Steve strode out of the cafeteria offering his signature patriotic smile. Having just watched one of his students embarrass him in front of a national icon Mr Harrington marches over to Flash. “Mr Thompson you will come sit with me and you will not move until everyone has finished their food.” Flash has no choice but to sheepishly follow Mr Harrington back to his table.
In his moment of relief Peter’s spider senses hadn’t alerted him to the spy that had crept up behind him. “Peter.” With a face like a deer in headlights Peter knows exactly who's behind him. “Hi Miss Romanoff.” as he turns to face her. “What have we said about forgetting food?” Nat chastises as she leaves a tupperware on the table for Peter before leaving in the same direction as Steve. Peter watches on, unable to say thank you fast enough he’ll have to buy her some tea bags as a thank you.
An internship at Stark Industries was the most prestigious opportunity for students wanting to study anything from engineering to marketing. Those hired went onto successful careers backed by Stark Industries International Intern Programme. So much so most students at Midtown had their name down on the waitlist for the summer programme.
One of the younger interns Peter recognised as Neil had been assigned to collect the group and show them to the intern laboratories sending them up in groups on the express lift. By the time Peter and Ned ascended to the correct floor most of the group had shuffled their way into the laboratory leaving Peter hidden at the back.
A small group of interns led the teens through some simple experiments to allow them to experience what it's like being in a professional lab finishing with an all time favourite of elephant toothpaste.
Bruce Banner rarely got involved with tours but on hearing about Midtown School he was looking forward to meeting Peter’s classmates. He quickly walked through a quick presentation of what they did at the laboratories before opening up a Q and A session to the group. Expecting most questions to be about the Hulk, Bruce was pleasantly surprised when people began asking about his work.
Flash’s hand is raised into the air before he’s called upon he flashes an evil smirk in Peter’s direction. “How do you apply to become an intern?” Bruce, excited by the idea that more people wanted to become scientists, began to explain: “Well I believe the online form is available on the Stark Industries website so when you are 18…” “Ha, see I knew you were lying Parker you have to be 18.” disrupted Flash loudly over Bruce. Bruce always strives to remain calm in situations, “unless like Mr Parker here you are invited as part of our early talent internship.” All questions seemed to have been answered by that and nobody could think of any further questions to ask, perfectly well timed for the end of the tour.
Neil escorted the group back down to the reception where briefly acknowledged Peter having missed him previously.
“Mr Thompson we will be having words about your behaviour when we return.” scolded Mr Harrington as he marched towards the door followed by the rest of the students through the gates. “Mr Harrington!” Sally called out across the reception. “You need to return your passes.” “My apologies of course. Students line up and give me back your passes one at a time.” Mr Harrington called out to the students to regain their attention.
As Mr Harrington returns the passes neatly, Sally exchanges them for commemorative tote bags for each of the students. “Mr Harrington, I also have a request here that one of your students Peter Parker stays here as Mr Hogan sees no point in collecting a child that is already here.” Sally states as she checks the notes on her computer. “Unfortunately I can not authorise that without permission from a parent or guardian.” “I thought you might say that Mr Stark is on line two. He's on the contact form with the school when his aunt is at work.” Sally states in a nonchalant tone.
Internally, Mr Harrington was fangirling. He got to have a conversation with the TONY STARK it didn't matter that it was about a child he got to speak to Tony Stark.
Mr Harrington almost snatched the phone from Sally’s hand.
“Mr Harrington,” oh my he’d said his name “I would like Peter to stay here my head of security will ensure he's well looked after.” said Tony. “Of course, right away Mr Stark sir thank you so much again for letting us visit.” “Mr Parker is permitted to stay,” directed towards Sally before turning to the students. “Peter Parker, you are permitted to stay here for your internship.”
The entire group of students begins to murmur in a mix of admiration and jealousy. Peter briefly says goodbye to Ned before skulking away towards the security gates watching his class leave.
When the lift finally arrived at the Stark Suite Peter found Tony lounging on the sofa. “Hey kiddo, how was the tour?” enquires Tony. “It was really good Mr Stark. I think Mr Harrington may be your biggest fan.” chuckled Peter back as he slumped into the sofa. “How did you know I was on the field trip?” Peter questions. “I have my ways.” Tony answers trying to remain mysterious “well kid come on let's hop to it. ” Peter chuckles as he follows his mentor to the lab. It had been a great field trip day.
