The Epic Journey: The Saga of Erik Paulson and his Bond with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Under the pale Minnesota sky in June 1966, Erik Paulson was born—not yet realizing that before long, he would ignite a revolution in martial arts. As a boy of eight, he stepped onto the judo mat, seeking discipline and mastery. One fateful day, a bully thwarted his throw by grabbing his hair. That moment redirected his path: he concluded that to defend himself, mastery of striking was essential—and the journey into a grand tapestry of martial arts had begun.

Erik’s path led him to California, where he trained under Dan Inosanto—the world-renowned instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Silat, and Kali—and expanded his repertoire across striking arts: Taekwondo, Boxing, Karate, Muay Thai, Savate, and more.

But in the late 1980s, Paulson rediscovered grappling under the original Grandmasters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Rorion, Royce, and Rickson Gracie in their Torrance garage. There, he laid the foundation of his ground game, which would soon transform into something entirely new.

At Inosanto’s academy again, fate introduced him to Yorinaga Nakamura, who initiated him into shoot wrestling—a hybrid of striking, takedowns, and submissions. Fascinated, Paulson absorbed its depth and nuance. He completed his metamorphosis into a multidisciplinary warrior by studying catch wrestling under the legendary Billy Robinson.

1993 dawned with destiny calling. Through Nakamura, Paulson connected with Satoru Sayama and entered Japan’s Shooto circuit. In his professional debut, he submitted Kazuhiro Kusayanagi and became the first American ever to win the World Light-Heavyweight Shooto Championship. Thus, he etched his name into MMA history.

Paulson defended his honor as champion for years. His professional record stands at 17 bouts, with 11 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws. Of those victories, eight came by submission—a testament to his mastery of grappling.

Amid his rise, he once sought a place in the historic first UFC. The Gracies, protective of Royce’s legend, declined—but invited him instead to corner Royce in that fateful event.

By the mid-1990s, Paulson had begun to shift from gladiator to mentor. In 1995, he competed in the U.S. “World Combat Championships,” a battle-formatted event pitting strikers versus grapplers. Labeled a striker, he couldn’t use submissions freely—and yet, he adapted and proved his versatility.

But perhaps his greatest legacy is the forging of Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW)—an ingenious system blending judo, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, shoot wrestling, Sambo, catch-as-catch-can, and dynamic leg locks with striking arts. Paulson soon founded the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, and developed STX Kickboxing, a hybrid striking system of unparalleled precision.

From his school emerged titans: Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Brock Lesnar, Sean Sherk, Cub Swanson, Renato Sobral, James Wilks, and others—an entire lineage of champions shaped by his vision and mentorship.

Though recognition from institutions has at times overlooked his depth of knowledge, Paulson’s influence remains undeniable. Titles or bureaucracy cannot diminish a legacy written in sweat, innovation, and teaching. He is revered by students and professionals alike, with many modern champions praising him as one of the sport’s true pioneers.

Today, Paulson stands not only as a pioneer but as a guardian of blended martial arts—a living embodiment of the warrior-scholar tradition. His story reads like myth: from judo’s innocence through striking’s awakening, grappling’s revelation, championship glory, and the creation of a fighting art all his own.
