Black Sketchbook Series VIII: Flora and Fauna
Probably the last of these acrylic pen pieces on black for a while as I am working on other things. Sort of coral/ocean inspired as usual.

Tainted
The landscape was bleak, to the point of being virtually barren, the only break in the terrain were the mountains, rising in the distance hazy and indistinct. Eyes burned if focused too sharply, the air tainted, almost sulphurous, making the draw of every breath vicious and tight, adding to our burden.
We had been walking for what seemed like hours, the effort of putting one foot in front of the other the only constant in a journey that seemed like it might never end. The ground underfoot felt brittle and insecure, little more than rocks and scree, making our uncertain progress yet more arduous and stressful. We were not dressed for long distance hiking, as our departure had been sudden and abrupt, little more than a desperate escape in truth.
I felt a body stumble next to me and thrust out my arm without thinking, my hand closing around a bony elbow. I wasn’t sure who it was, even if it were a man or a woman, as I had wound a scarf around my head to try and protect my face from the burn of the air, and of course, the unremitting cold. Whoever it was I had grabbed onto steadied themselves and mumbled a thanks in my direction. I kept moving, we all did, after all…what else could we do.
Black Sketchbook Series VII: Oceanic
Something I finished a few months ago, but just didn’t get round to photographing it. Have had a bit of a rest from drawing, time to get back to it. Acrylic markers on black paper. Unplanned, process was as always, organic.
Black Sketchbook Series VI
More exploration in my black sketchbook with my Ohuhu and Posca acrylic markers. This piece is inspired by Korean Bojagi stitched textile. The book I used as my main source is Bojagi: Design and Techniques in Korean Textile Art by Sara Cook Also, this illustration is drawn freehand. I generally don’t sketch out or plan beforehand. For this piece I just plotted the colours and shapes as I went, going for a more organic process.
Black Sketchbook Series VII
Another piece inspired by Korean Bojagi and referenced from 'Bojagi' by Sara Cook. I really enjoy this process. Drawn freehand, I plot the shapes and colours as I go.

Mini Comic: Heat Wave
So... the UK Heatwave this year was not for the faint of heart. At all. Pretty sure I died. More than once. Physically and Spiritually.

The Weekend
About a year ago I bought the Fuji Intax Mini Evo, and finally unboxed it this weekend. A digital/polaroid hybrid, itakes the standard polaroid style pictures using Fuji film, but, you can save the images, and print as many copies as you like, or as much film as you have. Plus, there are lots of effects and filters you can apply as you are taking the pictures. Even possible to upload to your phone using blue tooth.
It's a lot of fun. I bought because I have always liked producing analogue film pictures (I have a lot of Lomo cameras), and I thought it would also be useful for my daughter's illustration course. These pictures were taken this weekend on Bognor sea front and at Amberley Museums 1960s day.
Black Sketchbook Series V
Not my usual thing I know. I decided to try something out. This is a collection of poems about love written in my long hand. I don't thing many people write in long hand these days. I feel a bit like a relic.

Black Sketchbook Series IV
More in this curent series of experiments in my black book, following no theme whatsoever, just what takes my fancy. Ohuhu acrylic makers.
Black Sketchbook Series III
More experiments with the Ohuhu acrylic markers in my black sketchbook. One of things I do like about these markers are that they are dual tipped. Fine at one end (ink comes through a pointed plastic nib) and they other end is a big felt marker. Nice to use.
Black Sketchbook Series I + II
A few months ago I bought pack of Ohuhu acrylic makers and a black sketchbook and have been working in that for a while, trying different things and experimenting. I have done quire a few different illustrations featuring different themes and ideas.
Sunset Over the Jianghu
So, what is the Jianghu? It's a Chinese word, and literally translated means 'rivers and lakes'. But, within the genre of Wuxia, it refers to the enviroment and tales of the martial world within a mythological/historical setting. I am a huge fan of Wuxia themed shows and books and is something I share with my daughter. But more on that another day. As for this piece, its inspired by the landscape of China, a truly beautiful country. Drawn out and coloured using Ohuhu alchohol markers and Caran D'ache Prismacolour Aquarelle pencils, in an A5 Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook.
Mixed Media Art
This was a piece I started last year and finished recently. It was part of a series in my A5 sketchbook. This piece originally included an ink illustration of an eye as part of the arch. It didn't work well with the rest of the piece, and in the end I decided it had to go, so I cut up the whole thing and turned into a collage. The drawing of the eye I have saved and will use elswhere. Really hard to get a decent photograph of this. Edited and discarded many times. Posca pens and fineliners in an A5 Seawhite of Brighton

Autumnal
All four illustatrations were drawn out in an A6 Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook, using Ohuhu alchohol markers and fineliners. These markers are a bit of a departure for me from my usual medium, and it's been a lot of fun learning how to use them and blend with them. The leaves motif is something I have included in my art quite a lot over the years, and tend to return to it. These are part of an ongoing theme and I will explore it further for a while I think. The images are darker than I had hoped for. As I live in England, its virtually raining non stop the light is always pretty terrible. I have edited for brightness and contrast a little, but not too much as I don't want to lose the depth of colour. The result is by no means perfect, but will have to do.
I recently purchased a massive box of Ohuhu alcohol markers as a gift to myself and the first time using alcohol markers in years. I think the last time I used alchohol markers were Prismacolor many years ago (which I still have somwhere). I also decided to loosen up a bit (really), and also try a change of colour palette. This was an experiment, it wasn’t meant to look like fronds initially, just how it ended up. Drawn in an A6 Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook.
