It's been a while but say hello to the new gang in town - the purple squad (purple squad currently has four baby purple apple snail members)

Say hello to the whole tank! Sorry for the hiatus - we've had some new editions to the tank while I've not been blogging! Here you can see the two new guppies, the new octopus ornament with hidey-hole, some of the new purple snails AND *drum roll* the very very new baby snails! (the tiny white dots on the tank)

Hello - currently my snails live with two guppies BUT snails are perfectly happy living without fish. Algae goes not need fish to grow and my snails eat algea pellets which you can buy from pet shops - when the snails get bigger it's unlikely enough algae would grow in the tank to feed them! There are even some fish you cannot keep with snails - such as loaches and puffers - since they'll eat them.

Hi! I clean it with a siphon, which you can get from eBay pretty cheap. You'll also need a bucket - you just siphon the water into the bucket and run the siphon along the bottom of the tank to pick up any mess in the water. Then I use tetra aquasafe added to tap water to refill the tank. I do this about once a week and change about 25% of the water, if you change too much water you'll get problems with the tank water (such as bacterial bloom which is a white tinge to the water that you can see in some of the photos on here - I learnt that that was caused by changing too much of the water). I also have a cheap tank filter from eBay which uses a sponge filter to filter out the water which I have running all the time. When I first got them I didn't have a filter and just changed the water often and used oxygenating tablets, but it's much easier to get a filter - and cheaper in the long run than buying oxygen tablets (and I'm assuming it's better for the snails too!)Changing the water for snails is actually exactly the same as for fish, so if you look up how to care for fishwater that'll be the same - they're just a little more hardy if you mess up the water change - you can tell if something's wrong with the water if the snails move above the waterline (except to lay eggs) or if they're always stuck up the top of the tank with their siphons out.You can get lots of info on apple snail care here: www.applesnail.net this website is great and is what I used when I first got them. there are around 10 snailie eggs on the tank coverplate. I hear the slither slither of tiny snail feet!

sometimes you are having sex and then you crawl onto another snail and then you fall off and keep crawling along.

So these two have christened their new tank by mating literally all day. A couple of these photos are from the one time they were not stuck to each other - you can see the blue one's apparatus in two of the bottom photos.

Behold! The new tank for these little beasties!

I took the snails out of the tank to clean it - when I put this little guy back in he seemed to think he could become upright by the power of his tentacles alone.

Just got a new camera - this is the first attempt at photographing the snailies with it!
