It's so important to me that everyone who meets Ilya feels safe around him. Shane at age 19 trusting him with his body and his sexuality and his reputation therefore his whole career. Svetlana who left home and could've gone anywhere but chose to move to Boston because guess who also lives there. Every person he's ever hooked up with because that's 100+ of people trusting him and saying yes. Yuna and David who spent less than an hour around him (Ilyushka not Rozanov) and accepted him as Shane's boyfriend even though they've spent the last decade hating him on Shane's behalf. Jackie trusting him with her kids after only meeting him once. Harris's family inviting him over so many times. His neighbors' kids making it a habit to wish him good luck before games. Troy coming out to him when it's his first time saying it out loud. Luca asking him for advice because he's finding it hard to "meet people". Coach Wiebe coming out to him and telling him about the guy he was in love with.

He's the safe space he needed growing up. He's the comfort person he wished for when he felt like he had no one. He's the familiar warm presence who has so much love to give to make up for all the love that was taken away from him.

Genuinely people are being purposely obtuse because what do you mean the gay autistic asian character doesn't experience trauma? She accidentally made the world's most interesting character and decided not to explore it or be curious about it whatsoever and then got angry and backhanded at people who even thought about thinking about that for a moment and the worst part is that there's people who are saying our response is dramatic and in bad faith like they aren't just passing over all of this because they don't care!

Actually I'm not done I think in a more carefully constructed and better written book ilya would never have left boston because what do you mean he left the team that drafted him and that he rebuilt and led to a Stanley cup? It's just so contrived and made in a lab to make ilya the perfect tortured main character and when shane doesn't know how to fix things for him because they've never been in this situation before he gets the blame for it.

Also what do you mean hayden outs them after ten years and it just gets smoothed over and forgiven immediately? You cannot tell me that shane would not be more angry about that and rightfully so! If these characters were actually fleshed out and better understood then hayden's carelessness would actually be a bigger part of the story and he would have to take accountability and make amends in a narratively satisfying way.

In my ideal world the long game would be about the fallout of how they're outed and how they build a life and team together instead of isolated ilya and misunderstood shane we got. They both deserved better! And this would've actually been more like a romance book since people are saying that things can't be gone better into because of the genre!

Heated Rivalry headcanons but make it actually about hockey

Hayden is actually a good player. Obviously not on Shane or Ilya's level but I like to think he's a top scorer on the team. He's on Shane's line! He has an A on his jersey! There's no way he's not a good player. This just makes it funnier to me that Ilya keeps calling him Montreal's 15th best player.

Ilya billeted with Cliff when he was a rookie. Obviously I know Shane lived by himself but this just makes sense. I think it would've been good for him since he was in a new country and didn't speak the language well at first. I love that they've made Cliff older than Ilya in the show. I just love the idea of Ilya having a good and close relationship with his teammates in Boston.

Shane lasts longer on the ice. I think with their different playing styles this just makes sense. Ilya is checking people and slamming them into the boards. He would get worn out quicker. Also I love the idea that everything's different when they're on the ice vs off the ice. Shane gets to be "bad" with Ilya and Ilya gets to be soft with Shane.

and instead?? shane just looks?? increasingly frustrated???

like they're still DOING all of the things OBVIOUSLY, but at a certain point, shane is getting annoyed at how deep he's having to dive into kink websites and a little judgmental about what ilya was willing to try out with strangers, jesus CHRIST
