Excerpt: Ruby knocked on the door of Snow and David’s apartment, Granny standing behind her, holding a freshly made casserole. They could hear little Neal screaming inside, but no one was moving around behind the door, no one was approaching to answer it. Ruby couldn’t even smell them. After a few moments, and knocking once or twice again, Ruby dug around in her purse for the extra key Emma had given her back when she lived at the apartment herself.

She unlocked the door and sniffed the air. Snow and David’s scents lingered over the apartment, but they clearly were not there. Neal’s screams got louder and Granny set her casserole dish on the counter and rushed to go find him. The window above Neal’s cradle was wide open and the curtains were billowing in the early morning breeze.

Eleanor Lovett sighed, watching the waves crash into each other. The world was quiet here, by the sea. The sand was soft, and the very air bore the salty tang of the ocean, rather than the sickly sweet scent of bodies burning. She closed her eyes and took in the refreshing air. It had been so long since she had been by the sea, The last time had been with her great aunt Nettie, when she was still young. Nellie supposed she was still young. Young enough to have a wee babe, anyway, she thought mournfully, placing a calloused hand on her ever-so-slightly swollen tummy.

Summary: Eleven years ago, Minerva was capture by the Death Eaters. Ever since then, her and Poppy’s relationship hasn’t been the same.

Excerpt: Minerva felt as if she was underwater. Not exactly drowning, but distant from the world, unable to reach back into it. Her very bones seemed to ache from the weight of the water in her head and it was all she could do to sleep, to ignore her darkened reality.
