The first light trickled through grime-caked glass, painting the cramped quarter's innards a spectral hue. Nikaido rose with the sun, stretched lingering sleep away, and went about her typical morning routine. A new day, the same as always. A new page within a new chapter, moving further and further away from the cacophonous memory of another world until it was reduced to a distant rustling. Bottling emotions, putting a cork in thoughts and feelings, was her specialty. One, who wanted to hear it anyway? And two, despite it all, she was happy now. Mostly. She had her home, her restaurant, her comrades. Most importantly, she had Kaiman. Again. Still. But regardless of her gratitude, the rustling of the past would still occasionally come knocking.Β
Clean and dressed, Nikaido made her way downstairs. She chuckled to herself at the dark shape just outside the Hungry Bug's window, looming where it sat. It was almost expected at this point, it seemed, for her friend to arrive earlier and earlier.Β
β Good morning, Kaiman! β She greeted immediately upon stepping outside, albeit his expression indicated anything but good. The ascending daylight, shifting through silver-toned smog, cast Kaiman in a bizarre light. A hazy glow that made Nikaido think of a halo, a nimbus effect causing him to appear insubstantial, as if she were being visited by a spirit instead. The light had another unsettling consequence. The way it'd glint off Kaiman's eyes, as if suffering some sense of delirium. After a moment of silence, she gently asked, β Can you even stay awake long enough for me to make the first batch of gyoza? β
Carefully, her hands found their way beneath his arm, attempting to help him stand. She didn't press for answers, never having been one to force him to speak, even after all they'd been through together. She let him come to her, always, on his own terms, when he was ready. She'd do so now, and when Kaiman finally felt the need to get whatever nasty ailment that was needling away at him out of his system, she'd listen without judgment. The look he wore indicated the past may knock again soon, like the voice of a new self or maybe just another apparition. Not real, not entirely, but there all the same. Maybe it was time to open that door. Together. Not because they were certain of who existed on the other side. They should open it together simply because it was a door, and they've known there was a door, and that's what doors are for. Opening and closing. Walking through. Starting over. Starting again.
β At this point, maybe I should just give you your own key, yeah? β Nikaido asked through a purposefully lighthearted laugh, prompting them to enter the restaurant together. Neon hummed and fizzled to life after flicking the switch of the open sign, and then she went behind the counter, trying to focus on food prep for the first batch of customers. β It'd be easier on you in the morningβ¦ Rather you rest in here instead of straining your backside out there. 'Sides, you know the types around this part of town. β
