for those interested in relatively accurate travel distances and how long it would take in Game of Thrones, here is a list so that your writing can be as accurate as possible ! I have chosen the main cities to focus on, and a few smaller places that I know are of interest. the rest of the headcanon is set up to help like this:        Sandor Clegane travelled from King’s Landing to Winterfell, which is roughly 1,460 miles. If he is on horse and traveling at 7 mph and traveling for 8 hours a day, it would take him 26 DAYS to get from King’s Landing to Winterfell. ( i literally did this math because the sources provided no mileage that I saw from KL to WF and fml I hate math )

all calculations in this headcanon are rough calculations, and are based off measurements by the sources above, simply compiled into one comprehensive source for writers. This list will be based on the ASSUMPTION that your character is traveling at 7 mph on horse, for 8 hours a day !! of all the brothers, he’s the least likely to support incestuous matches…

maybe he understands the tradition BACK WHEN THEY STILL HAD DRAGONS… but personally? he’d def push for alliances beyond the family, just like his father

I feel like he’s too dornish-influenced, too pragmatic and honestly too forward-thinking to cling to it if it isn’t necessary

baelor’s parenting style would be wildly different from maekar’s

he’d be the quiet & steady kind of father, the one who lets his children grow into themselves, gives them freedom within clear boundaries, and watches from a distance to make sure nothing truly harms them

not big on public affection or grand gestures, but every decision he makes has them in mind. the love is constant, just not loud

that being said… if valarr targaryen had taken his place in the trial of seven and died for it???? the realm would’ve been nuked lol….. jk 👀

maybe he wouldn’t literally burn everything down … but smth in him would go cold. still dutiful, still composed, still the perfect prince… just sharper. harder. less merciful. grief would calcify into policy

he forgave maekar targaryen for the blow that killed him bc he understood duty and tragic accidents. but forgiveness would end the second someone deliberately harmed his son. that’s the red line

cross it, and even baelor the just becomes smth else

Valarr is his pride and Matarys his joy ❤️‍🩹

he def still has a knee injury from the rebellion that never healed properly. it aches in the cold, stiffens after long rides, and sometimes forces a subtle limp when he thinks no one’s looking

i absolutely see Baelor Breakspear as religious

not in a performative way tho, not in the dramatic, zealot sense

I feel like the faith of the seven gives him structure. order. smth larger than politics and bloodlines. for a man who carries the realm on his shoulders, the idea that there is a higher judgment, a greater design? that would comfort him deeply

he’d attend sermons and actually listen. not just stand there for appearances. he’d find something reassuring in the rhythm of it — the father’s justice, the mother’s mercy, the warrior’s strength. he’d take pieces of each into how he rules

and yes, Maekar would absolutely roll his eyes. teased him for it when they were boys. probably still does as grown men. makes some dry comment about septons and soft hearts

baelor would just give him that mildly disappointed look

but here’s where it gets interesting : he’s still a targaryen.

and i don’t think that curiosity about old valyria ever fully leaves any of them

he wouldn’t worship the old valyrian gods openly or reject the seven — he’s too politically aware for that.

but i can see him reading about them, or what they know of them

there is always ink on his thumb

from letters, from decrees, from margins filled with notes. he reads everything himself. signs everything himself

a warrior-prince, yes, but first and foremost a man of thought and duty, the perfect hand of the king

his temper exists — it’s just terrifyingly controlled. he does not shout. he does not slam fists. his anger comes in the form of stillness. a pause. a measured look. when he is disappointed, it lands heavier than any outburst ever could.

he keeps dornish customs closer to his heart than he openly admits

not in ways that would alienate the realm (he’s too politically intelligent for that) but in private habits, in the way he listens to women at council, in how he values diplomacy over spectacle

he hates unnecessary cruelty more than open rebellion

rebellion can be negotiated with & cruelty cannot

the fastest way to lose his favor is to abuse power (*cough, cough* aerion)

he absolutely is the type of man to work through pain

knee aches ?? he rides anyway. head pounding??? he attends court anyway…. he would rather suffer quietly than let anyone think the realm’s stability rests on a fragile body

he doesn’t romanticize knighthood

I feel like he believes in honor, yes, but he has seen too many “honorable” men start wars over pride. his version of honor is restraint…. idk if that makes sense

if he ever laughed freely, it would only be with his children. court gets the composed prince, his sons get the rare, warm version of him that almost no one else sees

gods help anyone who mistakes his gentleness for weakness

baelor is merciful by choice, not by incapacity. he knows exactly how much force he is capable of — he simply prefers not to use it

oh he would 100% remarry if he had lived … not out of desperation, but out of responsibility

for a man like Baelor, the crown always comes before personal preference

yes, he already has two heirs. yes, that should be enough….

but this is the targaryen dynasty — history is basically a graveyard of “it should have been fine

after everything the realm has survived, the court would absolutely push for more security

spares for the spares. and baelor, ever pragmatic, would understand

there’s also the optics….

a young, widowed king staying celibate too long invites whispers. factions start speculating. alliances stall. a remarriage stabilizes everything: strength, continuity, renewal. he knows the game, and he’d play it well.

but it wouldn’t be only strategy.

his type? definitely not loud or power-hungry. he’d want composure, a woman who understands court, who can hold herself with quiet grace, who knows how to control herself under scrutiny

but privately? i really think he’d be drawn to someone softer around the edges : playful, but not foolish. proper in public, warm in private.

someone who can tease him just enough to ease that permanent crease between his brows.

and yes, awkwardness would charm him. small clumsy moments…. a flustered laugh…. a recovery that isn’t perfectly polished….

baelor lives surrounded by calculated perfection, something genuine and unguarded would feel rare to him

intelligence tho ???? completely non-negotiable

he is absolutely attracted to a sharp mind. he’d want someone who reads, who listens, who has opinions — even if she voices them carefully

a woman who can follow council matters, who asks “why” instead of just nodding. he doesn’t want a decorative queen; hed secretly wants a partner who understands the burden of the throne

and i think the longer he ruled, the more he’d realize he doesn’t just want a politically suitable wife … he wants someone who steadies him

i can see him being unexpectedly gentle

he wouldn’t be overly sentimental, but he would be intentional

and i love the idea that she’d be one of the few people who can make him laugh — not the polite court chuckle but a real one

maybe because shes a little awkward sometimes, or because she says something clever without realizing how clever it is

if she ever disagreed with him, respectfully but firmly? that would draw him in even more. he doesn’t want blind devotion. he wants partnership.

almost without meaning to, he’d begin to rely on her opinion before making certain decisions. not bc he must but bc he trusts her mind

favorite brother is obviously Maekar lolz

I mean they went to war together, they bled together — that kind of bond doesn’t really fade. even when they clash (and they do) there’s a that deep understanding there. they don’t need to explain themselves to each other

BUT he, ofc, gets along well with all his brothers !! but the closeness is… distributed differently

like, maekar is definitely closer to Rhaegel, more protective, more instinctive

meanwhile baelor naturally gravitates toward Aerys

he is absolutely a bookworm at heart, so aerys talking endlessly about smth? not annoying nor boring. baelor would listen maybe even ask questions.

sometimes they’d talk for hours, sometimes they’d just sit together in silence, reading side by side

aerys would feel seen by that, i think. baelor never dismisses him, never rushes him, never treats his interests like frivolous nonsense. that alone would make aerys latch onto him

with Rhaegel, i’ve always imagined baelor slipping into something almost like a second-father role. not because he has to but bc it’s instinctive. rhaegel is fragile in ways the court doesn’t forgive

like I said, maekar is def closer to rhaegel in a more openly protective, almost fierce way. but baelor’s care is quieter

he’d redirect conversations when courtiers start staring. gently remove him from situations before they spiral

and i love the contrast in how their mother sees them. Mariah would be fiercely protective of baelor because of what he endures at court : the whispers about his dornish looks, the subtle exclusions

but rhaegel? he’s her constant worry. the one she checks on twice. the one she watches during feasts to make sure he’s eating, to make sure no one is mocking him under their breath

so baelor may be her pride, but rhaegel is the ache in her chest

the difference is that she knows baelor will survive. he’s been mature since he was a boy. too mature, maybe. he learned early how to stand straight under scrutiny, how to respond with grace instead of anger. she trusts that as an adult, he can take care of himself

rhaegel, tho — he needs watching. he needs gentleness and baelor understands that without resentment, he doesn’t compete for attention. if anything, he helps carry that worry

i think baelor would always make sure rhaegel felt respected, not pitied

he’d speak to him normally… ask his opinion. defend him without making it obvious he’s defending him….

but baelor, being baelor, would never rank his brothers out loud. he loves them all ( but maekar is his fave — )

also very close with his father

daeron relies on baelor more than he lets anyone see. not just for competence but for assurance and steadiness

baelor, like his father, is a diplomat at heart.

he tempers heated lords, smooths tensions, carries messages that require both diplomacy and quiet authority. and daeron knows that when baelor stands beside him, the realm sees continuity

but baelor also seeks his father’s approval….. even as a grown man, even as hand, even as heir. when a council session ends, i imagine he lingers a moment longer than necessary. waits for that brief acknowledgment. that subtle “well done.” he doesn’t need praise but it matters that it comes from daeron

and i think daeron sees in baelor not just his heir, but his vindication. the peace with dorne. the diplomacy over conquest. baelor embodies that future

if anyone ever questioned daeron’s choices publicly, baelor would defend him without hesitation. and if anyone questioned baelor’s capability? daeron would shut it down just as quickly

okay LISTEN — walk with me on this

i don’t think he and Jena Dondarrion were a love match. obviously it was political. but i also don’t fully buy that they grew into some grand, sweeping love story either…. comfortable? yes. respectful? prob. deeply, passionately in love? …i’m not entirely convinced

and i say that with affection bc i love a lot of the romantic takes on them!!!

but here’s the thing : jena is from the marcher lords. dorne and the marches have history and baelor is visibly dornish. i can absolutely see little backhanded remarks slipping out sometimes. not cruel, not vicious but sharp in that casual, familial way. the kind of “oh, it’s just a joke” comments yk??

and baelor? he wouldn’t call it out publicly. he’s too composed but i do think he’d bring it up in private, very calmly and i can see her brushing it off and laughing. saying it’s just a running joke in her family, that it doesn’t mean anything

and maybe it doesn’t mean anything to her.

but it would mean smth to him :/

he still cares for her ofc, still fulfills his duties, still respects her as the mother of his children and wide but there would be a small distance there, like a subtle awareness that a part of him (the part shaped by dorne, by his mother) isn’t fully understood in that marriage if that makes sense

i can see him being a little jealous of Dyanna and Maekar marriage as well

bc whatever maekar and dyanna have feels more aligned. less politically strained. dyanna being dornish herself? there’s no cultural friction there, no subtle jabs, no explaining yourself ect ect

baelor would never admit that envy. not even to himself fully, but he’d notice it.

and that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love jena. he does!!

it’s just that in my head, it was always a marriage that worked… more than it burned

When Maekar was born and Myriah introduced him to Rhaegal, saying, “look, this is your baby brother! You’re a big brother now, like Baelor and Aerys,” Rhaegal was happy yet confused, and asked if he could, “pet,” the baby.

He came out with no hair, and was completely bald until he was a little over two.

He certainly wasn’t an easy baby to handle. He was fussy, pulled on hair and jewelry, and often bit his mother and his wet nurses while nursing.

He was a very jealous and clingy baby. He demanded to be held at all times, would throw a fit whenever his parents/brothers would pay attention to someone that wasn’t him, and he had a meltdown when Aerys told him that Myriah was his mother too, and not just Maekar’s. (Then he made it worse by adding that Baelor was his big brother too, and that meltdown was nuclear.)

Loved rough housing with Baelor. Baelor would hold him by his ankle like a fresh caught fish and swing him around, he’d pick him up and throw him across the room into a pile of pillows, and a bunch of other shit that scared their mother half to death, and the entire time little Maekar would shrieking with laughter.
